Alrighty guy and girls all my old images have been deleted (by my little bro) so it's time to start from scratch.
I'll post old (as old as I have) to new here, so you may have seen some of this stuff already:
December 06:
First up the Venom Draw off entry:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Pin-ups/hiyaparkerUPDATED.jpg
And last an incredibly large piece (14x17) I did for a friend after I found out I would be moving away:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Pin-ups/spideyposter-1.jpg
I was kinda on a Spidey stint late last year huh? :p
Ah well, more to come!

Moving on to January 07,
I did about 4 or 5 different revisions of this piece with the help of many PJ members, this being the final result:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Pin-ups/DFsplashpage3.0complete.jpg
For those who don't know ^that^ is part of my created comic the Dark Force. Characters left to right, the evil Set-Fate and the Heroic Dark Force members Sharp Shot, the Commander, Swordsman and Slash.
Feburary 07:
The supernatural Draw off entry,
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Pin-ups/ghostriderandspawn.jpg
An another very large piece I did (14x22) with even more of my created characters:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Pin-ups/DarkHeartSet-Fatepinupspread.jpg
The left: the main bad guy Set-Fate, also pictured up top. The right: The main good guy, Dark Heart.

Batman's head is too large in the last one.
But other than that, it's great.

i think an easier was to do studies would be to actually study faces and anatomy. see how real faces look, shadow, contort, etc. and now real muscles look then uses your own style (or someone else's) and exaggerate as you see fit. but starting from the unreal will make it more difficult if you want to progress as an artist and do more than fan art.
but you clearly have the potential to grow at the craft. espically considering your age.

Continuing in February 07:
I redid the right half of the last image I posted, I thought it turned out pretty good.

Here's a scraped piece of Wolvie and Spider-Woman:

I agree with spidey needing a neck, also hes a bit too bulky for my tastes. Then again I grew up during the clone saga and got used to bagleys and larsens spideys. But I really like that figure on the page with the spidey 2099 head on it.

I agree with literacy, your spidey is really bulky. spidey on roids, more like it. if you wanna draw a buffed up spidey that also looks functional, id say look at mcfarlanes stuff. ignore how anatomically incorrect he makes spideys gyrations, look at how built he makes spidey while retaining his athleticism.
aside from that, also try on making your poses more dynamic. that black spidey swinging pose is BORING.

Spidey looks too beefy in these but that's alright.
They're just sketches, besides, it proves as a good way to practice anatomy.
Now all you gotta do for the character is to scale it down a bit.

I would suggest drawing from life if you are really looking for feedback. This looks perfectly fine for a 15 year old, but it isn't spectacular for that age either. It's clear you are drawing with comics as your major reference point...which is fine when you are just getting started. Now that you have started, its time to move on and force yourself to grow.

It's all been said. You need to steer away from copying, mimmicking or aping other artist's styles and get started on developing your own. Right now you don't have a firm grasp of anatomy or proportions. Forget about Jim Lee; we already have a Jim Lee. What we need is a Phillip.
Bruce Lee
03-15-2007, 03:19 AM
These are pretty cool, dude. I can tell you're working pretty hard, trying to figure out anatomy and foreshortening and so forth. The sketchblog is a good way to practise these things, and I hope you'll continue working on getting down the basics. I have one bone to pick with you about your Spidey though:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h273/sadmanZERO/sadman2000s%20art/classicspiderman.jpg
Your "classic Spidey" is far too stocky, Sadman. He looks to be built like Venom, not Spidey! Even back in the days of John Romita Sr, when the Webhead was a bit beefier than he's drawn today, Spidey was NEVER depicted as being quite this bulky. I think you would be doing well to tone down his build a lot more.
The thighs are very lumpy looking in your drawing. While it's important to show his musculature, it's important to get the shapes right and not to overdo things. I recommend seeking out some anatomy reference to help you on the legs. Don't worry about making him look too "ripped" in build. For now, I recommend concentrating on proportion and overall leg shape.
At this POV, we should see much more of Spidey's neck. It sort of looks like he doesn't have one here.
I know for a fact the "classic" Spidey never had those large McFarlane eyes! Hehe. This is supposed to be the "classic" version, right? The pattern of the costume's webbing is off-model. The web pattern you've given his outfit is not the look of the Spider-Man outfit I'm familiar with, "classic" or otherwise. I know these are just sketches, but in the spirit of trying to be helpful, I have worked up some quick body sketches and costume sketches for you below. I hope they will prove useful to you. Proportion isn't an easy thing. I typically like a taller and lankier Spidey than you've drawn, but I stayed with the height you'd chosen and tried to suggest how you might slim him down in proportion:
http://www.lostonwallace.com/spideybody.jpg
In regards to the costume, Here's a basic step by step of how to approach the webbing. The idea of the webbing on the torso part of the costume is that the the vertical weblines radiate outward from the neck, mimmicking how a spiderweb fans outward (Imagine spidey's head as being the center of the costume's overall web). You should also use the vertical lines to help define the anatomy of his torso to some extent, but that's the basic idea.
Once you have the vertical weblines figured out, then you move on to the horizontal lines. I typically lay down lines that work to define the figure and also serve as guidelines or "cross beams" in the webbing. Finally, I go back in and define the "cross beams" of the webs with the curved shapes:
http://www.lostonwallace.com/spideycostume.jpg
Hope these are useful! Keep working hard!
Take care,
Loston

In my latest piece, (Improvement DO entry) my crit was to work on poses. So work on poses I did! I've got an Idea for a new piece featuring one of my characters, but I'm undecided on which one to choose so:

Which do you prefer, 1 or 2?
Thanks!

Alright, I been thinking it about high time to start a new section of my blog this one being the baddies from me and my little bro's Comic the Dark Force. For comparitive value (or just a bit of nostalgia for me) I'll show what they looked like the first time these character were ever drawn.
Steel Fist:
His origins from the mind of my little brother in '02
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Concepts/Steel-Fistorigins.jpg
- Note the exhaust pipe sticking out of his head:p
to the current design from my mind:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Head%20Shots/Steel-Fist.jpg
And Night Claw a character that my little bro also made a few years ago in '03
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Concepts/Night-Claworigins.jpg
I've ditched the rocket board by the way.
Now the current:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Head%20Shots/Night-Claw.jpg
Night Claw is probably the only character in full-body tights out of the entire line up of characters.
I'd love to know what you all think of the headshots!
Thanks guys,

Yeah man, sure.;) That's actually going to be my next step after I finish 1 or two more head shots. I'd just like to get a general feel for the character's designs that way I don't waste time doing a ton of full body concepts that I won't use, just like when we talked about this in the PM's a while back I'm just now designing alot of these characters for for the first time (including those two) so hopefully you understand why I'm drawing just their heads first.:)

Well I decided I'd give the ol' Arsenal a makeover. Back in the day he was called Weapon-Bot which imo was retarded and I changed the name when my little bro finally realised just how stupid the name "Weapon Bot" was.
Here's my little bro's very first drawing of the character I affectionatly dubed "MISSLE NIPPLES" :p
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Concepts/Arsenalorigins.jpg
Now Today's Arsenal is alot different and yet very much the same.

I dig the body shot, but the costume is a biiiiit flamboyant with that fuzzy cape/ hair thing going on. I like the anatomy stuff up top too. I want to see more of that. The heads could use some variance in shape and proportion to define them above and beyond the costumes. I think Jim lee said something when he was drawing Batman about making sure he drew Bruce underneath and put the cowl over for consistency. I've always tried to do that since then and it does help define the faces of your characters.
Hope that helps.

What he said. You've improved a ton, but I think this really jumps out as something to work on. Not just facial expressions either, but actual head shapes too. If every character was wearing the same mask, we should still be able to see the difference to an extent. Think about jaw lines and forehead size and nose shape - all that stuff.

But I do have a new piece of my created character Set-Fate the main villain of my comic The Dark Force, Set-Fate's mission is to rule the galaxy with an iron fist, and his mission comes closer to complete when he conquers yet another planet: Mars, the home of the galactic keepers of the peace The Dark Force.

Well alrighty Guy and girls I refreshed what links I can. If your not aware my little bro took control of my account last night, made some very rude comments and deleted my files in his photobucket account that we shared (I have my own account now). It's a shame I've lost most of my old work on computer and paper. If I'm lucky I may end finding some of it and I'll rescan it and post it in it's proper place.
As I said I'll be posting all my artwork here and nowhere else, so give me some feedback!:)
I'm working on a new coloring style, hopefully one that'll add some depth to my work.

I've enjoyed looking at all the cool heads you've drawn, but I think I like the work you've done on posts 99 and 100 the best. Thanks, Shawn. I really debated on that, I couldn't decide if I should or shouldn't use one of of my characters in the pic. I wanted to use Dark Heart, from post #100, but I also really felt Batman should be in that spot he's in now. In the end, as you can see, I decided against it, mainly due to compositional complications caused by having two guys in two big capes. It just seemed a bit too repetitive and would most likely end up hurting the piece in the long run.:)

Well .... I can understand that one ... that is for sure. I have had to go to a double page spread for my entry to get the comp to something I am happy with. Yours is a great piece though I agree with some of the comments posted in the penciling forum. CCCuts - Thanks man I'm really trying to hone my technique. :)
Spidey976 - I use sketch pad paper when drawing thumbnails, quick sketchs and the character headshots I do (I usually can three to four headshot per 8 x 11 page but scan them as I complete 'em). I do however use 9 x 12 or 11 x 14 bristol board on finished pieces like the Favorite Characters or Set-Fate pieces I did. I prefer to use 400 or 500 series strathmore bristol with a vellum finish. Hope that answers your question! ;)
Business has been pretty good this year, for the five short week I've been in school I've recieved about 8 to 10 commissions with the latest being from my Algebra II teacher who has commissioned me to draw 8 1/2 x 11 spidey pics for her young kids.
I've worked out a very, very small 1 x 2 inch thumbnail for the first one:

Yeah its looking more like venom because of his size.
You probably can get away with half his size.
I would say to draw the head bigger and it would get
rid of the size problem but you still have to elongate the

Hey Sadman
Well that is a nice looking Darkseid. Honestly m8 (lol) ... I really do think that given time you are going to be one of those guys that everyone brings their A game out during a drawoff just to find that they don't ge the votes ... ;). When I saw your piece for the fav character drawoff I upped my game ... and I still have fewer votes then you do ... do I mind? Nope!! I wish I had had your level of ability when I was your age ... Cool glad you like 'em, I'll be sure to post the finished pieces when they're done.

First I saw your batman, and I'm thinking "ok, guess I'll comment on studying anatomy, etc." THEN I saw your *other* stuff and I'm like "ok yea that batman is old - or it's not his". Your stuff looks pretty good - I think the poses could use some spice, but your designs are decent. Oh, and with the batman pic, my girlfriend saw what I'm assuming is your signature, and she wants to know if Batman won at tic-tac-toe. At first I thought it was also a game of TTT you'd won or lost, but then I took a closer look and realized it your name was in the center square, and the surrounding shapes were triangles. I must say that's quite unique. Anywho, great stuff, look forward to seeing more - later!

Nice work sad ... I have to say i love looking at your finishing technique on these. Just a quick question though m8 ... your last two are pretty thick ... are they suppose to be walking tanks???

HitNRun - That piece is indeed mine from way back in June of '06. I'm glad you like my sig too, I'm always trying to be unique in my work. :)
spidey976- I'd have to agree, they are a bit on the bulky side (particularly the top one) but I wanted that, especially on the Steel-Fist character which I felt wasn't big enough. Of course not all my character are "walking tanks" as you put it but a good few are. ;)
I'm planning on doing a Ghost-Rider pic sometime within the next week give or take a couple days, so I thought I'd post the thumb for it:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/sadman2000/Sketches/Ghost-Riderthumb.jpg

In general Sad this is some really solid work. I am curious as to what you are using for an anatomy reference??? Your anatomy is okay ... but gets a little hinky when you start turning your characters, twisting various body parts in relations to others. They just don't look like they are attached properly. I think I only notice because it is an area that I struggle with too ... ;). Hence my curiosity about your anatomy references.
Also, I would love to see more work in progress sketches from you. I think guys would be able to point out issues that are present in your work prior to your rendering them. However, I think you are kind of like me ... you like showing your best finished work ... not your WIP pieces.
Keep it up m8 .. your stuff is moving along.

I just went through your whole blog and, though you are improving vastly, you're only doing it on certain poses. I would suggest trying out more poses from different angles before you get comfortable drawing only two or three poses. Also, I think it's time that you started getting used to drawing female bodies.

Loston: Sadly yes, that is a forearm. I'm really trying to up my skills with the human figure so I figure I'd mess around a bit. ;)
notebookpress: Thanks man, I glad you like the Wolvie and Hellboy! And yeah I feel I've come a long way but I still have far to go. As far as action-packed pieces go, I'm working on it and you can hope to see some more energitic pieces from me in the future.
spidey976: Refrence? What the heck is that? :D But seriously I rarely use any reference, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I'm really stubborn about that. And about WIP stuff I don't do that either, I go straight from mind, to pencil, to paper hence the lack of sketches. So yeah, I really only do finished work, but I'm working on actually useing my sketchbook for stuff besides headshots and quick pin-ups. Thanks man!
fatmancomics: Thanks for looking, and I agree, everything you said is absolutely true so rest assured, I'm working on it.
So here are some sketches, I'm working on getting a little looser and more dynamic with these. Most of them are Star Wars (which I've never drawn more than once or twice and failed terribly) and I feel they're looking pretty good. I challenge anyone to name every character on the page, if you can do it you have my eternal respect. Here we go:

Nice add on here sad.
I have to say that some of these show a lot of promise in terms of foreshortening and dynamics. I am noticing that some of the figures have been stumped a bit with the torso being longer then the legs, and conventionally the torso is the same length as the legs ... so it gives some of your characters the look of being little people. Other then that since these are sketches ... I would say all you need to do is practice your 3/4 views a little bit.
Great progressions pieces dude.

Ooh, cool acrobat sketches, and nice batman stuff.
but since you asked for crits...in the past your figures have been stiff and kinda action figure like, which is lessening a lot now since you're starting to put some bend in the torsos. Only thing is that you still swivel the arms like they're action figure arms on a ball joint...well I guess arms kinda DO move on a ball joint, but the shoulders should be moving a bit too. When you reach up, your shoulders move with them, stretching the pecs and back muscles also (it's all attached). Any major movement of the arm is going to carry the shoulder a bit with it, and change the shape of the flesh.
I think if you studied and implemented this a bit more into your figures your poses would start looking a lot more natural/dynamic. It's a tiny thing, but it makes a big difference.

Those heads are awesome. But question: how come none of you guys' ever darken up your drawings after you scan (in Photoshop)? I've taken a lot of guys work into Pshop and done it myself, just to see what's really there. I realize it may be a time issue (personally, I spend more time cleaning up my drawings than drawing them), but even just hitting "auto levels" in Pshop works wonders. I think you're missing a lot of life and vibrancy potential in the work by not doing this. But that's my 2¢, take it for what it's worth.
I hope this is not out of line, but I just did what I was talking about with your last peice there (if this offends you, I apologize):
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/393/dfheadshotstwo.jpg
What I did was use auto levels, unsharp mask, then pushed the whites and blacks in levels again. Some detail does drop out, and if that's an issue, I understand. Again: no insult intended: you're a better artist than I am. This is just an issue I keep running up against at PJ.
