those sketches have alot of character which is nice. im not sure i like how tight they are though. dont be afraid to get loose. also they look like 12 year olds. post more.

Thanks NickGuy.
Yeah they are tight, now that I look at them. Guess I overworked them a tad too much, normally I spend maximum 2-3 minutes on a sketch, but I think I was watching TV when I was doing those so I must've gone over the time limit. :D
12 year olds? I thought they looked a little older...doesn't really matter anyways I have some problems with drawing certain age groups, need more practice.

Anyways here are some more stupid doodles.

So much for posting everyday...oh well.

Anyways here's a little crappy doodle I did, I know the proportions are way off, but I liked how the chest and shoulders turned out...

hahaha thanks NickGuy! lots of people like that style, that's actually the style i use for hand-drawn animations.
anyways here are some sketches of 2 characters for an animation i've been thinking of doing, however this animation would be much longer than anything i've accomplished before so i'm hesitant about it.

Anyways as I was waiting for my camera to unload its pictures into the computer, I decided to scan something from my very small sketchbook.

I'm in the process of writing the story that accompanies this last character. I hope I won't get bored half way through like I usually get and stop completely. If I do finish it, I'll proceed with drawing the comic book.

Heathen

Referenced the pose from an old roman painting depicting Diana, the goddess of the hunt. There's no clothes added because I thought if I added them I would ruin it, which is what usually happens. I figured I'll go back and add them once I feel confident I won't completely destroy it by adding clothes. The pole she's holding was from the original painting, I'm thinking of changing it into visible remnants of wind gusts as her hand looks like it's doing something rather magical.

Well I was completely bored waiting in the art room this morning, and I turned around and saw the life size human skeleton on the table, so I thought... why not draw a few bones while waiting?
Unfortunately due to years of abuse, the skeleton is missing a few bones...namely the right arm and part of the skull...so I was unable to draw those...

Ummmm so why not use referance for anatomy?
I tried what your doing before on just studying it and then seeing if I retain things by just drawing it.....but that method was not helpful compared to actually using anatomy referance right then and there. This way you can tell what you did wrong right away and you wont make a habit of messing it up. And over time it will retain in your head more because you will always go over areas to fix it correctly from the start. It also saves alot of time. Its something Loston (Bruce Lee) pointed out to me, and it just made alot of sense, and hell is working for me way better. Just some friendly advice :)

By the way I see enormous improvements already. Looking better by the post! Your perspective training has shown the most improvement, take a look in curvilenear perspective to really trap the readers eye. Check out Astro City images for guidance.
Keep it up!

Heathen
02-05-2007, 09:22 PM
Thank you JimLeeforGod for your advice.
You're right, using reference will be more helpful. I'm trying it at the moment, and it is a lot easier. Hopefully, my anatomy will get better faster....
I'll try that curvilinear perspective thing. I've heard of it, but don't really know what it is, other than that it is perspective.

soooooo.... i'm praticing anatomy... the results are getting more satisfying.............gradually.

Here's a drawing I did of one of my favorite anime characters. Only thing is that I decided to make it a more american comic book style as opposed to anime. She's barely recognizable, as the only features from anime that define the character are usually the hair and clothing. BTW if you're curious, this is Hitomi Kanzaki from Escaflowne.

two of my favorite anime characters done in a more american comic book style, i was more concerned with the running girl's pose as i have a hard time drawing people with more or less correct anatomy running. characters are hitomi and merle from escaflowne.

for whatever reason i find it easier to practice anatomy using existing characters. i'm hoping that this practice will lead to my own characters looking anatomically correct. obviously i need to practice my hands, they look grossly mutated. i have no talent for inking either.

Well I'm gonna tell you right now, you CAN draw. Just by looking at these photo-refed pics I can see that and so can anybody else. Have you by any chance seen any of alex ross's early work, before he started using photo reference? If not here's the scoop: It was nothing like what he creates now. And much like your refed stuff - looks nothing like the non-refed. In fact I someone showed me the pics I quoted and then one of your starwars pics I'd say these were drawn by two different people. Bottom line USE REFERENCE! It's not cheating and it's not wrong and no one will give ya crap about if you do. You clearly have potential, so keep working at it.

thanks sadman2000. for some reason i seem to have some kind of mental barrier saying to not use reference, i'm slowly chiping away at that barrier though. i'll make sure to use more ref from now on, starting with this:
