Its an original character I made for Void.
Its supposed to be more or less a throw away character.
The original design I thought looked too much like a Battle of the Planets charcter so...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/Spyderizzle/Bluejay.gif

I went with this version, but I think this one is a bit too serious for a Sudden Death Tournament (biweekly sequential battle tournament).

I like them both, it's true the first one is ressembles battle of the planet too much, but second one is pretty cool. It looks like he has no cape on on the from behind version of him though. Nice colors

As a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, I approve of this character :)

Spidey
05-08-2006, 03:39 PM
Karim, they're supposed to be design sheets. Thats why I left the cape see through in the second one.

And Ugga, thats the second tornto fan apporval Ive had, heh.

Does the Blu-jay really have "two toes"? The serious version has him wearing shoes no human foot could wear without surgical alterations.

krikkit13
05-09-2006, 12:29 PM
Fun stuff Spidey. I'm glad you merged the two versions - I was going to suggest that actually, since I liked the tone of the original, but the mask of "realistic" one.

And yeah, that mask is very Toronto Blue Jay-ish. In a good way.

Spidey
05-09-2006, 02:11 PM
Vatka, the toes are kinda extra pieces on the boots, thats why they're so big.
Thanks krikkit.

they both make a sequential of thier charcters fighting to the death. Whichever sequential gets the most votes becomes "cannon". The other person won so blu-jay is dead...at least on the art battle site.

My audition for the costume design thing at, CBR.com.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/Spyderizzle/CBR4-R1.jpg

Male: Paragon - Modeled after a real life hero if the military were involved. All red parts are toughened titanium alloy armor. His basic garb included canvas pants, light combat boots and a fine mesh shirt that help wisk away sweat. Belt is your basic military issue and comes with a couple of pouches for miscellaneous items.

Female: Ember - Design is based around a fire starter character. The whole outfit isn't leather, but rather a fire retardant material to stop her clothes from burning off. She also has glasses that help cancel out the brightness of her flames. Orange parts (gloves and knees) are especially fire retardant composite materials.

-----------
I always submit at the very last minute and have to rush my costume descriptions. Writing is def. not my strong suit.

The designs blend in pretty well with timm's, but Mignola contributed the design for freeze, and Kevin Nowlan did some design work for it too. Bruce Timm was still the head designer though.

I got inspired by the editor thread. I'm gonna try and do as many suggestions as I can in order.

I started with the regular ol' Spidey head, but as I worked my way around to Venom and Carnage I noticed I was taking more liberties with the characters. By the time I got to Green Goblin and Rhino they were pretty much redesigns and realized they didn't go too well with the original Spidey head, so I re did Spidey to fit my vision: Narrower eyes, sporadic webbing and a thin bone structure. I finished off with Doc Ock, but I wasn't feeling too inspired by then so he ended up looking pretty traditional.

Thats rockin, love the coloring but you could have gone a little lighter and added more contrast so all the line-art doesn't disappear.

I see what your saying Fig. I didn't want to make it too light to where it grays out. Also, I think she looks darker or lighter depending on the monitor.

The figure is a bit unnatural, especially the foot, but the colors are banging!

Spidey
09-09-2009, 02:45 PM
Thanks guys. I actually had originally drawn the foot pointing down, but it's a hard angle to draw. I redrew it pointing up and it didn't look too bad. Even though it's an unnatural position I liked it better than the original one I had. It's an easy fix though. I'll wait until the voting is over and upload the fixed version.

Like I said in the challenge thread, I'm not happy with it at all. It was more of an experiment I guess. I'm much better at the open lines and colors I think.

Just to pipe in: (now that I'm through downloading all your drawings)...
And I know it was a while ago (I just looked at your tread for the first time these last two days), but I thought your translation of Hell Boy into Spanish was pretty good, but I went to BabelFish, put in "hell boy" and got back: "muchacho del infierno". (Just to be a nit-picker)

BTW: You're a darn-good graphic designer (besides being a top-flight illustrator-needless to say). Your logos are really good.

Thanks yomark, I really appreciate that. And I speak Spanish so the Hellboy translation kind of came naturally to me.

Man, some of the stuff you've posted lately has been really sweet. The second shot at colors for the the 3 on 3 challenge is particularly awesome.

I'm also a big fan of the graphic elements in some of your pinups. It's not too common on PJ, and I've found that it's not to everyone's taste. I like it though, and I enjoy seeing other artists experiment with the medium a bit.

I like parts of the Trapjaw piece a lot. I used to be all about open lines, and I've been forcing myself to use some more blacks and hatching. It's kinda tough, but it can be pretty rewarding too. I think if you had darkened the area around his left armpit and shoulder to pop that reaching hand out, it would've helped a ton.

I don't think the legs are really working, but that's more a layout thing than the result of trying new styles. You've got that reaching hand which leads to this idea of him charging forward, but the legs sorta make it look like he's skidding to a stop.

Spidey
09-12-2009, 06:02 PM
I know what you mean about the graphics design elements not being too popular 'round 'ere. I still enjoy dabbling anyways.
I had the pose in my head and it looked okay. I have one of those crappy wooden mannequins that I referenced for the pose.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/Spyderizzle/2009-09-12-85536.jpg
The pose look okay on the mannequin, but I couldn't translate it effectively. I had drawn in his right leg and had a really hard time placing his left leg so I just went with something that was decent, but is screwed up the balance of the figure as a whole. So yeah, now it looks like he slowing from a run and about to gut somebody with the hook, heh.

I really want to get one of these.
http://image.misterart.com/grouppix/528x352/3000/g3538.jpg
The look like they have a better range of motion.

yomark
09-13-2009, 04:47 PM
I broke MY wooden mannequin trying to get it into poses as limber as the human body.

But what's this you say about graphic elements not being popular around here? My background is as a print graphic designer, and I'm begining to wonder if maybe that's why I keep butting heads around here, (and have so much trouble finding common ground)?

Spidey
09-13-2009, 05:55 PM
I just think people prefer actual backgrounds that's all. It's not that they necessarily have anything against designer elements.

Also that deadpool would have kicked ass if you finished it for pummel.

EDIT: Got an idea for ya for the Deadpool piece. The idea is pretty done. Badguys shoot, wall behind goodguy is shot up, goodguy aint harmed at all. Since Deadpool could easily survive the shots, you should have him shot up just like the wall. (ba-dum-ch!)
