I really like this! I use the overlapped metal bands (on his arms) on a regular basis - I love that look. My favorite part though is the hammer. Now THAT"S a serious Mjolnir. Just get rid of the horns on his helmet. :P

Spidey
11-09-2009, 02:06 PM
Thanks, Ra. Actually starting to dislike it. :/
Ray, I drew that for my nephew a while ago. Raphael is actually my least favorite turtle.
Thanks, Loston.
Hades, I just picked up the metal bands not long ago. I think it looks, but is still functional. I tried ti get a little Celtic design in hammer, but it ended up looking weird. The horns stay.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/Spyderizzle/Donatello.png

i really like this

front of his right foot seems off to me though
like he's got three toes instead of toe; and that the line between the Big toe and second toe is missing; and also that they're smaller than his left toes

sirandal
03-03-2011, 08:32 PM
It appears to me to be a side shot of his right foot and you can only really see the "big" toe (with the other one peeping over it from the backside of the shot.)

Maybe I'm wrong.

Spidey
03-03-2011, 08:37 PM
That's correct, Sirandal. It's only the knuckle from the other toe.

Whune
03-03-2011, 08:56 PM
That's correct, Sirandal. It's only the knuckle from the other toe.

hrm...

maybe it's just that the wrap - over the foot - is going to another vanishing point than the foot is;
and also that the line of the top of the foot is as if the foot was drawn facing more to the front;
all of which is what led me to believe that the foot was facing more to the front, and hence: that the toes were all off lookin.

Spidey
03-03-2011, 09:06 PM
I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to describe. You can overlay a drawing if you wish.

Whune

I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to describe. You can overlay a drawing if you wish.

http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz182/Whune/Donatello.jpg

Purple = general perspective path of the foot as you rendered it.

green = proposed perspective path, with foot facing more forward

blue = my re-draw of foot; all proposed perspective path; utilizing the original line of the top of foot.

orange = drawing over the strap; in the same perspective path as what you drew;
and my point is that it actually matches my proposed perspective path of the foot'
which is why the toes looked funny to me

sirandal
03-03-2011, 09:33 PM
I can see the confusion. What you think is a strap is actually the foot (at least to my eye). The strap is the very thin (Japanese-style) thong strap at the "front" of what you are taking to be the strap. Wasn't ambiguous to me, but after you point it out, I can see how it might be interpreted that way.

Spidey
03-04-2011, 12:24 AM
Ah, okay. Now I see what you mean about the three toes. It's one of those "once you see it..." things. The foot on the left is a straight on profile view. Sort of like these.
http://www.corbisimages.com/images/67/3FA00CF3-D5C1-43B9-B727-2199FFCD27B3/42-15972179.jpg
Sirandal is aright about the sandal straps. The perspective you laid out in green is a little exaggerated for the foot pointing towards us. The plane of the floor is pretty flat. I only lowered his toe on the page to show a bit of depth.

Whune

ooooh

i c

still... now I look it... with that knowledge... i see a foot caught in limbo of to different views.
neither of which looks right (to me) because of the aforementioned lines.
to me the effect is a lot like the mess I had with my monkey-heads in my "sexy fairy tales: wiz of oz" pic

just feedback

I'm glad he's invincible, because he's kicking himself in the balls :)

I like the googles and mask treatment. Not so sure about the uncovered arms, but I think if you stick with that, avoid yellow in the color scheme. Go dark with the blue and black type variant costume he had, or something along those lines to man it up more.

Spidey
10-29-2011, 12:48 AM
I was thinking of using yellow for light accents. Like in the goggles, gloves and maybe soles. I'll play around with the colors once I settle on the design, but I think you may be right.

That's pretty dang slick man! I like the "classic" colors even better. The bracers need to look more like bracers though. Right now it looks like he's wearing gloves over gloves.

At least he's not wearing a dress. ;)

Thanks, Mase. I just wanted to try something different with the goggles. I'm sure it will be hit or miss with the judges. I honestly didn't think too much about the gloves. I kinda just went for a go-to design aesthetic that I think a lot of designers have in their own arsenal. I might consider revamping the gloves.

Alex, they aren't really supposed to be bracers. I think that's a little redundant considering he's virtually invulnerable. I just wanted the bracer aesthetic. I figure they're more neoprene in appearance.

I tried modifying the gloves, but I'm not too crazy about them. I think shortening them might help, but I would have to bare more of the arms which is not what I originally wanted.

The time away from the board hasn't hurt your skills. You do seem to have improved, as Morg suggested. Sometimes it just takes time for learned info to process and congeal in an artist's brain. Oscar, it looks like your brain has done a lot of processing in the last few months!

Spidey

Loston, yeah, I guess although I haven't been practicing my art regularly I have been paying attention to the way things look and thinking about how I would draw them. I've also been taking mental notes on certain styles and thinking what about them intrigued me the most.

Thanks, Morgan. Hopefully it sticks this time.

Drew, that was the trickiest part actually. I blocked in all the dark shapes first then shaded the rest in lightly. It looked retarded so I just freehand shaded until I thought it looked passable.

Thank you, Monsieur Crime Royale with cheese.

That was pretty good. He got most of them, but I drew all lightweights and he named a few fighters from different weight classes.
1. Is Eddie Alvarez, former lightweight champ from Bellator
3. Is Gray Maynard, former UFC title challenger
6. Is Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone
10. Is Michael Chandler, current Bellator lightweight champ.
12. Is Jorge Masvidal, former Strikeforce title contender and co-star of Kimbo Slice streetfight videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtPlJvjIQs8)
15. Is Edson Barboza, current top 10 UFC lightweight and owner of one of the most vicious heelkick knockouts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=e5v7MmXeSoI#t=257s).
