Between 5 to 8 members, anyone who's ever been an X-Man, allie, New Mutant, X-Force, X-Factor, Excalibur, Gen X, X-Statix member, etc. is available, even if they're dead because let's face it, they're not dead.

The Astonishing line-up is as close to perfect as possibile, as far as I'm concerned. These are all interesting characters, with interesting relationships.

My only change might be the addition Storm and Nightcrawler onto the team.

So, that would be:

Cyclops
Wolverine
Beast
Colossus
Emma Frost
Shadowcat
Storm
Nightcrawler

Who the heck is Dead Girl?

X-Statix character. I'm not sure what her powers are, since I've never read the series, but I do know this is what she looks like:

http://mental-baggage.net/pictures/misc/deadgirl.jpg

Spidey
04-28-2006, 07:18 PM
Physically deceased, Dead Girl can command any body part severed from her and rebuild herself from virtually any physical attack, regardless of how much damage or destruction she sustains, even if reduced to a skeleton. She can safely survive toxic conditions deadly to anyone else. She can also become intangible and walk on air, transform her hands into claws, and otherwise alter her body to an unclear extent. She can communicate telepathically with dead spirits either using their physical remains or on the astral plane, temporarily resurrect the recently deceased as zombies or ghosts, and briefly summon images of deceased people from the minds of others. She has above-average strength and agility.

My team would be more of the away team that handles
the aggresive mutant/human threats. So, here it goes:

Havok (leader)
Psylocke (female/telepath)
Gambit (anti-hero)
Longshot (good luck)
Dazzler (weakest link)
Richochet (narrator)

Wade8813

For getting the job done:

Rogue - strength, flight, absorbing (just in case)
Wolverine - healing, adamantium, enhanced senses, fighting ability
Jean Grey (old version) - telepathy, tk
Nightcrawler - teleporting, fighting ability
Storm - flight, weather control
Bishop - energy absorption, energy blasts, XSE tactics, knowledge of future
Polaris - Magnetic control, flight
Longshot - hard to argue with good luck

Each character brings something different to the field (altough TK and magnetism usually overlap, it's arguably the best ability, so whatever).

Most of the characters I didn't choose for my team overlap in less favorable ways. People like Cyke might have more powerful energy blasts than Bishop, but the ability to absorb energy is invaluable. Juggernaut might be more of a tank than Rogue, but she doesn't weigh as much (making Teleporting easier), and while she doesn't like doing it, the ability stealing can save the day. And I'm fairly sure Colossus isn't as strong as Rogue or Juggy.

Teleporting can get you places that flying can't. Phasing can sometimes be even better, but I believe Shadowcat's more limited in the amount she can phase and the distance than Nightcrawler is. Also, 'porting is faster.

Weather control can avert disasters, and be useful for stealth. Lightning can help with ranged energy attacks, if Bishop needs it. A blizzard can accomplish much the same thing as Ice man sometimes.

You know, I actually considered this once... but when I did it... I rewrote everything... New team members, new histories, new villains, and just for giggles, I gender switched Xavier and married her to Magneto, now a good guy... When I find what I did with the rosters and info I drew up, I'll post it, but just wanted to throw my two cents in for the moment.

Xavior takes a more aggresive stance for mutants.

Squad A First line of Offense

Magneto (Brains behind the attack.)
Mimic (Come on its Mimic at 50% of 5 powers at once)
Forge (Its Forge enough said.)
Sabertooth (When you need people killed who better.)
Angel (Recon)
Dark Beast ( Well one beast is good. Two beast now were talking)

Squad B Second Line of Offense.

Wolverine (Slice em and dice of the team. As well as Stealth.)
Havoc (Havoc is just to cool not to have him in a team)
Beast (Brains behind this crew.)
Morph (Animate Series Comic relief )
Sinister (um BRING ON THE CLONES.)
Jamie Madrix. (Multiple Man is GOD.)

I'm sure that I could sit down and create an X-Men line-up that makes a lot of strategic sense on the battlefield or whatever, but I'm not feeling nerdy enough to do so at the moment. As far as a team of my favorites is concerned, here's my list:

Cyclops
Wolverine
Gambit
Rogue
Marrow
Cecelia Reyes
Xorn (even though he was really Magneto all along, I loved the guy)
Cannonball

***I don't understand why people hate on Marrow so much. Why don't people like her? Her power is no more ridiculous that Wolverine's when you think about it. In fact, she's essentially the female Wolverine. She's got bone knives instead of bone claws (because as we all know, the adamantium came later), and she's a generally pissy person. I think she adds a cool dynamic to the team as a sort of outspoken outcast who means well, but hates to let people know it. Marrow for life!

I hate Marrow because she was working with the Morlocks (if I recall) when they went into a night club and slaughtered a whole bunch of "non-Mutants" (AKA humans), and then ten seconds later she is on the X-Men.

When last I checked the X-Men were not looking for mass murderers (even with Wolverine) when they built teams.

Plus, bone weapons = suck
even on Wolvie (yay for adamantium).

The X-Men have had several murderers on their team before, plus they're all about rehabilitation, so I don't think it matters that Marrow's killed anyone. I like how you mention Wolverine yourself before anyone else has the chance to, by the way, as though that changes the fact that his inclusion on the team exposes the flaw in your argument.

As for bone weapons. I don't think they suck. I think that in Marrow's case they're pretty cool.

I guess the fact that she was involved in the "Mass Murder" of (cant remember how many..) innocent nightclub goers just months before being brought on to the team always sortve turned me off.

Not really the same as Wolverine killing people (soldiers and spies) while working in military service for the Canadian government, at least to me.

Doesnt matter in the long run though. Just an odd choice for an X-Men dream team in my opinion.

The dynamic between her and Storm was the only good part about bringing Marrow onto the team. It was nice to see her interact with the woman who tore out her heart/bomb a mere 25 or so issues before. I did dig Logan taking her to school though. That was a great fight at Pacheco's peak man!

I also enjoyed the Storm/Marrow dynamic, because Storm really did her best to try and nurture Marrow.
One thing about Marrow that is always left out is that she is the same little girl Gambit took out of the Morlock Massacre, the mutant "Sarah" whose original power was to be able to see the good in absolutely anyone. She grew up bitter and vengeful in an alternate dimension and came back F#*$ed up all to hell. Gambit is the only one who knows who she really is (and as she holds his memories I guess so does Rogue).
And as for bones as weapons; deer, moose, elk, bulls, rhinos... they all have weapons made of bone covered in keratin (the same material in fingernails and even hair)- so really... I dunno just me.

Havok (Plasma aka not pathetic optic blasts)
Archangel (Angel of Death nuff said)
Iceman (Emma took over his body and did great stuff plus Sub-zero personality that needs development)
Beast (Brains and comic relief coupled with the ability to make Iceman actually come out of his shell)
Collosus (Powerhouse whose strongest attribute is his heart)
Magik (Can you say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned)
Magma (Supreme attitude mixed with the power of the volcanic earth)
Cable (TK and guns ablazing coupled with the idea that the future sucks no matter what you do)
Dust (Best new X character in years)

To make a book work you need dynamics and conflict. Whether it is in the area of powers, personality or backgrounds it leads to plot and character development. What better way to do this than have a leader who has family ties to a member that was bastardized by your do gooder brother and the woman you thought you loved then be able to explore the awkwardness of the relationship between the two. Then watch the dynamic of the heartfelt Powerhouse and his demonic sister, just how far will he go to protect her and what she will do to go to prove she no longer needs him. Throw in a underused extremely powerful volcanic female and see if the romatic loser Iceman can finally warm up in personality and her cool her temperamant and you have romantic elevation. Let a newcomer that actually has some personality depth and is deeply conflicted in her religious stance and team her with three other generations as well as a demon sorcerous from hell plus the ever somber Angel of Death and you have character development out of this world. Put some comedy from the blue furry king of antics that you can use irony to no end. This makes for a team that can last for more than one story...and further the progression of character development that holds more interest which leads to a great team dynamic and conflict at every turn whether it is internal or external.
