View Full Version : Comics and their film counterparts

Well i figured i'd start a thread (though i'm sooo probably NOT the first person to talk about this on this board) about comics and how often they die a horrible death on the big screen.
So out of morbid curiousity, how many comics would you say have translated well (go ahead and list em if you want to kill time lol)
How many do you think have gone down like James Cameron's Career after his titanic speech?
And which ones do you think might make a good film.
Myself, I'd say x-men, superman I, constantine, from hell, a history of violence, batman (either tim burton's or the new Christian Bale), sin city & the road to perdition are the ones that have made the best leap to the big screen
the worst: daredevil, elektra, captain america, spiderman (sorry guys i really really detest toby as spiderman, and well spiderman II was an improvement... i just wasn't interested), League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (and i LOVE that comic *sniff*), Batman forever, Batman and Robin & spawn
Possible Future Film Careers: Transmetropolitan, V for Vendetta (which i know it will be out in March, but i think it can work... if they don't flub it up), Y the last man... maybe?
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (if remade could be great)
Gambit... wellllll you'd really need a good script writer to keep if from getting cheesy. But i'd like to see Vincent Cassel take him on.
okay that's my opinion. Any takers? :p

Well when they put out films like Daredevil and The Punisher that could be a maybe

Electra and Catwoman was an example of spending millions on proving the obvious- they're called "supporting" characters for a reason ie they weren't written to have series of their own!

and LXG is an example of not spending enough (or rather spending it all on connery) to try and fix an already bad script.
I'll admit i list it among my favorite cheesey films, but really really i realize it's bad and NOTHING like the comic. I'd love to see them redu it. *le sigh* never gonna happen. :(

I liked Daredevil until they introduced Elektra :/

One of the main things going against it is that he has a strong and oft times annoying accent. That one factor pretty much kills any chance of a commercial success.
It might not be so bad if they dispensed with the accent or got a real Cajun to play him, but no matter what they do it is gonna make somebody mad.
Another question is Gambit interesting enough to carry a movie solo. The few solo stories I've read of him have all sucked.

i donno, we dont know just HOW annoying that accent is, as we've only seen it in print (and well the cartoon show, but that's a CARTOON and listen to what they did to Storm, she sounds like some shakespearean trained actress... yikes!)
So he could sound kinda southern with a flair for cajun words to fly out with his dialogue (think mortisha adams, but with less of an affect on the person he's talking to... oh what am i saying "Remy that's french!... mooch, mooch, mooch!" works for him too lol)
Honestly as i watch Lost, after hearing silly rumors that they considered Sawyer for the role, i see it more and more. Especially last night's frog episode (um up until the last few minutes of the frog part... poor frog)
BUT my choice would be this man:

VINCENT CASSEL (sorry the pic's so big)

dye his hair and tell me he's NOT a gambit type (the first pic seems MADE for the role lol). He's already french (instant accent if you choose to run with the accent)
He's good at playing crooks with the heart of gold.
He's just fun.
So get a good script (the most important part of ANY film in my opinion... then again i'm a writer) and maybe they could pull Gambit off.

To be fair, Cassel is one cool mofo. Damn, if only there was a mutant that resembled Jean Reno...

Forget, Gambit.... with a pic like that if you loose the accent, tell me that wouldn't make a great Joker for the new Bats flick.

A Gambit film? Wha? What next, 'Jubilee' the movie?
I cannot see how they would make this film with it being lame. Vincent Cassel would be good for the role, if they did think of making one though. I think he played the master thief in Ocean's 12, didn't he?...I would rather endure prolonged anal surgery than watch that film again...so I won't check.

well, no there isn't actually a FILM in progress i just threw it out there to see if people thought it (or other comics and their characters) could make it on film.
I think if handled right it could work. For example if Bryan Singer and company got ahold of it (then again he's due to lay and egg, he's just had too many good movies. I'm fearful that superman returns might just be THAT egg)
Anyway, with a good script, a realistic storyline (not stupid elektra or daredevil, puke) perhaps NOT pulling in all the x men, just keep it the theives guild stuff, it could work.
Not sure if rogue should be involved. I think it's one of those things were too many heroes could spoil the soup.

It would be best as a completely solo movie with nothing more than vague allusions to the other stuff.
They could bring him into X-men later.

While you're at it, put the cart before the horse. At least with Electra, the casual audience had become familiar via the first film (idiot idea as that still is). This way, the audience watches a movie which "alludes to X-Men".
At a complete push, you could do a Wolverine movie and have him in it as a supporting character. But as I said before, they're called supporting characters for a reason.
And not wishing to disrespect Hugh Jackman, but I don't think he alone is enough to carry a film.

true, i agree as much as i love hugh and wolvie i am a bit worried if they can carry the film alone (look at HELSING... *shudder*)
BUT does Gambit even have a reason to run into Wolverine? I mean, do they hang out together (i honstly don't know) Do they hate each other. What i remember of the cartoon was occasionally they would hang together. But you see they're both the brooding bad boy (gambit is far more playful mind you and less bad... also more stable, what i know of him anyway). So i donno know how that would work. Anyone care to enlighten me?
As much as i detested the punisher film, if you want another character bring in the punisher guy... Thomas... Jayne? Payne... what the hell is his name??
He and wolverine already have a slew of comics together. That might work.

Yeah, I saw the Wolvie/Gambie comic in my local newsagent and made the assumption people knew about that (I know, poor posting on my part!)
