Yahdman's JLA challenge and discussion with friends about characters to use prompted me to check out some newer JLA collections. I was mainly looking into the Obsidian Age story, but I wasn't going to waste $12 - so I tracked down the first book at the library.

They also had a ton of JLA collections and the last JLA collection I read was the Mark Waid story where Batman beats up the league.

Firstly, I like Mahnke's art. It's wonky at times and I really don't care for his Wonder Woman, but other than that - it's not hard on the eyes.

Joe Kelly's writing on the other hand really bored me to death. Which is kind of surprising since I recall reading that he was supposed to be a good writer.

I forced my way through the Golden Perfect arc of the collection and then stopped at the Plastic Man / Batman story. The story struck me as very disjointed and through lack of text and poor storytelling through pictures, stuff like absolute truths slowly deteriorating just popped out of nowhere, and not in a good way like an M. Night Shyamalan movie ending.

The dialogue felt forced. The conflict, and this is a problem with a lot of these stories, affected a global scale; but the details of it were barely touched on.

I'd prefer for a story that affects everything in a particular universe be relegated to cross overs, or big events. Stuffing it into a monthly just doesn't cut it for me.

I really liked the Grant Morrison run on JLA, and Mark Waid was okay as well, but Joe Kelly really doesn't do it for me. Is he still writing the book?

Na razie,

Greg

I'll give it a crack, but I'm taking the rest of the lot back to the library. :\

I did find it really funny that the story arc seemed to center around the death of Aquaman, and in typical fashion -- there was no publicity surrounding it. :P
