I should start by letting you know I have no artistic talent and that is why I LOVE finding sites like this so that I'm able to see FAR better artists as they're starting and watch them grow. I truly enjoy it!
I'm such a huge comic geek that even Beau Smith gave me a shout-out for my support of the community! http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/busted/113145872833568.htm
I'd love to do whatever I can to help all of you gain as much exposure as you can!
Without further ado, here's my art. Enjoy! :D

technique is important, but storytelling is vastly more important (in my view).
These tell a nice story. You can work on your technique. Just keep doing what you are doing. Listen to the crits you get around here, and keep at it.

We all started drawing because it was fun and had something to say, and we all sucked at some point and maybe still do, and their is always somebody better than you no matter how good you are so i wouldn't worry about it.

Not really sure if this was posted in the right forum.
I would of liked to just have the drawings posted, this feels like just an advertisement for your site rather than posting your sketches for peoples enjoyment or crits, maybe it's just me. I wasn't trying to be mean, that's just the impression i was left with, i like your stuff and i bookmarked your site, this just kind of felt like spam to me.

Sorry about that rubbertrunk! If there is a separate forum for reviews I'll happily edit this post and move them over!
Part of the deal of having an exclusive column and banner at that site was that I promise them exclusivity with regards to my new reviews. I've been slacking on the request end and when I finish some more of those I will definately post them here. I was thrilled to hear you bookmarked me!!! :D

I just felt if you poted under sketches you should post some sketches. I think announcing your website in general discussion and posting artwork in relevent catagories would be nice, i don't want to have to wade through extranious information. And i really don't like it when people link to devart, it takes forever to load and has emoticons and blog enteries and all this other crap i don't care about. I know you didn't intend it like that. Maybe it's just me and nobody else minds, but something to keep in mind perhaps. Keep up the good work.

Actually I did click the links thus the reason why I saw art of yours that I had already seen. I didn't bother reading the reviews because they have nothing to do with this forum. The fact you didn't even write them is even more reason why they shouldn't be posted here.
Brian LaBelle
03-19-2006, 12:13 PM
Manji, the list of exclusive pics you have not seen anywhere else includes:
Hawkman #47
Season of the Witch #3
Green Lantern Corps Recharge #4
Son of M #3
New Avengers #15
New Avengers #16
Action Comics #836
All DC books for the month of April
30 Days of Night OGN
Detective Comics #817
& Outsiders #34
I write about the picture before I hand the pic in to my editor, they're not true critical reviews of comics and I do not try to pass them off as such. As the banner at SBC says: "Reviews in 1 panel" Not 50 words or less.
I'm not sure what you're saying.
I shouldn't post art here or links to where the art is and I also shouldn't describe the art in any fashion that involves words? Am I hearing that correctly? Because that pretty much eliminates every post on this site?!? Is the purpose of this site not to share and discuss artwork?

Manji's saying that posting links to "reviews" that you've done has it's place here, and it's not in the sketch section. There's a section called "bulletin board" that is set aside for self-promotion. It's also generally frowned upon to keep bumping your thread by continuing to update it.
misfitX
03-19-2006, 05:01 PM
Is it?
I prefer it this way, so people don't clutter up the main forum. I mean, I know that's not the regular practice, but if it's not against the rules then...
Brian LaBelle
03-19-2006, 08:17 PM
I won't tell a lie and I'm not exagerating, the reason I'm doing that column is directly related to posting my art here and having it get noticed by the right people. Those people include fellow Penciljackers and it would seem ignorant to quit posting for the people who helped me get to where I am with these.
As for it being frowned upon to only post in 1 thread, I'm not sure that's a wise approach. If you update and get 2 hits and receive confirmation that nobody is interested, maybe stop posting. If people continue to look it seems like the smartest thing to do.
Read Wizard #170 and look at this thread; www.comicbloc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9984 and try to tell me that creating a portfolio within a crit thread didn't help Nicola Scott. ;)

Nobody's telling you to stop posting, I'm just saying that the self-promotion belongs in the Bulletin Board section, and that generally it's preferred to have images posted individually or as small dumps. The forum is for critiques, and when one thread keeps jumping to the top it takes attention away from other artists.
That said, it's very cool that you got the gig, congrats.
Brian LaBelle
03-20-2006, 01:07 PM
I'm ALWAYS open to crits and suggestions! If there are any cartoonists that have some helpful feedback, I'm all ears! If I keep getting good job, keep it up, I will but I'm certainly not above some honest critiquing. That is what I'm hoping for here.
If you don't mind me saying, creating new threads for every picture does much more harm to bumping pictures out of the way than each artist posting one thread containing all of their work. When I see people doing that, I tend to bookmark them so that I can watch them grow and not have to worry about digging through 3-4 pages.
And I don't know if anyone can honestly say they've never responded to feedback a day or two later to keep their thread near the top and hopefully get more views. One thread really does let you build up a portfolio and I'd recommend trying it. Granted, I could have picked a better thread title but, it's working.
Thanks again for looking!

Your photobucket bandwidth was exeeded, you myspace page loads terrible. Why don't you use imageshack and post your sketch directly to this board, i'd rather not have to navigate all over the place to see your images. It makes it easier for people to see your stuff and c&c it. Just a suggestion.

Hey RubberTrunk! I may have to do that. I recently opened a third photobucket account and those older pictures should be back up soon. I had over 100,000 hits this month so they cut me off till the end of the month.

It's time to smash some planets
It's time to dim their lights
It's time to right some old wrongs on the New Earth Show tonight.
It's time to try new makeup
It's time to dress the heroes right
It's time to raise the curtain on New Earth Show tonight.
Why do we always come here
I guess we'll never know
It's like a kind of torture
To have to wait and see the show
And now let's get things started
Why don't you get things started
It's time to get things started

Sorry, Brian, but whether you think it's harmful or not, we don't allow the continual bumping of threads in the standard Lab forums. That's why I created this Sketch Blog forum, so folks could just post their artwork til their hearts' content. Which is why I moved this thread here to begin with.
However, I didn't realize you were using it as such a blatant promotional venue. That's only appropriate for the Bulletin Board. If you want to continue promoting your work and yourself, then please feel free to do so. But please adhere to the standards we have here. Don't continually bump posts when it's not appropriate.
This thread has gone on quite long enough. I'm closing it now. If you want to start your own Sketch Blog anew, then by all means feel free to do so. But don't post links to your reviews and so forth. That's not the purpose of this or any of the Lab forums.
