I picked up this collection from the library to see what all the fuss was about.
Rough Stuff collects the self published run of The Goon, three issues, some web comics, and a nice skethbook that shows the evolution of the characters. I believe these were also colored for the graphic novel, to add some allure.
In a nutshell: The Goon and Franky are two guys, one big thug, one small Joe Pesci style thug, who live in a world populated with monsters and all sorts of weirdness. The three issues in the collection cover The Goon's run ins with a local evil priest who is trying to amass a zombie army, and put the kibosh on The Goon.
Powell comments in the introduction that this book is called Rough Stuff for a reason, because he was still pretty green when making the issues. That doesn't detract from the book in any way. Some of the stories are a bit weak, but not so weak that it's unbearable to read; there are just some weird transitions in the issues, and the pacing is a bit clunky.
It's still a fun read.
Powell's art, in the later stuff, reminds me a bit of Will Eisner / Hillary Barta. It's fun to look at and has an old school flavor. Although Franky in Rough Stuff is a bit disconcerting to look at next to the other characters. Similar to how Amy, IIRC, the daughter is Savage Dragon can look really out of place at times.
I'd suggest this book to fans of Savage Dragon or Hellboy. It's a lot of light hearted fun, and I'll definitely seek out the other collections.
Na razie,
Greg
