View Full Version : JAMBOREE #15: Childhood Drawing

Welcome to week fifteen of Penciljack's official weekly Jamborees!
This week's Jamboree is the "Childhood Drawing Jamboree!". The concept behind this is simple. I need you to tap into that inner child. Revert back to your youth. Now, pick up your pencil (or crayon...or whatever) and draw. Draw those old familiar things you loved as a kid. Try to draw it with the same brain and hands you did it with as a kid.
Really, you can interpret this Jamboree in any way you want, but just try to tap back into that child that still lives inside all of us and let it have its voice back.
This one should have plenty of participation, because EVERYONE drew when they were a kid. So take some time off of your busy schedules and participate in this fun weekly activity. Remember, this isn't for crits, or competition, or anything other than fun.
Any medium, be it traditional or digital, and take as much time as you'd like. Your only limits are the regular posting guidelines. (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29914)
This Jamboree will be up for seven days, then like usual, a new one will replace it. But don't worry, all old Jamborees can be found in the Community Projects (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42) forum, and can be posted in as often as you'd like.
I'm going to borrow some crayons from work tomorrow to do my jigs. I think I'll do a few. Backstory to accompany these drawings would be nice, too. Let us know where you're comin' from.

Draw childhood characters. Draw stuff from your youth. Or draw poorly. Any way you interpret it.

Ok I tapped into that lil grade schooler/junior high kid that I once was. I use to draw these lame monster trucks, I tried to draw it now with the same details I can remember using. Here ya go.
It was this and Monsters, mostly monsters but these Trucks were pretty much the same everytime, so it's easy to remember.

I honestly can't remember what I used to draw as a kid.
I might could get my mother to scan or send me some of that stuff she kept from when I was like, two, though, and then post it with maybe a retake on it, maybe?
I do remember when I worked for a kid's magazine and they told me to fake up some drawings that look like children drew them, so they could print them in the magazine as "fan art"... I had an ethics fit and told the boss to stick it, and so he just got his wife to draw them instead, and I got a reputation for "making things difficult". Ahhhh, the fun-filled world of art...

When I was kindergarten age, most of my drawings were ninja turtles, mummys, and spiders. At about 4th or 5th grade, all my artwork was star wars or top gun stuff.
While I'm not a horrible artist, when I'm really bored I'll let my inner child loose and just draw whatever I feel like at the time, more concepts than anything.
So heres somthing I drew recently with some throwback style, I drew the airplanes like I used to back in grade school, but the horrible handwriting of mine is not dumbed down, I just have very bad handwrititng that hasn't changed since 2nd grade.

When I first came to the States, they re- released Mazinger Z in english and gave him the name "Tranzor Z". Everyone else was watching Voltron (which I hated because, to me, Mazinger was the only super robot worth watching and he came first anyway) and I was watching Mazinger. So when it came to drawings, I was making up clones of Mazinger Z. So, without further ado, Traitor T (go easy on me, I din't speak English at the time and I din't know what "traitor" meant)

heres some stuff from when i was about 12 yrs old, its my 1st wolverine pic i ever did, and a bonus Alf pic, from my comic days before i realize superheros are a hell of alot better comics.
http://www.artwanted.com/images/large/8627_193883.jpg
and also here is some art, i did from this tv show that came on only on pbs in the early mornings before school, i was about 8 yrs old then, and i used to idolize this guy, cause of his cool landscapes and futuristic cities he drew. i'd get up extra early just so i could watch whatever drawing tips he had, and if i remember correctly he even had some muppets on there that would run around the stage messing up his studio, i don't remember the name of the show but it came on before Fraggle Rock every weekday on pbs.

I couldn't find any old stuff, but instead I present to you, the Gingerbread Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
When I was little, I drew the TMNT a LOT. I'd take a page of printer paper and fill it up with a giant fight between the TMNT and their friends versus the Shredder and his Foot cronies. In order to be as efficient as possible in drawing these pages full of characters I devised a conveyer belt method of drawing characters. And now thanks to these simple steps, you to can do the same!
http://www.fetorpse.com/images/sketches/newass/gmnt.jpg
You can change it up for some for the more complicated characters, and characters who have different head shapes (Splinter, Bebop, Rocksteady), but you get the idea.

hahah! you could make a "how to draw the nate way" book with that! those turtles are super cute!
Maybe i'll try and throw in some princesses and horses - standard motifs for a young lass.
I tried mailing matt for a next jamboree suggestion: try to make out what the bearer of this (authentic) calling card would look like...
