This is an incredibly cinematic, old school crime comic by Italy's wonderful Igort. I love revenge stories, and 5 is the Perfect Number tracks one retired mob member's killing spree to avenge his son's murder.

The whole thing reads like a Scorcese movie, and each page is proof of just how much more advanced Italy's cartoonists are in terms of storytelling. Igort uses very slow, gentle pacing in some scenes, which makes the explosions of violence all the more powerful.

Igort's deceptively simple use of line and shadow go a long way in terms of setting atmopshere. This is a must for any fan of crime comics and crime movies.

The pacing in this story actually reminds me alot of Beat Takeshi's in his movie Fireworks, where the violence seemed alot more brutal and disturbing following an enormous build up to it.

I saw this in your blog, too. I'll have to track it down this summer.

I'm going to get this soon. If I can find a job.

The preview pages on Amazon looked cool.
