Welcome to week fourteen of Penciljack's official weekly Jamborees!
This week's Jamboree is the "Hector Plasm Jamboree!". You may or may not be familiar with Penciljack's own Benito Cereno and Akira X's original character of Hector Plasm. He's appeared in backups in Invincible and in Western Tales of Terror.
Here's some reference pictures and character descriptions.
http://www.fetorpse.com/images/hectorscheme.jpg
He wears a coat (http://www.fetorpse.com/images/hectordesigncoat.jpg) over that gear, too. And here's a better detailed sketch of his shortsword Astyanax (http://www.fetorpse.com/images/astyanax.jpg). Or an even better one by danimation (http://dandojo.com/images/dojoDEN/color%20sketches/nonreferenced/hector-sword.jpg).
Here's his travelpals, Saint and Sinner.
http://www.fetorpse.com/images/charsheet.jpg
And here's a page (http://www.fetorpse.com/images/strips/wil3.jpg) outta one of his first appearances
Finally, some character descriptions from Nate.
Hector Plasm
Age: [SEEKRIT!]
Height: 6'
Weight: 150 lbs
Hair: Black
Eyes: Blue
Ethnicity: [SEEKRIT!]
Grifter, drifter, hobo, conman, shaman, medicine man, witch doctor, vodun priest, exorcist. Hector Plasm is all these things. Recognizable by his dark, sunken eyes, jagged scar and a shock of black hair that always seems to stick up. He always wears black (because it matches with everything) and is fond of the brand name 4humors motorcycle-style jackets.
His skin isn't pale so much as it is "colorless." That is, there is no one set tone for his entire face, he looks misleadingly unhealthy. His eye sockets are dark and brown as if he hasn't slept decently for years. His cheeks flush easily, his face turns pink and his nose turns red when it is cold, and his stubble shows even after shaving. His blue eyes are such that, when they reflect the light a certain way, seem unnatural. His scar pulls and disfigures his bottom lip and carves into his chin. His receding hairline grips tenaciously to his forehead through his widower's peak.
Around his neck he wears a metal locket in the shape of a Greek cross, inside he keeps his neatly folded [SEEKRIT!]. Around his waist he wears a utility belt with several canvas pouches in which he keeps charms, trinkets, and herbs. Tied to his belt on his left side is the scabbard for his shortsword, Astyanax. On his right side is the sheath for his Chinese sword. Hector is more than a competent fighter. He is skilled in several martial arts and excels in sword fighting. In hand to hand combat he specializes in dodging, evasion and redirection of force.
Saint
Age: 50+
Height: 7+'
Weight: NA
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: White
Alignment: Chaotic good
Taciturn and acromegalic, Saint spent [SEEKRIT!]. As time passed he [SEEKRIT!]
He wears a long white duster and a white hat, on his back he carries a guitar. His dress is simple, shirt, vest, pants all white. He wears a red handkerchief on his neck to [SEEKRIT!]. His silver belt buckle is decorated with the symbol of Saint Michael, balancing scales inside a shield.
Saint always appeared faded, oddly out of place, and is for the most part unaffected by ambient light.
Sinner
Age: 30+/-
Height: 5' 9"
Weight: NA
Hair: Black
Eyes: White
Alignment: Lawful evil
[SEEKRIT!] at the pinnacle of the beat movement, Sinner lived on drugs, coffee, cigarettes and anarchy. Between poetry jams and jazz sessions he [SEEKRIT!]. He is a coward at heart.
He wears a striped grey and black sweater, black beret, sunglasses, black pants, and sandals. His toe and fingernails are naturally black. He wears a short pointed goatee and moustache in the Van Dyck style. Two short red horns grow out of his forehead above his eyes.
Sinner always appears to be veiled in shadow no matter what environment he is in.
Take some time off of your busy schedules and participate in this fun weekly activity. Remember, this isn't for crits, or competition, or anything other than fun.
Any medium, be it traditional or digital, and take as much time as you'd like. Your only limits are the regular posting guidelines. (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29914)
This Jamboree will be up for seven days, then like usual, a new one will replace it. But don't worry, all old Jamborees can be found in the Community Projects (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42) forum, and can be posted in as often as you'd like.
I'll post my jig up later this week. Have at it, kids.

Just a couple notes:
What exactly does Hector do? He tries to help ghosts cross over which sometimes resorts to fighting (and destroying) them. He also fights demons.
Astyanax is only 18 inches long from the tip of the blade to the end of the handle. Its just a little thing.
His other sword is the same kind as the Green Destiny sword from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Uh, I guess thats all.

Sweeet!
I'm in for this. I promised Benito a piece of Hector fanart ever since I saw the first backup. This is just the reference I needed.
-EDIT-
Rough try numero uno:
http://inkthinker.cryhavok.org/PJ/Hector_Plasm_sk01.jpg
When you say he wears a "4humors" brand motorcycle jacket, that's a made-up brand, right? Is there an equivalent real-world cut that would serve as an example?
The skin tone in the model sheet seems to contradict with the tone defined in the description as "colorless". I went with a sort of sickly pale.
The reference links on the fetorpse server appear to be down.

When you say he wears a "4humors" brand motorcycle jacket, that's a made-up brand, right? Is there an equivalent real-world cut that would serve as an example?
Its made up, and it was kind of a backwards design. I guess I just started drawing them and thought "okay, what are these? well, I guess they look like motorcycle jackets kind of." So thats what they "are" I guess. Anyway, here are more examples.
http://www.fetorpse.com/images/sketches/summer04/summer30.jpg
http://www.fetorpse.com/images/hectordesign.jpg
And by "colorless" I guess I actually meant "many colors", in that his skin isn't one set color, it always looks different depending on the circumstance. Which is what happens with regular people's skin, but I guess it happens to him to a greater extent. ...Or something.
Awesome drawing too.
(Our site seems to be running kind of spotty lately. So if images don't show up for you, try back in a couple of minutes.)

So being only familiar with Plasm through the first issue of Western Tales... (I know, I know...) What are the "abilities" of his fellow travelers? That link above makes me think that Sinner is pyrokinetic? And what are the properties of Hector's sword?

They mostly just stand around. Sometimes they talk.
He can be.
It cuts things. It can manipulate fire. More things you haven't seen yet.
Also, who came up with the idea for this jamboree? You may as well have just called it the "Benito and Nate Frottage Jamboree."

I don't know the "RULES" on this here thread (I ain't down with that fancy readin'), and I know I'm not around much but...
Nate (aka Akira X) did an AWESOME pin-up for THE EXPATRIATE #2 (that we ended up using as the back cover). So to REPAY the favor, AND just cause I think these guys are awesome, I give you....
YOUNG HECTOR PLASM and the CASE OF THE DEEP FRIED MONKEY!

Yeah, those aren't the rules at all...ASS. You should have posted this in the Jamboree thread. I'll give you time to do that, and then I'm deleting this. JERK!

I like that layout, but Hector is really concealed being all hunched up like that. Maybe if he was standing up, or kneeling...
Inkthinker
04-28-2005, 03:46 AM
Okay, how's this'n?
http://inkthinker.cryhavok.org/PJ/Hector_spell.jpg
I think some of the effect of the sidekicks standing on air is lost when they're not on head-level with him, but I like them being smaller in perspective and yet mimicking the whole shoulder-consciences schtick. Death's scythe is supposed to be a flagpole, but the layout sucks if I extend it out that far unless I totally flip it out for a double-page spread. Plus, I don't know what I'd put on the flag...
This is actually a pretty small sketch that's been blown up... the actual size is 5x7 or so. That spell circle is totally out of perspective, too... easy enough to fix in-system though.
Akira X
04-28-2005, 04:34 AM
Ben. Seriously. Stop.
Haha, naw, you're alright. I really like that reaper and the idea for the spell circle. I was going to mention before about the thumbs you did but I didn't think you'd have another up before I got to it. Anyway, the thumbs I really like are the one with his arm up, it looks like hes putting his coat on? with it all flapping up, the one on the very bottom left, and the one on the right side of him thrusting. I also really like the bird foot. Golly jeepers, these are all super duper.
I guess my only crit would be, and I'm not even sure its a valid one (I could be inferring the wrong thing), that he looks like he's brooding a lot, and Hector's not really the brooding type.
Also, would someone at least chuckle at my AWESOME slam I unleashed on Carter? Seriously, that thing took like an hour to make. I had better ways to spend my time :(

I LOVE the composition for the grim reaper flagpole one, Ben. The other one is really cool, too. And dammit, so are the thumbs.
Mine is coming along pretty decently, but SLOWLY. I'm actually tryin' on this one (instead of some dumb photoshop mockup) and I'm playin' a lot with poses and inking. I've been endlessly lightboxing what I like and playing s'more, then keeping bits and pieces I like and working on it more.
I think I'll probably be able to finish it up by the weekend.

Take it. Say nice things about me to people. Call it a mitzvah, my mother'll plotz, I'm so goyim.

I totally stole it from Champloo, anyway. And they got it from Japanese girls and their charm-laden cellphones. Also those charm bracelets that were pop when I was like, 12... and probably about a dozen other places where I seen it's been done. Darrow's done it a bunch.
:D
Chinese swords often have tassels anyway, and I could be going much nuttier with it. If I knew more symbols that applied to the character I probably would have.

yeah, that drawing is great. it needs that spell circle though. i am assuming it is going in during the photoshop phase. if not, i have a hissy fit on deck, queued up and good to go.

It's no done. The spell circle is the whole focus of the pic, of course... I'm taking a flat image in Photoshop and dropping it into perspective. I'm also considering taking the scythe out so that you can tell it's also a flagpole, which is why I haven't added the clouds yet either, or the moon. The bricks I'll do as a pattern and shift it into perspective. My beta of ComicStudio doesn't have the advanced Transform tool that Photoshop does, so I have to do it there. Luckily the software exports PSDs.
I'm not doing it tonight, though, 'cause I left the full res PSD at the studio. I'll still post it in this thread, though, so come and find it in the Projects forum.

Anyway, I was thinking about coloring it, but now there are a bunch of things about it that are bugging me, so I don't know.

Anyway, fellas. I'll have a new one up tonight. Sorry for the wait if you've been on the edge of your seat.

Keep rollin' with Hector, kids.
The new Jamboree is gonna be up on Sunday. The Wednesday/New Comics Day correlation was nice 'n all, but no one here buys comics anyway, so I think we'll start the new Jamborees on Sundays at Midnight.
Any objections? No? Okay, good.
Sunday it is!

???
What's your point?
This IS week 14.
Edit: NOW I see what you're getting at. Apparently Matty just copies the opening body of the previous Jamboree to get the next one started, editing parts as needed to reflect the new guidelines for the new jamboree. It just seems that he forgot the edit that opening line. 13 was the alien loves predator jamboree.
