Edit: Nuts, this goes in the other forum, above this one. Sorry mods.

I've been giving some thought to background drawing, and the importance of the skill in drawing comics.

How about we find reference photos of cities, cafes, and such and just have a scheduled session where Penciljackers practice up on drawing the inane stuff they don't regulary focus on drawing?

The goal wouldn't be accuracy, so much as rendering the scene so that it is recognizable. Sort of like the bang up stuff in the Will Eisner sketchbook. Although crazy technical drawing is swank too. Like those insane Japanese location photoreference books.

Where could we put it?

I'm leaning towards the illustration lab.

I really like this idea...When i sit with my sketch book i tend to do figure drawing, but i really need to do backround type drawings...

didn't penciljack have a weekly assignment type tread in the past?

There might well have been one before I joined up.

I'll do some looking, and see if I can just get the ball rolling on this myself. It will be a bit spotty from time to time as my net access is limited to places away from home. :X

Ideally, I'd like to UL images to my own server and host the thread that way instead of remote linking and hogging somebody else's bandwidth.

Keep an eye out.

Greg

There was a forum called Critical Mass that was dedicated to different assignments every week. Lack of participation and decent critiques and material covered and moderation caused it to shut down.

I believe it's slated to make some kind of revamped come back, but you'll have to stay tuned.

If you wanted to do your own bi-weekly environment drawings, that'd be cool. It's possible some people would join you. Maybe something like Sketch Dumps.
