I was wondering, for those of you that have life insurance, does that cover loss or injury to bodyparts i.e. cover only your hand(s) in case of an accident?
Is there such a policy?

If you have a day job, like doing computer crap or whatever, the medical insurance usually offers a Accidental Death or Dismemberment policy. That's usually in case you're disabled enough that you can't do your job anymore (ie a programmer who's lost both arms.)

However, if you're thinking of like a Lloyds of London insuring J-Lo's ass type of thing, I think the premium to purchase such insurance in the end would far outweigh the actual cost of losing whatever income you may be drawing from drawing.

I'm sure some super famous artists have something like that, but I don't believe it's very common for the plebes.

You're actually talking about Health Insurance here, not Life Insurance. Health Insurance covers medical bills, Life is to care for your family in the event of an accident.

For Health Insurance, you have several options -

If you've just left a job, you can temporarily take your health insurance with you through COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985).

Another good option might be to go on your spouse's plan if he/she has a health insurance plan at work.

If neither of those options apply to you, you can use the 'net to shop around for a good self-employed health insurance package. There's plenty of places google will turn up that compare rates. It doesn't have to be expensive. The only thing I will say is check out the company's rating by A.M.Best, who rates all insurance companies. You're looking for one that's "A-", "A" "A+" or "A++", nothing lower.
