surprised no one has mentioned this book anywhere in this forum whatsoever.....
Firstly Id like to say I wish comics would return to the days of the Giant sized first issue. As nice as it was to have new ultimates the charm was only diminished by how quickly it was over.
Especially considering the ending was a not-quite cliffhanger.
The Captain America opening ,i think ,could have been better. it was just a little like a flat soda. Still good but no kick.
Although my appetite for the next few issues was whetted more by the allusion of whats to come with Thor by his 'conversation' with Volstagg. And cameo(?) of Loki(?). Reading the Millar interviews for Ultimates after reading this issue definitely enhanced the experience. Seems like theres only good things to expect from this series. Im a little saddened though that its only a 12 issue run.... again.
There seems like theres so much that could be said within this universe and if Millar and Hitch leave after this run it doesnt likely that it will be explored to its fullest. Unlike Authority, Millar is the right person to write this book and possibly wont be as enjoyable under another's helm.

This isn't really related, since I haven't read the issue yet, but I wish that people weren't able to take over a series without talking with the previous writer. I think the same thing should be with any kind of sequel. Too bad nobody gives a shit about anything other than munny.

yeah...but sometimes they are especially bad stories.
I so prefere the Ultimates over the Avengers. The characters are actually real. The Marvel U version of Captain America has always been really really stupid. The man fought in thee bloodiest war in modern history and acts like a nurses maid in the M.U.
In the Ulitmates...he's an actuall soldier yet he retains his 1940's sensibilities. He's the tough guy with a kind heart. M.U. he's a bitchy wally cleaver.

Agreed.
I think the way Cap is written is the main reason I read the ultimates. Spot on of how he should be imo.

I love the Ultimates, but the thing that pisses me off most about this new "giant-sized" issue is that half of it is ads. Literally, read through it. I counted 17 pages of adds. No sh*t. 17!!!!!!!!!!!! Disgraceful.

well Im sure Hitch and Millar are getting an Insane payroll for that book... marvel definitely needs the ads to defer cost. Im sure all those ads paid for their pay alone.

Yeah, I'm sure their getting plenty, but half a book of ads is rediculous. The book sells, so I'm sure Marvel is making quite enough from it. The thing is that if you turn the page you get an ad, turn the page again, another ad, and again, ad, ad aadaadadadadadadadada and so on. If I wanted a book full of ads I'd by Wizard, or better yet Vogue. I already pay 3 bucks for 20 something pages of story. No need to clog up my experience with crap. They should take notes from Image and put their ads at the end. Or at least most of them.

It's pretty much the only Marvel superhero book I'm reading. I really dig Hitch's art, but I espescially like the way the characters are written. If any series was tailor-made to become an HBO miniseries, this is it.
The number of ads was pretty damn irritating.

I'm hoping that was a one-off helmet for the Iraq rescue mission. But then it's on the cover, so I dunno.
And yeah, I prefer the old design too.

i saw the cover too issue 4 and it looks like Hitch did give cap a new design for his mask*still lame* and Captain Britian also was on the cover and he looks ok too me. at least his mask fits him better that Caps does.
I'm really enjoying this series (as I did Vol. 1). Hitch's art is great, and Millar's writing is appropriately over the top.
Someone posted earlier that this is how Cap should be written, and I couldn't agree more.

You, my friend, should pick up Brubaker's Cap.
Plus Steve Epting has NEVER never looked better. It's like a totally different guy. Frank D. Armata's colors seal the deal.
I'm a closet cap fan and have enjoyed MOST of his incarnations, but as someone who RARELY buys spandex books that I buy that, I think, is a testament to its quality.

I like his helmet. Just makes sense to have a helmet if your going to protect the rest of your body with bullet/fireproof material, gloves, boots, shield, and chainmail.
Also, this last issue kicked serious ass, even if it was more "talky" than usual with no action at all. This series just keeps getting better and better to me.
*SPOILER*
Do you think that from the reaction Fury had in issue two about being "phased out", if maybe he perhaps cut down on the drug he put into the champagne he gave Banner, so that he'd wake up early? Something to think about, even if it is a little stretch.
*End SPOILER*
Also, the ad count in this issue dropped to about half. I did complain to Marvel when I noticed it in previous issues. I wonder how many complaints they've recieved about it, to make them cut back almost half their ads. Now only if they'd start cutting back the ads in the rest of their books.

Am I the only one who thinks Hitch kinda phoned this one in? While the art was still good, it wasn't as half as good as I've seen from him. The writing was great, but the art work was kind of a let down. Any one else agree, disagree?

I disagree with the art. Maybe you just feel that way because there wasn't any action. Not only do I think he did a great job as usual, but I look at all the individual faces, and I can tell what each one is feeling and thinking before I even read it. That's fantastic, imo.
*Spoiler*
I don't think it was Pym, because he says "Oh my god..." as if suprised that Banner survived. I thought Banner was just saying thanks for being his one TRUE friend. Going down and spending time with him. Y'know, since everyone else avoided him as much as possible, including Betty.
Then again, theres that helicopter scene where Pym says "I'm hardly going to screw up my last assignment." *shrugs*
Who knows, maybe it was Loki. Or maybe it wasn't anybody and we're thinking too much.

No, it's not that there's no action. Usually, Hitch can draw a page of a bunch of people reading the news paper and it's awesome. He just didn't do it for me this time.

i LOVED the volume one issues up to number 5-6, then it seemed like millar had to resort to....ALIENS???? to continue the story. that was incredibly lame. furthermore the aliens' hype was about two entire issues and the fight was like half an issue. volume two is showing some great prospects, but i cant stand Millar's writing anymore. its so typical now, nick fury aka samuel jackson, goes from speaking "written english" to gangsta' talk. its really annoying, i would have stopped collecting the comic, but i got a subscription when there were only five issues out. not to mention ive only gotten 9-10 issues in about 2.5 years. bryan hitch's art is awesome, but the story doesnt provoke him to show different sides of the characters or to show them in different surroundings, every comic is so similar.
Let me explain:
city-scape, triskelion, city-scape, hulk's solitary confinement room, city-scape, city-scape, white house, city-scape, group shot, and then a random member of the ultimates in a cool pose.
that about sums it up, i personaly dont find millar's writing to be so genius, there are plenty of equally good or better writers out there. Finally there needs to be some more spice to the upcoming issues.

Ok, so i'm a little behind with the posting.
But i recently got all bar the latest 2/3 issues. And was blown away. The writing creates superb characters. Makes them more real. And as for Bryan Hitch, i don't think anything needs to be said. Just awesome. Shame about them getting rid of thor. Hope they bring him back later on.
I love the fact that in every issue there is always an awesome double spread. There are even some smaller panels, such as the one of Thor, floating there, zapping every single Hero attacking him. =D
Shame about them getting rid of Thor though. Hope they bring him back later on.

I get the feeling when i read this in trade, the end will seem rushed.
I do love the idea of the Liberators. I think it was a brilliant turn to put the shoe on the other foot for once.
At the same time, I do see why an idea like that would be a lightning rod for right-leaning readers, especially given Millar's sentiments in Civil War.

The eight page spread was worth at least 3 of the months it was delayed easily.
And Vol. 3 will be just as late. It has an overworked writer with like 15 other projects and an artist who is even more notorious for missing deadlines. Anyone else remember Joe Mad was the guy who quit drawing comics because he played video games so much?

Laura Martin is damn good. So good, I feel, that she compliments the art with her beautiful colors yet doesn't overpower it, therefore being overlooked often. With an artist like Cassaday, you really notice what she brings to the table. With an artist like Hitch, there's just so much going on with the linework, that you're not really paying attention to the color.
Martin has always been a favorite of mine.
And yeah, the 8-page spread was great, but like vorp said, that book was so late that I bought it for the same reason--to complete the series. Joe Mad has had forever to work on V.3, so it better not be late at all. Regardless, if I do buy it, it will be in trade format, since Marvel is on my hate list right now.

Yeah, the 8 page spread was alright...until you factor in the fact that it averaged out to about an extra month per page we had to wait for this thing. Go, Hitch, you comic diva, you.
I know he's notorious for being late, but I am willing to give Mad another shot - especially, as Pop said, with all the lead-time he's had to work on this. But my patience is at an all-time low, so his margin for error is going to be minimal, at best.

This is why most of my friends quit comics.
This is why I quit comics, even though I drop in my LCS every once in a while to check what's up. Everything that I liked I had to wait for. I'm old school and used to getting a monthly book every month. And if it was bi-monthly, that's the way it was...all the time. It was just too frustrating playing the guess-the-month game with Marvel, Image and DC, so I gave it up. There was no point to having an online subscription with such a sporadic publishing schedule on the part of everyone.
I've decided that if I want to read something, I'll pick it up in trades.
