View Full Version : What is Comics Analysis?

Hi folks, and welcome to the debut of the Comics Analysis forum. We wanted to encourage critical (though courteous and thoughtful) discussion of comics books since, strangely enough, that's what we're all here for anyway ;)

We'll be coming up with some rules systems and some guidelines soon. In the meantime, feel free to post some reviews of books you've read lately. Be sure to fill us in on the publisher, the price, and any other pertinent info.

If you're reviewing a monthly comic, please keep it current - no need to review a two month-old book. Also, please be sensitive about spoiler information - remember some folks may not have read the book by the time you reviewed it.

Consider this forum a work in progress, but expect changes soon. Review away!

This forum sounds great! I'm really happy to see a space that is solely for comics discussion. I'll be hanging out here a lot.

And I'll begin with a question. For reviewing trades, does it have to be recent? I understand why not to review a couple month old single issue, but I think there is value in introducing people to stuff that they may have missed, be it from earlier this year (like the Love Fights trade that came out a couple months ago from Oni) to perhaps something much older (i.e. Animal Man trades).

And thanks for what will hopefully be a haven for actual comics discussion.

No, trades and graphic novels don't need to be recent. We may in fact allow reviews of "classic" issues or some such later. Look for more guidelines soon, and if you have suggestions on how to operate this forum, please post them ASAP so we'll have time to consider and implement them.

I would suggest that we take a little bit of a que from the Millarworld boards, and the way the "important topics" are posted here (http://www.millarworld.net/index.php?showforum=1) with ship lists, a la Benito, a weekly bought/thought thread, etc. I don't know how we'd all feel about piggy-backing off of them, but whatever.

I like that notion.

Terry? What is YOUR opinion?

My opinion? Your froggy avatar is creepy cool.

Oh, you mean about Comics Analysis? Well, I was hoping some other folks would chime in before I dropped my two cents in. It was my understanding that a couple of moderators, for instance, were hot to trot over the idea of a comics review forum, but they're nowhere to be found, it seems .....

I'm hoping that it's just a matter of folks furiously typing out their reviews, though. Anyway, I like the idea of moving Benito's Ship List in here, just haven't had time to approach him about it. I'm sure he'll have opinions as to how this should work, too. Haven't had time to really check out the MillarWorld forums. Anybody care to summarize for me?

Essentially, what they've got going on at the Millarworld boards is a section of important topics as stickies at the top of one of the forums including a ship list for the upcoming new book day (obviously changed weekly), a thread dedicated to monthly solicitations (containing links to online locations for solicitation information for Marvel, DC, Image, Darkhorse, etc. Depending on how far you want to go), and a bought/thought thread for that week's new books.

They also have ship lists for up to two or three weeks in advance, but I doubt we'd really need to go that far.

That's a pretty good option. That would answer the question of how to organize it. I know before there were questions about either having one thread for all X-Men issues or a new thread for each new issue with a review.

This does limit to pretty short reviews though, I don't know how wordy or prolific you were wanting to get.

Maybe it could split out:
Bought/Thought (though it would need a new "lab" title.
Ship List
Full Reviews - For things like entire story arcs or GNs or trades.

Don't mean to stick my "break up the forum" nose in here. I'll hush now.

I like Xadrian's idea, and I don't think it would break up the forum too much. Habing a pinned ship list and pinned bought/thought thread each week would probably work out pretty well.

I'll say that, at the moment, breaking this forum into subsections by publishers, or whatever, isn't on the table. That's not to say that one day we won't choose to do that, but right now I'm more concerned with getting quality reviews than how to break them up, you know?

I checked out the Millarworld thing, and it's not really what I had in mind. I don't necessarily think we need 2,000-word reviews for every comic, but I was hoping for more than anecdotal, one-paragraph reviews as seems to be the norm with their method.

I really wasn't thinking that the WHOLE forum would be limited to the stickies. And the bought/thought thread would really be more like what people put in Benito's ship lists right now after they've bought what they thought they would. I figured it'd be a separate thing to the in-depth reviews that would be hopefully make up the rest of the forum. Then again, maybe just drop the bought/thought thread, because I can see how that may be too much.

But for the stickies, I think having a weekly shiplist sticky and a monthly solicitation sticky would be a'ight.

I'm sorry, I overslept.

Besides, does anyone really want to encourage me to post more? I'm trying to cut back!

:D

I like the idea of the ship list here as well... people might take cues from the reviews when checking the lists and looking for something new to read.

I'm hoping to participate a lot more in the near future, this has just been a really hectic couple weeks and my internet time has taken a big hit. I'm really looking forward to digging in and reviewing soon though. That's my two cents. :)

...huh...wha?!

Oh. Dammit. I overslept, too.

Alright, alright. I'm up. I'M UP! Jeez.

Okey doke. I was one of those "hot to trot" moderators, and since I finally stepped up to the plate, I've been knighted.

I'll be the sumbitch moderatin' this here interweb reviewymajiggy.

So, folks. Let's go. I see that every week you people are spending the money on this garbage, so let's see you talk about it.

And let's try to keep it a bit more than "it's teh sux0rs!" or "meh" or "tenboner explosivo". Actually, that last one is mine, so don't use it.

So, people, let's get crackin'. If you really like a book, this is your chance to sell it. Spread the word.

Yeah, I remember my first few weeks of mod-hood. I was all starry-eyed and full of gumption and promise for the future. The ideas of where I would take the forum spilled out of my head in a flurry of posts and emails.

Then reality set in and I was given a hard knocks lesson from the Man. Life, it seems, has a way of getting in the way of living.

I think this is a great idea. I just posted a little something on the Liquid Fury book in the break room section. If I would have noticed this place first I would have just done an all out review. I don't know what you guys will decide, but i'm sure this is gonna be good.

Sorry, I am a hot new (and besides that: non-native speaker :o ) member, but please help me if you can, I need someone...
The case is that I have to / 'd like to write an essay about comics & literature for my minor (comparative literature), but I haven't found too much secondary literature about the topic. So I need some URL-s or maybe doc-s in Engish, in German or in Hungarian ;) about the theory of
1) the language/texts used in comics, and/or
2) adapting literary works to comics.
I don't know how many time I could spend on this side, so please send e-mail(s)...

I agree with xadrian to an extent however I only see this as a viable and interesting review format if it's allow a reasonable space. I.E short reviews are for short brains.
