I got down to the 6th picture before I had to close the link. Those deep sea creatures always give me the creeps, I always imagine them coming after me or something, even on land.

That third one down actually made me shudder, for real.

Hey, Fig!

I'm not actually signed up on that board (if I am, I sure don't remember signing up). I got this link in an email from a friend. Was so cool, I just had to share. Makes you really wonder what the ocean was like in prehistoric times--and what ELSE is STILL down there!

It's amazing (and kinda freaky) to think that there are still places on the planet unseen by any man. The depths to which the new generation of mini subs can dive is startling to consider, but what's even more interesting is that there are places on the ocean floor that are deeper than anyone can go... yet.

There was alot more teeth in the ocean back then. I watched a show on Prehistoric ocean life and man they were some mean looking fish in there.

What's really a shame is , we know more about space then we do our own oceans and the creatures that inhabit it.
Cool link Bruce.

Good thing people can't make it down there without a huge ton of metal around them.

deep sea fish are some of the most amazing creatures, they have very fascinating adaptations to fit their environment, especially in the way their jaws point up because they're all about catching things that fall to the sea floor, and their bioluminescance that they use to trick predators underneath them by using ultraviolet light to appear invisible.

These fish shouldn't be caught, though. fisherman are dragging the nets on the sensitive sea bottom which we don't even fully understand how deeply it effects the rest of ocean life. Shrimp "fishing" is especially bad, because dragging nets on the sea floor is pretty much the only way they can catch them, then they throw away most of the by-catch (sometimes deep sea fish like the ones you see, that no one wants to eat) and by the time they throw them back to the water the fish are dead. It's a tough situation.

by the way, this is one of my favorits photo archives of bioluminescance and deep sea fish:

I might've posted this before. (http://www.hboi.edu/gallery/photoarchive/bio_gallery_1.html)

edit:
my favorite! It looks like a ghostly old man... (http://www.hboi.edu/gallery/photoarchive/display/2876-18.jpg)
and this one... is this real!? (http://www.hboi.edu/gallery/photoarchive/display/3918-27.jpg)
and you gotta love those fish with two jaws and their very own skewer... (http://www.hboi.edu/gallery/photoarchive/display/malaco~1.jpg)

I did a painting of a Deep Sea Angler Fish a few years ago that's hanging in my living room.

OH MY GOD!!! I love deep sea fish! Amy bought the Blue Planet DVD collection at a con last year, and we watch the deep sea episode that night. It was totally awesome!

I was at the Baltimore Aquarium last week, and I saw a Cowfish for the first time. It's crazy looking.

I wish I could see angler fish in real life. :(

When I was in Madeira I had something that looked very much like the first fish. It was GOOOOD. It's good deep sea fishing there and these black big eyed fish were in all the grocery stores and restaurants as well as some sort of parrot fish. Not as tasty.
BBC has made some fantastic under water series about the ocean with one chapter about deep sea life. It was amazing to watch. The different squids, sharks, crabs, fish and everything. The sad thing is that you can't bring them in alive unles you're fitted with a deep sea sub. The deep seas are probably the final frontier.
