So I've gotten this far.. she's been through the blender quite a few times, and I'm satisfied that the lineart has gotten to where it's going to be..

my only problem is... being very new to coloring (of any sort, not just cg), I haven't the slightest idea how to give her a little texture. everything is looking a little too smooth..
I'd like to make her gear look a little dirty and scratched up, but I haven't the slightest idea where to start.

any ideas?

not gonna lie. You have a long way to go. However, I was in the same boat as you when I first started out. First you choose your flat colors (make sure you separate each color per layer). Then when you have your flats, grab the burn tool and go to town with the shadows. When those are done, grab the dodge tool and go to town with the highlights....but don't go to town as much as you did with the shadows (unless that's the look you are going for). You just need more depth in your shading. Hope this helps you.
