Michael Caine (pictures) has agreed to play the role of Bruce Wayne's trusted butler Alfred in the Warner Bros.' new Batman adaptation for which Christian Bale has been cast in the title role.

The film, to be helmed by Christopher Nolan and being written by David Goyer, is expected to start shooting next year for a 2005 release.

Meanwhile, Caine is also expected to star in Castle Rock's sequel to the Sandra Bullock romantic comedy "Miss Congeniality."

That's awesome. Anyone who thinks that's not awesome...kick yourself in the nuts for me...I just don't have the energy tonight.

I wouldn't say that I think that is awesome. I'm not complaining mind you, but I thought that Michael Gough was great as Alfred in other Batman movies. Though he hasn't been in anything since Sleepy Hollow in 1999, so perhaps he's retired. I've always been curious as to whether Efrem Zimbalist Jr would actually make a good Alfred. He does the animated voice and was Babylon 5 villian William Edgars. I've always thought that his body type was wrong, but he's about the same build as Michael Caine, so there goes that arguement.

Final analysis: I think I'd have to downgrade "That's awesome," to a "That's cool." I'm sure Michael Caine will be great in the role, but the little geek voice in the back of my mind would have loved to see the animated Alfred come to life.

And I have no intention of kicking myself in the balls. I'm no where near that limber and would probably only succeed in throwing out my back in an awkardly failed attempt. :)

i looked him up on www.imdb.com out of curiousity . there were a couple films after that, but nothing really big budget i guess.

His first movie was Blanche Fury in 1947! i think the dudes earned a rest.

Me... I'm super lazy. I probably would have stopped working a decade or two ago if I were him. :D

1947 through 1999... that's a hell of a career in film.

yeah, and probably a let down if everyone knows you for being George Clooney's lackey, poor guy, he should have ended it there!

Micheal Caine kicks ass

That's pretty cool but didn't Alfred die in the last installment? That's okay. It's not that hard to ignore and forget Batman and Robin.

I also like Christian Bale as Bruce more. All Bale really needs to do is tweak his role of Patrick Bateman into Bruce Wayne.

Nah, Alfred didn't die. He came close but fortunately Mr. Freeze had something save him or something.

Interesting... I always thought of Cain as more of a leading man type (like in the original Italian Job), I wonder how well he'll play as a sidekick/servant/background character.

He's definitely got more charisma than I should think Alfred needs.

That's what I keep thinking. You may have a case where Alfred steals the show from Bruce.

This new Batman film does not relate to the previous four entries. They're starting fresh.

Christian Bale is signed as Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred. Christopher Nolan is directing. On the rumored side of things, Daniel Day-Lewis is apparently who they're trying to get for R'as al Ghul.

Supposedly this film begins with Batman thwarting Scarecrow from harming Gotham City and it leads into Batman leaving Gotham to track down R'as for some reason or other. I'm glad they'll be using such cool villains. Supposedly Scarecrow is there to show how dark this film will be and set the tone early on.

Caine is great... but a butler? Maybe he should be Gordon.

Nah... Caine is VERY British, and Gordon is not. I'm sure Caine could tone it down, but then why would you hire him?

It kinda makes more sense when you think of Alfred as someone who raised Bruce and assisted him in becoming this super-martial artist/detective/acrobat/gymnast/scientist/criminologist that he is... the idea that Alfred is posessed of many untapped skills from his years makes him more interesting as a character, and makes someone like Michael Caine more a of a sensible casting choice. You can easily believe that while Caine is playing the part of a butler, he's also capable of defending Wayne Manor single-handledly and is prepared to handle whatever may come while acting as the assistant to a borderline psychotic crimefighting vigilante.

I was thinking about how cool he would be in the bat-costume, as Alfred had donned a few times. I can see him kicking some ass, at least for a few minutes. ;)

Actually, I had a dream that I saw a new Batman movie about 2 weeks ago, I think. Was really wierd, in that I was in some kind of gigantic theatre, reminiscient of those early 20th century playhouse theatres, but big enough to hold maybe 50,000 people. All I remember is that the new Batman was supposed to be sweet, and played up the grim and gritty of the Batman mythos.

The bad part of the dream, is that I never got to see the movie, as it was some kind of nightmare, where everybody was able to see the movie, but me.

Well, I should have said that I heard all about how cool the movie was in the dream, but only saw maybe 3 seconds of it, before the nightmare ensued. ;)

bah, Caine did a Southern voice in that one movie that came out recently that's no problem. If Alfred plays more of a major role in the movie I'd be for it.... but dammit Caine's to great an actor to be used as a simple one or two line actor in a movie. But anyhow this one looks to be shaping up.

Caine just said in an interview that Nolan is working on getting Viggo Mortensen as the main villain (I assume he means Ghul). Could be good.
