I sent this in some time ago and got notice before the con that I hadn't made the cut. At the con though I found out that I managed to get past the first couple of levels, so that made me happier.

The reason being that these were the first finished works I've managed. Most of the time I rework and rework an idea to death. So I felt really good about these.

For those that don't know, they ask for three to four plots and one 5-page script. I gave them three plots and a script. I tried to make one feed into another, but I think it didn't work like I had hoped and probably didn't help me much.

I figured there was no reason to hide them, so here they are...

Part 2...

REMNANTS
FINAL DRAFT
BY: BEN CHRISTENSEN

Stacy stands motionless as the beast impales her husband, the creature’s arm holding its victim’s body upright. Stacy knows what is about to happen, she know’s it all too well.

“I love you” Brent says as his last glimmer of life fades away. The fiend removes its limb. Brent’s lifeless frame falls to the ground. The beast, a monster made of green tentacles and dark red skin, lifts back it’s massive head and lets out an ear shattering scream of victory.

Stacy just watches, obsessively staring at the forty foot tall creature. She hates it. She hates it so much that even this holographic recording of it makes her blood boil. Tapping a control on her gauntlet computer, the image disappears, replaced by a blue glowing sphere hovering in the air. Stacy grabs the ball, the last image of her husband, and vows on his memory that she will not fail. She activates another command and a yellow sphere pops out of her gauntlet. A bright light is automatically generated from the ball, encompassing the space around Stacy, replacing it with a rooftop overlooking a massive cityscape.

Buildings tower everywhere, interconnecting between themselves to form a honeycomb of glass and composite steel. For Stacy though, the architecture isn’t what catches her eye. To her left, two sphere-users battle a hyrdosaur. Behind them, a five hundred foot Neg-Beast sprays energy on a human opponent. On the roof next door, a Bone Soldier takes a blast from a hunter’s green sphere. Massive television screens on the taller buildings display a number of other battles.

Some people view these conflicts as entertainment, but Stacy knows better. She takes no joy in what she’s trying to do. Her gauntlet beeps, popping a blue sphere from its storage system. The ball opens to display the fiend she’s hunting, engrossed in combat with a single opponent. Purple energy harnesses surround the creature as it fights. Stacy returns the sphere to her system and pops a yellow one, instantly teleporting her to the battle.

The sphere-user, an older man, has attached multiple harness spheres to the beast in an attempt to make it easier to kill. Even with the restraints diminishing its strength, the powerful creature continues to attack. Stacy moves quickly, she runs a program through her gauntlet, emitting a rainbow of color towards the beast. The harnesses disappear as all of the spheres inside the creature fly out and fall to the ground, blackened into useless trinkets. The old man is furious, he tries to argue with her about the illogical maneuver, but Stacy catapults a yellow sphere at him, teleporting the poor man away. She has no time to argue.

The fiend attacks Stacy, as she leaps out of the way she curses the need for the sphere removal, but this has to be done just right. She dodges another strike and runs a pre-programed sphere sequence. Rare multi-colored spheres pop out of her gauntlet, embedding themselves within the creature. Though no one sphere seems to have any effect, Stacy prays that this works the way she was told.

People begin to congregate around her battle, curious as to what she is doing. Video screens display her image and a list of the spheres she’s used. The crowd cheers her on, waiting anxiously for the outcome to Stacy’s actions.

The last ball, a green-blue hybrid, plants itself in the fiend. The creature pauses, its body starting to emit beams of white light. It screams in pain, its body twisted and contorted from the pressure inside as it builds. Stacy ducks as the beast explodes. For a moment everything is still, shocked faces line the crowd. The dust and smoke begin to settle.

Floating where the fiend once stood is a glowing white sphere, an object so rare it was thought only legend. Stacy stands, walking over to it she touches the shimmering surface. In that instant she can see her husband in her mind and hear his voice. A tear runs down her face as she smiles, it worked. While she looks into the sphere in awe, a number of people from the crowd come forward. One of them challenges Stacy for the rare sphere. Those behind him yell similar statements. Stacy grabs the sphere and locks it inside her gauntlet.

“You’ll have to take it” she says, without looking at the challengers.

“If that’s how it has to be” one of them shouts. Stacy is surrounded by the upstart sphere-users, each with a ball at the ready. She stands somber in the center. This won’t be easy, but she’d die before loosing this sphere. What her life once was, driven only by loss and revenge, is over. Now she has to protect the rewards of her efforts.
