Hi, BritaNickLA, and welcome to Penciljack.com. Unfortunately, we only allow art posts in the Studio forums. All other discussion topics go elsewhere. Since this was about techniques, I moved it to Tips & Techniques for you.

Now that you're in my forum, YOU ARE UNDER MY CONTROL!! BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HAAA!!!!
Nah, I play. But I will say that in my experience there are two things to keep in mind. Berol makes a bitchin' pencil in the Prismacolor brand, and try to practice keeping your strokes controlled and soft to start with. You don't need to press down too hard to get good tone, and you don't want to embed the paper with clay. Practice as well how different colors mix together, and maybe try using a brown, un-bleached paper and working with highlights as well as shadow from the midtones of the paper. Experiment with different paper tooths as well (tooth being the finish texture, either rough or smooth... I'd go with a smooth, myself).
