ok, so I want to upgrade the video card in my computer. here's the specs

1.8GHZ P4
512MB DDR memory
current video card is a GeForce 3 Ti 200

the price range i'm wanting to spend is between $100 and $150 (give or take a few bucks). here are the cards I'm looking at

GeForce FX 5600 256MB
GeForce TI 4800
and the Radeo 9600 Pro 256MB

So give me your personal opinion or tell me where to look for good comparisons!

thanks

the geforce FX will run you way more than $150 more like $300+
i have the geforce ti 4600 and it works great it cost around $200 as for the radeon 9600 thats around the same price as the FX but they basically do the same stuff. i've used both radeon and geforce and never really can tell the difference but price wise the 4600 or 4800 geforce is a good deal.
heres a link for recommended cards http://www.techtv.com/products/hardware/jump/0,23009,3340311,00.html looks like radeon would be a good card since you have a pretty fast computer.

Max clock speeds. Memory Bandwidths. Verticies/ second. Compare compare compare.

Out of the three, I recommend the Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB, mostly because this is the one I am currently using. $200

The GeForce FX series is a really solid vid card but has a tendency to have complications with some OS (particularly Microsoft XP). I used to have the GX 5200. It caused me a lot of grief downloading additional drivers over and over again to continuously fix problems. 5600 $200, 5200 $100

The TI series is now considered the old generation vid cards. New technology is usually better technology.

I'm pretty happy with my Radeon 9800 pro 128 :D

But seriously, what are you gonna be using it for? Games? Cause if that's the case, wait till september or october and try to pick up a geforce mx 5600 or whatever they're on, or a radeon 9700, 9800. You can at least get 2 more years out of those cards from the time you buy them. Those other ones, will give you a year tops.

Especially with games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2 needing at least radeon 9700's to run properly.

Small tip unless your screen resolution is higher than 1600x1200 don't bother with a card above 128mb.

Geforce4 ti4800. It's the top of the line Geforce4 which kicks the ass of the middle of the performance spectrum GeforceFX 5600...and don't bother with a Radeon lower than a 9800. The driver problems just aren't worth it.

hmmm hadn't looked at that one yet methane. interesting.

can't seem to find any reviews or comparisons of it online. any idea how it stacks up against the Radeon 9800 Pro 128 (which seems to be the one I'm leading towards if I can find it for less than $200)

Radeon 9800 will kick most of their asses...but I doubt you'll find one for under 200 bucks.

i know, i've been bidding on ebay all day long, so far I've got one at $135 with 2 days to go, so I'm sure it'll jump in price...

If it's only for games, then just get an Xbox.

Any Microsoft haters in tha house?

yeah, it's mostly for games. And I'd rather saw off my testicles with a butter-knife that buy an X-Box.

and it's got nothing to do with Microsoft.
