PJ Project #4

Ok so officially Benito's jam wasn't a PJ Project when it started, and the other two currently aren't finished yet, but since we have this forum now and a lot of people are wishing they'd "got in" on something, let's just open it up. I can organize this one, but probably can't contribute to the creative end. Another reason for having more of these is that as we do them, we can shape this forum through trial and error and eventually get a well oiled machine capable of cranking out projects in no time.

With that in mind, let's see about some ground rules. These are flexible and are only in place to help the project, not hurt the artists. If they work, we'll use them again, if not we'll ditch them and try something else.

For this go around, brand new thread, new project, forget that other projects are running.

Item 1 - Script. This seems to be the thing that we get the fastest so I'm not worried about it, but just keeping with the structure, either a story with established characters from the Known Universes or something everyone involved can agree on. If it's going to be completely made up, we'll have to make sure everyone is on board and that the project stays at Penciljack. Something like characters we've already created or embodiments of our online personas. Needless to say it's probably easier if we just pick known characters and make up a story. 8-10 pages is best.

Item 2 - Participation. I won't preach about this, but let's cut to the chase. If in the near future you think you may be moving, going back to school or unable to access the internet, don't sign up. I don't want to alienate, but I also don't want to be finishing this just in time for the 3rd Lord of the Rings movie either. If you sign up, remember that people are counting AND waiting on you, so pull through. It's totally understandable if you have paying gigs or emergencies and the like, so don't think we'll ostracize you.

Item 3 - Deadlines. Which brings us to when it's due. In the frictionless theoretical vacuum of The Ideal, each section of the project should be done in one week. Even a semi pro can do a page in a day, one week is gracious. If we were to stick to this, the jam could be done in a month. If you don't think you can contribute by getting it done, don't do it. The downside of this is, if you want to color, but the inks aren't done for two weeks, it's hard to tell what happens in two weeks, so keep that in mind. If you see yourself with an open schedule, and you can get the job done in about a day or two, by all means put your name in.

Item 4 - Alternates. We will always get more people that want to pencil and color than ink or letter. Also a lot of people will want to pencil and ink their own stuff. So, on a first come first server basis, pages will be handed out. If you miss out but still want in, we can do alternate pages or have an alternates list in case someone backs out. I'd like to start getting alternate pages going immediately because in case someone bails, we don't have to wait for someone else to pencil or ink or whatever. It makes sense to have a finished project on standby rather than conscript another artist from scratch.

Item 5 - Communication. Until there are sub forums, these things tend to become monsters and hard to follow. Whoever organizes it should be sure to mention that PMs and emails are probably the best way to go when communicating. That leaves the thread clean for things like updates. This way, group members can feel secure in knowing that they can check the thread just to see where we are rather than find out someone's been tyring to find them. Can't find someone? PM them. Want to let me know the page is done? PM or email me the link to it. Even if you don't have an image host, you can email me the page and I'll host it for the length of the jam.

I think that's about it. The previous notes may be turned into a sticky note, but I think they needed saying. With that out out of the way. Who's up for our 4th Project?

Challengers of the Unknown: Elseworld

The concept: Aftershocks have rippled across the
multiverse since the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Assembled by the mysterious Hourman, the Challengers
move Elseworld to Elseworld correcting damaged
timelines.

The Challengers:

Batman-- On his world, Dick Grayson ruled the nights
of Gotham fueled by Venom serum and baths in the Ghul
pits. Ruthless and calculating, Grayson has enhanced
strength and agility.

Wonder Woman-- On her world Diana is the last
surviving Amazon. With the gloves of Ares, and the
chain of revelation, Diana fights for the ideals of
her forgotten culture.

Deathstroke-- On his world where every metahuman gene
induces insanity, Slade Wilson hunts "heroes."
A walking arsenal, Deathstroke has enhanced reflexes
and uncanny aim.

Lantern-- On his world Sinestro is a legend of the Red
Lantern Corps. With his power ring, Sinestro's power
is limited only by his imagination and strength of
will.

The Target:

General Zod: The Superman of his world, Zod rules.

I checked out this forum a while after it started, and I wasn't too sure what was going on. Are you making a creative team to work on a comic or something? I read the rules and stuff, and it seems pretty cool. I can imagine you've got tons of people wanting to pencil the project, so if you have room, I'd like to maybe do some inking. I don't have any samples at the moment, since my scanner's busted, but I sent some inked pages to EddieChingLives a while ago for a comic we're doing, and he may get them scanned soon, so if you wanna see some of my pencils or inks, I guess see if he can send them to you.

-motorpsycho- - I'm not either, I'll try to dig up some reference material. If not, we may have to do a character sheet before starting of pencils. It looks like Kimo gave us a passing description of the players, but I'll see what I can do.

UniverseX259 - It's not a comic that we're getting published, it's what's known as an Art Jam. Known characters, everyone gets a page or two, pencils, inks whatever they can, made up story. It's just to flex our artistic and story telling muscles. You're welcome to join if you can make the committment and inkers are ALWAYS welcome. Let me know if you'd like a certain page.

I'd love to do something on it. I just haven't looked through the forum to see what pages are available. If you have anything available, I'd gladly do them. I can work fast, too. I've pencilled 4 pages in a day and I can easily ink about 3 pages in a day if I set my mind to it. I've only really inked my own pencils, though, so it may take a little while to understand the penciller's art, but I'd be glad to work on this.

Ok, we're going to need character sheets. There've been a few ideas regarding how to do this, so I'll leave this up to you guys.

1) It's Kimo's script and he's got an idea of the characters. It'd be real quick to get some reference pics from him. Not exciting, but fast.

2) We can have just whoever does a page make up what they think the character should be. Fast, but no continuity.

3) We can post a bunch of pics here and decide on which is good and what we'll go with. Take a little longer, but better continuity.

4) Final suggestion would be to have a Draw Off and a vote for each character in the Arena. Long time, but more exciting.

2) Figure out how many characters there are and give each person doing a page a character. That way everyone has input and we don't have to wait for multiple versions or draw offs. Being an Elseworlds tale they should be recognizable, but definitely altered. We go by Kimo's description and for further explanation, contact him directly.

3) You, (Xadrian) as the organizer, decides whether everyone chooses or if you'll assign characters to artists.

No one's signed up for the cover, but that's still open. Thus far the projects have had them. I'll edit the updates from now one to include them.

I'll put on the official editor hat and have the characters run through me first, make sure they're recognizeable and easy to pick up for the full pages.

How about this. Along with the pages, we also have character designers. You can do both if you want. I want multiple input, so the first five people to reply to this post can pick a character to design. We'll post them upon completion and use them as continuity.

Along with Kimo's description they'll get credit for the design.

I read part of the script, and it looks really awesome. I guess since it's an alternate DC universe thing, the characters will be slightly different than in the regular DCU.

Which brings me to my next point of discussion. I came up with a design for a new Batman costume a little while ago, which is kinda like armor mixed with his regular uniform. I can try scanning a pic and sending it to you, Xadrian, sometime soon. I can't tell for sure, since my scanner's broken, maybe either over the weekend or next week at a friend's house.

Also, I'd like to do pencils, but I don't have to if others want to pencil. I'd be just as happy to do inks for whatever page you'd need. But if you need me to choose pages to ink or pencil, I'd like to do either the cover, page 1, or both, or whatever pages need inking. And I think I just repeated myself a whole bunch.

Well, I'm still working on the TMNT cover, but I'd like to get in on this. Its a great script. I don't really want to jump in on anybody's space so I'll just leave the open pages... well, open for others to get a chance at them. But I'd love to sign on as an alternate for page 7 pencils if its ok.

I'll take Wonder Woman (Can you say Nubia? Diana's SISTAH?)

Zod should be pretty simple. My idea was making him look like Superman after he came back from the dead, flat black with silver armbands and belt. Zod's v neck would replace the 'S' shield, of course he would have a beard and widow's peaks (well dang, that's it in a nutshell, should I STILL Draw one? Do I haveta?)

Remember whoever does Sinestro the RED lantern has to do two. Him dressed regularly and the armor plus weapon he uses to attack Zod.

I REALLY want to see Grayson as Batman on Venom and Deathstroke as a walking arsenal.

I like A.D.R.I.A.N 's Zod. I know he's not done but it looks great so far.

Hangman's Batman looks better with the blue color treatment. I'm not sure about the mouthpiece. It kind of makes him look like an android or "Batbot".

A.D.R.I.A.N seems to have updated his pic. I think the original was better. It was simple -- just like (I would imagine) Zod should look.

The biggest problem I see with Hangman's Batman is the mask. Kimo has Bats grinning in one panel so the mouth shouldn't be covered.
The only other problem is that Batman looks a bit futuristic.

also the batman no offence dosen't feel batman i feel like both zod and batman are brooding characters. i feel zod is brooding form page two, it felt so dark, i love it

I'm still working on the Zod design... I'm just showing some progression. I want the whole suit to be black, but I'm trying to see whether or not to have the flair out nazi-like pants with boots or keep it skintight. I'll work up both and see what happens. :D

I got permission from the writer to change Wonder Woman to Nubia instead of Diana. Nubia is Diana's twin sister who was kidnapped and raised by Ares, god of War, during their childhood.

Being that he had her wearing Ares' gauntlets and it was an Elseworlds tale I opted for this design.

The helmet is just there for sake of completion, not necessarily to be used. I didn't draw the chain of revelation (an Elseworlds equivalent of the lasso of truth). The chain is linked similar to a rope necklace and is from a pencil to about a Sharpie in diameter.

I had this redesigned Batman from a previous draw-off and wanted to know if you guys thought it was usable. Its more of a sleek, efficient type design, which I think "suits" Bats perfect.

Wolfprime: Your design for Wonder Woman is fantastic.

Spidey: I really like your Batman concept.I guess I'm one that definately likes the more tradtional Batman ear treament but everything else is very cool. Maybe connect the middle portion of the belt somehow?

I wouldn't mind throwing in on this one too, but since I'm not sure how busy I'll be just put me down for lettering a few pages. Don't care which ones or how many really, letterin' goes fairly quickly.

I really like the Zod and wonderwoman here. Great Stuff.

Bat's is cool too, I think I just prefer a more utilitarian approach for the character. Also, if he's hyped up on Venom, shouldn't he be ripped like Bane?

Spidey - I LOVE the lantern designs. My favorite is number five. Are you going to do a full version of Sinestro? I have an idea for his normal suit before he armors up.

I like ALL the Batman designs. Adrian's and Spidey's look very similar save the actual bat ears. I think the bat should be blue though to keep him from being too Batman Beyond. Plus the blue would be like a throwback to Dick's Nightwing design. Like on BB you can show emotion through the mask. I think he should have a few clunky elements though since he's using Apokalips technology.

Alright, here are my crudely done designs for Batman. I did these on MS Paint, and I swear I can do better when I actually draw them. There are a lack of muscles, since I wanted to show what the costume would look like, but since it's Batman on venom, all you artists out there should draw big-ass muscles there. Also, i did them in 2 different colors, so choose which color you like best.

This might be a dumb question but here it goes; Where would i get a page scanned the size of the Blueline pro paper and say i did the cover how would I get to you or anyone for that matter. my scanner is only 8.5 x 11. I tried scanning both halfs individualy than connecting them, but it look tacky. Any answers?

canaan - Unless you get an oversized scanner (http://www.bigscanners.com) you'll have to do some stiching on the one you have. Kinko's should have the ability to do that and save it for you, probably upload it to a site as well.

As far as the cover goes, I'd like to see if Uni is still up for it first.

Am I to understand that they are on an island (arena?) formed by the top half of the Daily Planet globe? Is the globe still on the top of the building or has it fallen off? From a design point of view, I think it would look better if the globe is half covered on a flooded street.

Yeah, Xadrian, I'd love to do the cover, but if I can't find a scanner soon, I'll let someone else do it. I just called up the biggest friggin' library around to see if they had a scanner, and they didn't, so I got some tips from some PJ members on how to fix my scanner. If these tips don't work, I guess I'll have to forfeit the cover, since I don't wanna slow you guys down.

Universe, are you urban or rural? If you're urban, look for an internet cafe. I've only found one good copying place, ever, in terms of scanning (all the others are stupidly expensive) but it's worth a shot. If you're rural... I dunno... rub a chicken on it and say a prayer. I hated small town living.

I'd like to do some sketches (set designs, if you will) for the scenes on the ball of the Daily planet globe, just for continuity's sake. Is this cool with everyone?

It would be great if, once the basics are decided on, the sketches + other info were all collected together in a single post for easy reference. I'm scrolling through the posts now and I have no idea which Batman is the keeper and some people's sketches just look like a big, red screen shot of a web page to me.

okay there is one problem, my character don't match any of the designs. i wanted to see if i could pull off a page, on a lighter side the first to panels are some of my best works ever. so i think you guys migwht enjoy this, by the way just to let you know i am doing it on an 8 by 11 sheet of paper :D. also i am going to ink it. colors some1 else can do! neways even though none of the characters match your designs i still post just incase some1 else does the page and wants ideas for the panels.

i put it the scene in a battle scared metrolpolis and try to make every panel as detalied as possible so most likely my efforts will not make it in the final project

This is just my opinion, but I'd go for the lifeless look. It'd make sense, because it'd work as a window into his soul or something. Plus, no one would really be able to see it up there, so what would be the point?

how close r we to a Batman design? Seems like that's the one we're not completely sure on.......i was wondering....is Batman going to be looking huge? or is he gonna be Dick with bigger muscles.....seems to me like shouldn't be all that pumped up since it would make the knuckles he uses on Zod less important...plus Bats is more exciting when he's going up against these super beings and hes just a human.....i guess it's up to the writer....just my 2 cents

Well, there is some discrepancy on Deathstroke. Hangman's is sufficient, but I think some elements could be reworked. He comes off a LOT like the Taskmaster for some reason. What's the color scheme Hangman? Someone already suggested using the Dave Johnson redesign.

Batman (and Zod?) are undecided and there are four Sinestro's to choose from (pick ME!).

for my Deathstroke I was going to go with the same color scheme as the current DC Deathstroke(sorry....its the only one I know and a classic) If u want ill do a quick coloring job and I'll post it tonight.....

as for my Batman.....I really dont like it....plus someone did mention that we r supposed to b able to see his mouth in at least one panel....which we cant with my design.....i say either get a finished drawing from Universe or go with Adrians.....Adrians is my fav so far since its hard to tell what universe's will look like

Yeah, I'll try and get to scanning the Batman pics soon. I'll have to modify it a bit, though. I did this sketch months ago, and thought it would be nice to have it in the jam. His mouth does show, and there's the classic design while some new elements are incorporated, but I have to draw bigger muscles, since he'll be on Venom.

Great job on the cover canaan, remember though Zod has a full, admittedly thin, beard. You only gave him a goatee.

I like the cover layout, but it seems disjointed. Batman doesn't seem like part of the team. If he were operating covertly behind the scenes it would fit better. Considering the threat I think the cover should reflect a united front. A combination of your and Adrian's layouts would be great. Adrian had tension with the looming Zod face and GREAT balance between the heroes on the left and zod on the right. Your cover features the characters a bit more prominently.

Any comments on the layout for page nine? A little feedback/editorial guidance X?

I was telling A to the D that unused covers are basically pin-ups.
That would be a way someone who is uncomfortable doing sequentials can do a single image and still be part of the project.

All the cover ideas so far have been cool. I really like the logo that was created for the cover. And after reviewing A.D.R.I.A.N's finished Zod, I think we got solid character designs for all of them. I don't know which Batman we are using yet.

Nice covers, but like Hangman said, it doesn't scream iconic or one shot, special . . . Your first design was the best so far. The team should be the dominating image on the cover. It's not Zod Tales, it's Challengers of the Unknown. They should be the biggest thing on their book right? Batman, being the leader, should be featured pretty prominently amongst the team. Remember to leave room at the top for the logo too.

I would need a few points cleared up for me (is it just pencils or pencils and inks? what are the size limitations? what are we going to do with the work when we are done?) but overall I think the project is very cool. The Red Lantern, I think it could mix a chest design of Spidey's C choice, with boots and gauntlets from Wolf prime's (personal taste. heh).

I really liked your 'C' design for Sinestro, but I just dug Kyles gloves and boots. I thought they gave an impression right away of ______ Lantern. Sinestro looks like a final from where I'm sitting.

The Cobra Commander mask on Deathstroke . . . okay, I'll say it. I HATE it! The mask works on snake face, but that requires substantial suspension of disbelief. As a matter of fact he's the ONLY person who can rock that mask! If the Deathstroke design IS final at least make it his classic mask. . . with goggles. The vest is a nice touch but I think it should be either closed or a slip over like a bullet proof vest. That way he doesn't bite it when Zod riddles him with bullets.

Hey thanks! Oh wait, you meant the drawing. Well I guess Sinestro is finalized(if there is no objections) along with Zod and Wonder Woman. Batman I feel is still a lil iffy. I like Adrian's and Giga's. I know what you mean about the Deathstroke though. I'm not too down with it either. In fact I was working on a design based on Johnson's redesign, but I guess Xady wants to keep it Hangmanned.

Xadrian said there's still time left to post pics for character designs. I finally got my scanner working, and I have a sketch for Batman. Tell me if it doesn't show up to well. I found it somewhat hard to see. Basically it's like my horrible MS Paint designs, except better. It's a take on the classic Batman design, except he has armor on his chest, forearms (Not pictured) and shins (Also not pictured). He also has a tube of Venom which comes out from the back of his head and goes into a plug in his back. If you want to see another pic, I'll scan one. Hopefully it'll turn out better.

I Like Giga Bats, but his Zod and A.R.I.A.N.'s Zod, aren't they the same? Either one will do. I personally like Hangman's Deathstroke. Maybe it's because I don't know to much about him, but I'm diggin the mask. It has that Griffter apeal. Absolutly WP's Wonder Woman--that can't be touched. I like WP's Lantern better. Can i sketch a Bat's design, if it's still open? if not than...oh well.

I have just joined the project here, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents on some of the designs:

Zod:
I prefer Adrian's design. I think it is simple, elegant and will be consistent even with a wide variety of artists using it. I think the creative part is how an artist handles his hair, his facial expressions-things like that.

WW:
I guess Wolfprime's is the design. Nothing personal, I would like to see maybe 1 other option. I say that because it is rare that the first try is always the best. Maybe Wolf could do another himself for comparison

Red Lantern:
I like Giga's. I think that they all have similarities, and are all solid, but I never liked the Kayle Rayner costume so I'd rather see one closer to the Justice League John Stewart then the old Kyle style.

Batman:
Giga again. It builds upon the other ideas of Adrian and others-it has a great mix of Batman Beyone, Bane and Nightwing. I think he has hit gold.

Deathstroke:
Like WW, I would like to see another option besides Hangman's. I know there have been a few, but they seemed like incomplete sketches. Again, Hangman's is good, but I would like to see another solid option, maybe even from him or comparison.

Now, I am more then happy to go with the majority here. Seeing as how my page only features 3 characters, I don't have as big a stake in Deathstroke or Lantern, but I wanted to throw my opinions out there.

And For deathstroke I'm just gonna go ahead and use my own (sorry hangman), but I'm still gonna use the vest, but bulletproof vest style like WP mentioned. I'll post up model sheets of each design before I work on the page incase there is any major objections. I can't wait for you people to make up your minds. I'm gonna finish the TMNT cover tonight and post the model sheets in the morning hopefully.

Ok, bats is decided on. My version wasn't all too different except for a few adjustments.
But atleast let me show you my final lantern and Deathstroke designs. I think RL is the best yet even though he looks a bit like Invicible. I got it where his symbol is actually red instead of black or white. And I only redesigned DeathStroke cuz a number of people were dissatisfied with the current design.
Anyway, I'll post them up before noon.

Pencils have been assigned and everyone has the script now. If you've got any script questions, now's the time to ask. We're moving forward now with the actual book. I'm going to give everyone a week for pencils. That means this time next week we need 10 pages of pencils done and one cover penciled. In the original post I epxpressed a desire to have each dutie last one week. With the character designs going on for a while now, I think we should be able to get this cranked out in short order.

So...

-Pencils are due one week from today. We'll say by Wednesday midnight. So thursday morning we'll move on to inking.

-If you are inking your own pencils, you have 2 weeks, one for pencils, one for inks. If you are an inker, waiting for pencils, you have one week from the time you get the pencils. If you get them early on Monday, you have until that Monday to get them done.

-Since all the positions haven't been filled, we might have staggered results, but always keep this in mind. The deadline is a week from when you get the project.

-I'll be keeping track of who got what when. If you are PMing people, please also notify me. If my PM box is full (which it is sometimes) you can always email me.

-If for whatever reason you can't come through on the deadline, your page will be bumped to Alternate status and the slot will be opened. It may extend the actual finish of the project, but consider it a penalty for not meeting your deadline.

-If you think you can't get a page done in a week, tell me know and I'll take you off the list.

-You don't have to send me your page when it's done, I'm only going to store the final colored and lettered pages for viewing later, but when you're done, let me know.

I like the second one, more dramatic. The first one you're clipping Zod's nose and it looks odd.

C02, I like the first sketch better. It's more linear, and would look better as a comic after all the letters and such are put in, in my opinion. The second sketch looks more like it would be a pin-up, but it may also be cool for a cover.

Xadrian I wanted to know one thing before I started penciling. When Zod is getting hit by either Bats or Deathstroke what kind of expression do we show him with? Pain, frustration, annoyance, delight?

Are these hits actually hurting him or just provoking him?

I'd say that's pain in both instances. You could actually ADD a panel of Zod reeling/clutching his side when he asks if he's already killed Batman.

I'll go ahead and ink my own page. I got this graphics tablet recently and am kinda cyked about trying it out on a page from thumbs to "pixi-pencils" to "digi-inks".

So that's one less inker we'll need for the project.

About inkers, I don't want to take away from the rest of the forums just to drive traffic here, BUT I don't see a problem with PMing people you know are decent inkers AND reliable and asking them to come check us out.

Oh yeah, I'm gonna be inking my own page. I have a really hard time coming up with tight pencils for another to ink.

I figure I'm in the same boat, but for a different reason. No one's going to be beating down any doors or stepping on each other's backs to ink anything I do. I'm assuming the same goes for colors as well. I'll be tackling my page myself out of necessity, not desire.
