Alright, all. This is a section of a Kamandi script I would love to have published one day. Kamandi (as he was created and invisioned by Jack Kirby for 36 some issues) is one of my favorite books. Kamandi is a young man who finds himself in a post apocolyptic world where man has become little more than animals, most even unable of speak. Animals have evolved to stand on two legs, use there hands, and speak. Kamandi himself is one of the only survivors of the world of man. The Tiger and Gorilla empires are bitter enemies. This story, and the whole it is a part of, takes place 2 or so years after the period of Kirby's run on the book, and ignores all of the events that were created post-Kirby (the creators that followed slaughtered a beautiful concept).
Kamandi: Fun With Ugash
PAGE 1
PANEL 1: Close up of several dead men. Focus on their faces. Their eyes are open but obviously lifeless. A few flies are on them. Not too gross, but they should definitely be dead.
CAPTION (GENERAL UGASH): THIS IS THE FACE OF YOUR ENEMY, MY SON. THIS IS A PLAGUE TO BE WIPED OUT.
PANEL 2: Pan back and up. In the foreground is a ditch filled with dead humans, a few of which were seen in the first panel. In the background is an encampment filled with several tents, vehicles, and "people". There is a small pen, holding several figures, just outside the camp. A small group surround someone strung up to a large "X". A figure crouches in a small cage to the right of the shackled figure.
CAPTION (GENERAL UGASH): AT BEST, THEY ARE ANIMALS.
PANEL 3: Straight on of the person on the "X". It is a haggard, beaten KAMANDI. He has long, dirty blond hair, about shoulder length. The only clothing he wears is a pair of old, ripped 501 Levis. His head is down and cast in shadow.
KAMANDI: OH, THAT IS RICH COMING FROM YOU, UGASH.
PANEL 4: A shot over KAMANDI's shoulder. This is the first time the reader sees that the other "people" in the camp are apes. UGASH and his son stand before KAMANDI. GENERAL UGASH has a look of disgust on his face as he addresses his son. The son looks a little uneasy.
UGASH: AND THIS ANIMAL... I HAVE A VERY STRONG HATRED FOR THIS PARTICULAR... CREATURE.
PANEL 5: KAMANDI has a feeble smile on his face as he responds to UGASH.
KAMANDI: YEAH, WE GO WAY BACK, YOUR DAD AND I.
PANEL 6: UGASH's son cannot take his eyes of KAMANDI. Apparently, his whole world has been shaken by this 'talking beast'.
UGASH JR.: FATHER... HE... IT... IT CAN TALK.
PAGE 2
PANEL 1: A shot from the perspective of the cage, looking up at KAMANDI. DOC CANUS is in the cage, looking a little worse for the wear.
KAMANDI: LET THE DOG GO, GENERAL. HE ISN'T AN ANIMAL.
PANEL 2: UGASH smiles with self-congratulatory smirkiness.
UGASH: CANUS? THE DOG GOES INTO THE DITCH BEFORE YOU.
PANEL 3: A wide shot as a soldier runs up to UGASH.
KAMANDI: SORRY, DOC
PANEL 4: The soldier salutes UGASH as he reports. GENERAL UGASH is not pleased with the interruption.
SOLDIER: INTELLIGENCE PLACES SEVERAL PLATOONS OF TIGERS NEARBY.
UGASH: HOW MANY, AND EXACTLY HOW 'NEARBY'?
PANEL 5: The reporting gorilla officer looks uneasy, as UGASH dismisses his report with a wave of his hand. This panel should read as described from left to right.
SOLDIER: OTHER THAN A CONFIRMED REPORT OF A PLATOON 20 KLIKS SOUTH, SOUTHEAST, GENERAL, THE REST ARE UNSUBSTANTIATED REPORTS FROM PAST RELIABLE SOURCES.
UGASH: I NEED FACTS, SOLDIER, NOT RUMORS. FACTS!
PANEL 6: GENERAL UGASH and his son look startled as a bullet erupts out of the soldier's head.
PAGE 3
PANEL 1: More bullets riddle the falling soldier's body and the ground around the ape GENERAL and his son. They are stumbling back trying to avoid the deadly rain.
PANEL 2: Bullets shatter the wood and bindings holding KAMANDI. He squints, trying to avoid the shower of splinters, all the while shouting defiantly at UGASH.
KAMANDI: HOW'S ABOUT THESE FACTS?!
PANEL 3: Chaos reigns amidst the ape encampment. Explosions and bullets tear apart the surprised regiment and their camp. Apes are running about wildly.
PANEL 4: KAMANDI, managing to free himself, leaps down to free DOC CANUS.
PANEL 5: CANUS bounds out of his prison, while KAMANDI is turning to run. KAMANDI still has the cage's shattered lock in his hand. Bullets continue to rain down all about them.
KAMANDI: WE ARE SO OUTTA HERE.
PAGE 4
PANEL 1: The two ex-captives dodge a hail of bullets, explosions, and falling apes on their bid for freedom. The Doctor is motioning to the few humans left in a small pen just outside the encampment.
CANUS: WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER ANIMALS?
KAMANDI: THE TIGERS ARE AFTER THE APES, SO THE 'ANIMALS' SHOULD BE FINE.
PANEL 2: Just then the tigers pour into the camp, weapons ablaze. The one in the lead is yelling commands.
LEAD TIGER: DEATH TO THE GORILLAS! CLEAR THE ENTIRE CAMP! KILL EVERYTHING! ONLY TIGERS LEAVE HERE ALIVE! GLORY TO GREAT CEASAR!
PANEL 3: Close up on KAMANDI, looking with apprehension over his shoulder at the camp, specifically at the pen with the remaining humans in it. DOC CANUS, closer to freedom, is obviously impatient to finish their escape.
KAMANDI: ...damn...
PANEL 4: KAMANDI makes a bee line for the pen. CANUS is calling after him.
CANUS: KAMANDI!
PANEL 5: KAMANDI tears the door to the pen open, as those in it frantically flee.
KAMANDI: COME ON, GET OUTTA HERE!
PANEL 6: With the human captives fleeing into the forest, KAMANDI turns to join them. He notices GENERAL UGASH's son being driven to the ground by a tiger soldier. Again, he is torn. CANUS is again calling to his friend.
KAMANDI: ...double damn...
CANUS: DAMN FOOLISH ANIMAL. C'MON!
PAGE 5
PANEL 1: Cut to UGASH Jr. He is down on the ground, obviously terrified, with a tiger standing over him preparing to put a bullet in the young ape's skull.
PANEL 2: Small panel: the tiger's finger tightening on the gun's trigger.
PANEL 3: KAMANDI tackles the tiger, knocking the gun, as it fires, from his hand.
PANEL 4: KAMANDI seizes the pistol as he rolls.
PANEL 5: Rising from the roll into a low crouch, KAMANDI shoots the tiger. Without taking his eyes off his target, KAMANDI is yelling at UGASH Jr, who, in the background lies propped up on his elbows, frozen with fear.
KAMANDI: GET YOUR BUTT MOVIN', KID!
PAGE 6
PANEL 1: The GENERAL's son takes off for safety, while his savior finds himself the new target of tiger fire. KAMANDI is firing back.
KAMANDI: LIKE HELL I'M GONNA DIE LIKE THIS! LOTS OF YOU CATS ARE GOING DOWN LONG BEFORE ME!
PANEL 2: Suddenly, KAMANDI's weapon is out of ammo.
SFX: klik klik klik
PANEL 3: He discards the empty gun as he reaches down to retrieve weapons from the fallen soldiers around him.
KAMANDI: PARDON ME, MIND IF I BURROW THIS?
KAMANDI: DIDN'T THINK SO.
PANEL 4: With a pistol in one hand and an automatic rifle in the other, he takes the side of his captors, fighting the invading tigers.
PANEL 5: KAMANDI takes out the enemy while hell continues to break loose around him.
PANEL 6: GENERAL UGASH and KAMANDI suddenly find themselves back to back. They look at each other in surprise.
PANEL 7: Both are obviously unhappy about becoming allies, but, for obvious reasons, choose to deal with it later. They return their attention to their common foe, firing their weapons with abandon.
KAMANDI: LOOKS LIKE WE'RE FRIENDS
UGASH: ONCE WE FINISH WITH THE TIGERS, ANIMAL--
KAMANDI: I KNOW. I KNOW. 'YOU'LL HAVE MY HIDE'.
PAGE 7
*NOTE: I imagine this a very John Woo influenced gunfight.
PANEL 1: KAMANDI and UGASH continue their 'back-to-back' assault on the attacking tigers. This is a bird's eye shot of the two in the center of the camp while tigers pour out of the forest.
PANEL 2: A worm's eye view looking up at KAMANDI, with UGASH behind him. They both look very determined. They are both firing ahead.
PANEL 3: A shot in front of GENERAL UGASH. A bullet slams into his leg. He is firing with his arms spread wide to his left and his write. Both shots take out rushing tigers. Behind him, KAMANDI is still firing straight ahead.
PANEL 4: UGASH kneeling down to retrieve a semi-automatic from one of the nearby fallen tigers. His discarded weapon still hangs in the air. He is reaching down with his left hand, as he fires over that same shoulder. KAMANDI, still next to him, is firing with his arms crossed over each other. His body is twisted so that he is firing in the same and opposite direction as UGASH.
PANEL 5: The empty gun from the previous panel strikes the ground as UGASH stands and continues firing.
PAGE 8
PANEL 1: A ground level shot of the two combatants against a slowly dwindling army. Dead tigers lay everywhere about them.
KAMANDI: COVER ME!
PANEL 2: A shot from in front of KAMANDI. He is dropping both his weapons, and dropping down to retrieve two more. He is falling faster than the weapons, and they hang in the air above him. The ape is twisting sideways, firing over KAMANDI.
PANEL 3: Having snagged two more weapons, KAMANDI, still squatting, is firing in a line perpendicular to UGASH's line of fire.
PANEL 4: Another bird's eye shot, only now all the Tigers are dead. KAMANDI is now standing.
PANEL 5: Small panel. KAMANDI and the massive gorilla General, back to back. Smoke, but no gunfire, wafting from their weapons.
PANEL 6: Small panel. Almost the same as previous panel, only KAMANDI is speaking. GENERAL UGASH is beginning to turn toward him.
KAMANDI: I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, GENERAL, BUT I AM GLAD THAT IS FINISHED.
PANEL 7: Stepping back, UGASH spins and shoots KAMANDI. Once in the arm, and another in the leg. KAMANDI is shocked, and drops his weapons as he begins to fall back.
PAGE 9
PANEL 1: KAMANDI lays on the ground, clutching his left bicep as blood gushes from the gunshot wound. His wounded arm lays limply at his side. He is grimacing. In the background, DOC CANUS, and UGASH Jr. are running toward the two enemies.
KAMANDI: you're...you're welcome... glad I could... glad I could help..
CANUS: KAMANDI!
PANEL 2: DOC CANUS rushes to his friend's side.
KAMANDI: I... MAN, THIS REALLY HURTS... I DON'T THINK THE BIG APE LIKES ME ANYMORE.
KAMANDI: ...OUR NUMBERS UP, DOC.
PANEL 3: The GENERAL's gun is levelled at his foe's head. His hatred for KAMANDI is unmistakable. CANUS, kneeling next to KAMANDI looks up with fear and loathing.
PANEL 4: GENERAL UGASH notices his son standing behind KAMANDI and DOC CANUS. UGASH Jr, a look of concern on his face is clutching his right arm, where blood is flowing freely. The rage still contorts the gorilla's face.
PANEL 5: Screaming in anger, UGASH fires his gun.
PAGE 10
PANEL 1: Shot of KAMANDI and CANUS, smoke coming from the shot just to the left of the human's head. They both look shocked.
PANEL 2: UGASH glares down at the dog and boy.
UGASH: ...you saved my son's life.
PANEL 3: UGASH lowers his head as he raises his arm and points away from himself.
UGASH: LEAVE. NOW! NEXT TIME YOU DIE!
PANEL 4: DOC CANUS helps KAMANDI to his feet.
KAMANDI: GEE, THANKS FOR NOTHIN'.
CANUS: QUITE, BOY.
PANEL 5: CANUS and KAMANDI limp off. UGASH, in the foreground, raises his fist in defiance. Spit flies from his mouth.
UGASH: NEXT TIME, YOU ARE DEAD, ANIMAL! YOU HEAR ME?! DEAD!
THE END.
