Heya, folks,

Guess what I do in my self-imposed lunch break, to take my mind off of....er, making comics?

Yes, yes, backgrounds are the one part of this that I trully invest the most in, but nevermind that.
It´s just some brainless fun to vent out some stress and I´m making up the story as I go, drawing the pannels one at a time (one each meal, give or take).

Don´t be too harsh, remember that it still beats reading "Complete Course of 3DStudio Max" ´s 520 pages of technobabble while I´m eating.

http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0681069201/silversparrow002.jpg

Last note: This is no Watchmen, or Sandman, so don´t expect the ultimate comics experience; as I said, I just decided to start drawing sequentials instead of random drawings when I´m munching muh corn flakes.

Hey eliseu! It has been a while since you've been here, huh?

This clearly hasn't affected your talent in any negative way! Excellent pages, except for -as you said- the lack of backgrounds.

Bruce Lee
05-28-2003, 12:58 PM
Yep. You certainly need more backgrounds. The reader has no real idea where the characters are otherwise. Also, let me comment on the lettering--It's far too small. Not only is it an eye strain to read, but it gives the impression that the characters are whispering.

Food for thought.

Take care,

Really great stuff. Outstanding. Very professional looking. Now get good at backgrounds and become pro.

A nice establishment shot, showing 2 walls of the rooms would help so much.

Try looking at furniture ads in the sunday newspapers for reference. Also, I've found that just drawing a door, window, or stairs can help so much. So take a panel, and put a door, window, and stairs in the panel some-how. See all the ways you can sneak them into a panel.

Hi, folks,

thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

I´ve addressed the ballooning bit because it can ease the reading exercise but unfortunatelly, i won´t be able to invest too much on the backgrounds;

as I said, I´m doing this in my (very short) breaks, and that means that if I wanna tell a story and I don´t wanna sacrify the characters, I´m gonna have to go for the minimalist approach since backgrounds eat too much time.
Sorry......

One more for the road:

Fresh News:

Somewhere between pages 4 and 5, Epyphany struck me and I already know where I wanna take this lil´story.

An interesting development for someone who was contemplating killing off Silversparrow Jr. here in her first superhero assignement and dropping the ball to her big sister´s park (Yeah, yeah, I can already hear you screaming: "- Starman!!)

Not I KNOW where I wanna take this short superhero tale, prob is how to get there.

That´s usually the fun part :).

I'm loving these pages.... I have always been interested in your style. Keep it up.

Is Silver Sparrow a character of yours?

I love the sibling rivalry... Its beautifully executed.

Can't wait to see more!!!!

Thanks, Agent Fire, Silversparrow is one of a few dozen characters I made up many years ago; she was a starfighter pilot for a Galactica-like space opera that I never got to make and she had a wingman called Lovegun. :)

Thanks, Folgore, I have to admit Silversparrow is beginning to grow on me :) .

Edit: Well, page #2´s updated.

I say your doing a damn fine job so far. I can't wait for a new page. I'm already hooked on your story and wanna know where it's going (but don't tell me, just keep drawing!)

The characters look amazing, I can live with the minimalist backgrounds and the colors are outstanding; are you doing those too? Lastly, you say you're doing these in a lunch hour?!? Even if I had 5 hours for lunch I couldn't produce something this good! JV

Thanks, Frank, I´m having a blast drawing this. :)

Thanks to you too, JV7X, I´m doing each pencilled pannel in my lunch breaks, yeah, but the compositing, lettering and coloring are done after work, in my own leisure time (hey, it´s still more productive than watching Gasaraki or playing Metal Gear Solid for the nth time) :) .

Heya, guys , sorry for not giving signs of life in the last few days, trying to catch my breath here after going from a Celeron 700Mhz running WinMe to a P4 2400 Mhz running WinXP :D

Aaand I had to make a litle choice here, between colour and background detail... and I chose to start portraying Jessie Wright/Witt/Childers/Ryder´s adventures in BW format again.

Hope ya folks don´t mind it...

Okay, enough yapping, here´s the continuation of Silver Sparrow´s Baptism of Fire :)

Wow. It's incredlibly amazing how fast you are cranking these out. Compared to how long it takes me to finish a panel on my One Eyed Jack story using MS PAINT.

I officially hate you.

But don't worry. It's just out of jealousy.

And you're right. Getting there is the fun part.

By the way, don't color these. They hold their own on black n white.

Good Lord, Eliseu, I'm tearing up over here. This is one of the best stories I've read in a long time. I love it! I want to see more! I want to know more, like what's the deal with Sparrow's Aunt and Major Evil, who were the other heroes in the Skylair, and how in the name of all that is Holy, do you squeeze all that detail onto regular paper?!? Whatever your secret, you've just become my new hero. Now stop wasting time reading this and get back to work. JV

Thanks for the read. I really enjoyed it.

Good story-telling. I liked this story a lot until the whole 'wind' explanation. From there on it all seemed very forced. Sorry to be so critical, but I think everything else is spot on, exactly the sort of quality I'd like to see.

I don't know, it's kind of like that scene in Episode One where they try to explain The Force as insects or whatever. Like you're trying to tie up all of superhero-dom in one technical swoop, denying the reader their interpretation. Anyway, I think the first act is very well written.

eliseu gouveia
06-21-2003, 01:29 PM
Sorry about that, Siftland, these are one of those creator moments when you can never tell how folks will interpret it the directions you take your story into:

I have people say they ADORED the Wind concept, you saying it´s forced, some saying Silver Sparrow should never have faded into the Universe´s background, others saying that she should have been older (i.e. boobier.... ).

In the end, I just do as my Muse tells me.

Sometimes it works, others it doesn´t........(She IS the responsible for me creating Dr. Dinossaurus when I was 12 after all. :p ).

Anyway, thanks for reading it, I´m glad you liked it, even if only a part of it.

Hi, caanan02,

Thanks, I wasn´t planning on doing a sequel for Silver Sparrow, but I guess picking up Jessie´s sister there would be a nice way to move on.

Not in the near future, though; sorry, but I´ve got the feeling the next few weeks are going to be quite busy to do this again.

Eliseu

P.S.: Also you must note that, from the things Jessie said in the Broken Wing episode, as much as she´d love the role, Jenny would never be as good a Silver Sparrow as she.
Major Evil/Skyknight would make paté (assuming he was still alive by then) outta her.

caanan02

well said well said. What would tight though, is for her sister to have the hidden ability in her, and as she encounters foes, under extream distress, she lashes out, and begins to reveal the a power even beyond that of her sister, but because of he youth and inexperience, she always colapses, not remembering what she did. Just a thought:D

Anyway, you inspire me, dude, to press toward my goals as an comic artist, and one day, soon, tell and epic that will have every relate and even be changed by the characters in the book. Thanks dude. And keep wippin out those MASTER PIECES.

God bless.

Thanks, dudes,

Truthfully, I don´t think I´d give Jenny any particular power that´d grant her an edge over the rest of the superpeople.
I mean, yes, they might have been sisters in a previous, overwritten universe, but now she´s just another cadet learning the ropes, completelly oblivious to the History that went before (and of course Ellis or the Princess would never spill anything, when there´s the risk of her ego getting overbloated).

I´ll have to cook up a nice angle for this one, but either way I don´t think I´ll ever give her any particular uber-powers.

And if you look at it, neither Jessie was that powerfull, her only edge was that her predecessor knew her archenemy´s weaknesses back and forth, allowing her to know what part of Major Evil´s armor to aim for.

I´m really really sorry if these seem a tad rushed, but you wouldn´t believe how overwhelming things have been lately.

Visually Stunning! You’re John Byrne in a skirt. I haven’t seen this type of artistry since the phoenix sage. I’m impressed with the amount of flow that you carry in your storyline despite it being shot from the hip. Excellent resolution technique, every scene came back to itself and engrossed the reader well.

I enjoyed your consistent style and willingness to flex mood and atmosphere. You never got too hung up on subject very long and when the story jumped to a scene you eased the reader into it very concisely, great Pace!

I’m sure if you submit this to marvel-epic or image comics you’ll definitely get picked up. It’s always worth a shot to do something that you enjoy doing. Good Luck!

Hello, folks,

I´m sorry for taking so much time to cook up new pages for Silver Sparrow.

I really appreciate your comments and input on the story, you´ve been great.

Now for some bad and not-so-good news.

Not-so-good news: I actually am a guy. Sorry....

Bad News:

I am going to have to postpone Jessie´s adventures undefinitelly... or at least until I finish coloring my LITTLE PEOPLE comic first.

There´s 5 chapters (out of 8) to finish still and those of you who know about it will tell you that this is a baby that´s been chained to the delivery room since at least the last days of my college years.
It´s time to give it some sense of closure, so no more horsing around for me until I close this unfinished business.

Sorry, Jessie....

Sorry your style of writing misleads me, plus your comic featured a heroine very well. Almost to well, with the tangent of Jenny drooling over the cop that made me hope you’re female. Sorry about that.

Nonetheless, these new sequentials are great and have more of the Alan Davis inking style feel to them, bold and boarding. I personally prefer the Terry Austin inking style you did on some of the Sliver Sparrow. It enhances your style of drawing better.

Now the color you do deal with light ok, but it still to gradient towards the shading side. I’d like to see solids blending into solids more instead of fade into fades. The use of textures will greatly contribute to correct this as well. When you see the detail behind the lighting you’ll have more to go on how light affects it surface. Remember to work in layers (using Photoshop) like a onion with everything stacking onto your surface.

Here’s a link that give the best tutorial.

Thanks, Cuddly, i aim to please. :)

Thanks , Vaas, you made some very constructive observations which I´ll be sure to pay great attention to - my Muse would have my head before allowing me to further neglect my colouring duties-. :)

I saw this post when it was originally started, and I was going to say something then, but I was so inspired to do pages that I got offline without saying a thing....
Now I regret it, because here before me are some truly wonderful pages...and every bit of it still inspires me to go and sit down and do sequentials....
Beautiful work, and I hope in some way you can get all this published....perhaps in a graphic novel with a sketchbook in it as well. I'd love to pick it up sometime.

I'm not so sure about the last splash page here...I think it might be too much bg... You could definitely zoom in on the girl at least a couple feet...

The rest is really cool...I like it...
