Homeward Bound

by Chip Skelton

PAGE 1 (5 panels)

PANEL 1: An establishing shot of a World War Two, German concentration camp. Railroad tracks run up from bottom corner left to a lightly fortified building. The old building is roughly the size of a medium-sized strip mall. A double row of tall fencing topped with barbed wire extends from either side of the long building, turning 90 degrees, and eventually forming a square with a similar building on the opposite end. The building on the far end has numerous chimneys jutting up from its roof. Both the building in the front of the camp, and in the back are made of brick with wood roofing. The railroad track runs clear through the camp, exiting on the far side from the building with the chimneys. Two rows of wooden, ramshackle barracks run parallel with the tracks. The rows are six barracks long, making a grand total of twenty-four barracks. The camp is located in a beautiful valley of low, sloping hills. Guards can be seen walking the perimeter, and other figures can be seen milling about the camp itself.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG (no tail): GIRLS? IT IS TIME TO GO.

INGRID AND MADELINE (NT): PAPA! PAPA!

PANEL 2: We move along the perimeter of the double fence. A guard is patrolling and heading off panel left. Through the fence are numerous imatiated prisoners. Some walk in rows of two with a guard or two walking
behind them. Other prisoners are milling or loitering about the camp, while a few guards walk among them.

INGRID (NT): IT IS TIME TO MOVE TO THE NEW HOUSE? PAPA, IS IT TIME?

MADELINE (NT): OH, PAPA, WE ARE SO EXCITED!

PANEL 3: Floating over the railroad tracks, we are amidst the barracks, and moving toward the back of the camp. Signs of despair are everywhere.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG (NT): YES, INGRID, IT IS TIME TO MOVE TO OUR NEW HOUSE.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG (NT): I'M GLAD YOU ARE EXCITED, BUT WE REALLY MUST HURRY ALONG.

PANEL 4: The focus of this panel is the the font door of one of the barracks in the row closest to the tracks. The door is open and we see the back of LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG, a prison guard.

INGRID: PAPA, LOOK. MADELINE PUT A PINK BOW IN MY HAIR AND I--

MADELINE: INGRID PUT A YELLOW ONE IN MINE. AREN'T WE PRETTY, PAPA?

PANEL 5: The shot is over LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG 's shoulder. We can see the inside of the barracks. There are rows and rows of beds, tightly packed three high from floor to ceiling. Two or thee beds away sit two old women, INGRID and MADELINE. They are wearing the tattered, grey-striped prison garb. Though they are little more than gaunt skin and bones, they look nonetheless happy and enthusiastic. They are almost completely bald, with long scraggly thin patches of hair growing haphazardly from their otherwise naked scalps. INGRID has a tiny pink bow tied in her wispy hair, while MADELINE wears a yellow one.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: YES, GIRLS, YOU ARE BOTH LOVELY.

PAGE 2 (4 panels)

PANEL 1: LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG has stepped back as the two women are exiting their barracks. They are excited. The misery is everywhere around them.

MADELINE: TELL US ABOUT IT AGAIN.

INGRID: AGAIN, PAPA.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: NOT NOW, GIRLS.

MADELINE: OH, PAPA, YES. NOW.

PANEL 2: The women are walking in front of LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG. They are walking parallel with the tracks, toward the rear of the camp. The guard's rifle remains slung over his shoulder. INGRID is looking back, over her shoulder, at LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG.

INGRID: PLEASE, PAPA. PLEASE.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: VERY WELL, INGRID. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT OUR NEW HOUSE?

MADELINE: I LIKE THE GARDEN.

INGRID: I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THE GARDEN, TOO.

PANEL 3: A chest high shot. INGRID is nearest us, with MADELINE just past her, and LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG, looking uneasy, still walking behind them.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: OKAY, GIRLS. THE GARDEN HAS MANY APPLE TREES THAT GROW THE SWEETEST APPLES YOU HAVE EVERY TASTED.

INGRID: AND THE ROSES. THE ROSES, PAPA.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: YES, WELL... THERE ARE MANY BEAUTIFUL ROSE BUSHES ALL ALONG THE BACKYARD. THE ROSES ARE BIGGER THAN YOUR HEAD, INGRID. AND THEY SMELL SO VERY LOVELY.

PANEL 4: A low, bird's eye view of the trio walking toward the back of the camp. LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG is now slightly ahead of the women. Over to the right a guard kicks the heck out of a prisoner.

MADELINE: MAMA LOVES ROSES. IS SHE AT THE HOUSE ALREADY?

INGRID: ARE WE ALMOST THERE?

PAGE 3 (5 panels)

PANEL 1: A shot from the guard tower atop the building in the back of the complex that the three are approaching. They are even with the last row of barracks.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: YES... WE ARE ALMOST THERE. MAMA IS EXCITED TO SEE YOU TWO.

INGRID: OUR ROOMS---

MADELINE: TELL US ABOUT OUR ROOMS, PAPA.

PANEL 2: We are peering over the shoulder of LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG. Both women are looking back, and are still very excited. They are obviously oblivious to the cruelty all around them. In the background, we see a line of prisoners entering the building the three are approaching.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: YOUR... ROOMS. YES, WELL...

INGRID: ARE THERE LOTS OF TOYS?

MADELINE: INGRID AND ME ARE 7 YEARS OLD NOW, PAPA. CAN WE HAVE OUR OWN BEDS?

PANEL 3: They have left the barracks behind them, and have entered the rear yard. Most of the prisoners have entered the building with all the chimneys .

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: OH, YES, INGRID, THERE ARE MAY DOLLS AND MARCHING ANIMAL TOYS.

MADELINE: WHAT ABOUT OUR BEDS, PAPA?

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: WOULD YOU BOTH LIKE YOUR OWN BEDS?

PANEL 4: They grow even closer to the doorway the other prisoners are entering. Most of the prisoners previously seen entering the building are inside now. The women are still very enthusiastic. They are clapping. LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG wears an uneasy, forced smile.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: THEN YOU SHALL BOTH HAVE YOUR OWN BEDS... WITH BEAUTIFUL, FEATHER SOFT SHEETS MAMA HAS MADE ESPECIALLY FOR EACH OF YOU.

INGRID: OH, PAPA...

MADELINE: I AM SO EXCITED. AREN'T YOU, PAPA?

PANEL 5: Several guards stand outside of the door the line of prisoners have just entered. They look bored. The trio are at the door. A sign over the door reads: "BRAUSBAD" (which means 'shower bath').

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: I... WE ARE HERE GIRLS. WHY...

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: WHY DON'T YOU GO IN AHEAD OF ME. YOUR... MAMA IS VERY EXCITED TO SEE YOU.

MADELINE: IT IS LOVELY.

PAGE 4 (4 panels)

PANEL 1: The two women enter the dark doorway, as a guard prepares to shut the door. INGRID is looking back. LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG is turning away from the doorway as he reaches into his uniform jacket.

INGRID: WE LOVE YOU, PAPA.

PANEL 2: The guard closes the door. LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG takes out a cigarette from his inside chest pocket. Another guard (KLAUS) next to LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG is pointing back at the door with his thumb, as though he were hitchhiking.

KLAUS: CRAZY OLD HAGS. GOOD RIDDANCE.

KLAUS: I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU HUMORED THEIR SILLY DELUSIONS.

PANEL 3: LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG's face is hidden in shadow as he lights his cigarette. KLAUS continues to speak to his fellow guard. The guard at the door is closing the latches. The latch on top is closed as he prepares to close the bottom one.

KLAUS: I, FOR ONE, WILL NOT MISS THEIR CRAZY PRATTLING.

PANEL 4: LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG's face is still cloaked in shadow.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: SHUT UP, KLAUS.

LIEUTENANT SCHATZBERG: JUST SHUT UP.

Good job Chip. Excellent work. You have a good ear for dialogue. Been juicing out alot recently, or are these older scripts?

Thanks all for the compliments. I am very proud of this story.

Hey, LM. I write roughly a script a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I've only been doing this a little over 6 months, so I need the practice. Mostly, I am writing for the assignments at six shooter.

Later all,
Chip

Writing assignments sound like a good thing. Imagine that.

What's the address for Six Shooter?
