I still haven't nailed the three-quarters view. Its always the outside eye that fudges up the whole face. Any help? I mean, besides looking at pictures of people. What do you guys do when you aren't drawing from reference?

Damn.. the dog IS good! Shit, all I tend to draw are 3/4 views (but I started really liking the "Alex Ross angle" this year) and all I can say is "practice". ;onei; :D

Something you might keep in mind is that the bridge of the nose will take up some of that space on the outside half of the face (in more extreme angles), so the eye width will be smaller on the plane of the face (but the eye is a ball, so it won't look small since it bulges out). Try this link. It looks alright. http://www.sierravista.wuhsd.k12.ca.us/basicart/faces.htm

I think my problem is that even though the eye socket is sunken in, I forget that the face is still on the front of the head.

Its going to be a rough summer not having figure drawing classes to keep me in shape. Oy.

Mike, that's a damn cool link!

I know! I just googled it up when I was replying!

And Nate- maybe now's a good time to go to the art supply store, buy a pack of Super Sculpey and make a couple of heads. You can always mush it back like Play-Doh but unlike Play-Doh, it won't get hard until you bake it. The wonders of chemical compounds!

Oh yea. Say "no" to drugs kids.

Cool pic, Nate. I agree the thing about Faye looking disappointed rather than cool n sexy.

That's what I've heard it called.. You know that one where the camera is below the character's waist, looking up at them? It's like a 3/4 turn body shot and you can see at least one of the character's eyes and up into their nose, slightly. Like in this shot: http://www.alexrossart.com/gallery/oversized/wonderwoman/img/ww2223.html

Sorry for the hijack..

wow that stuff looks great.

but i guess i cant help you with the 3/4 view either. but 1 thing i see is that both eyes don´t are not placed on the same line ... the left one (her right) is raised too much ...

Mike:
why is you first link broken for me :(

In film terms, that Alex Ross view is referred to as a "Worm's eye view"

May I ask you a humble question?

How long do sketches like this take you?
I fear the answer will be something like "30 seconds", but I want to make sure...

The 3/4 view can indeed be a beeyotch. Whenever faces screw me over, I resort to my dear and trusted action man figure.
Oh action man, the times you have saved me!

And in case you don't always carry around an action man (like I do), try to make sure the eyes are on the same line , and keep the facial plains in mind.

*shrug* I've never really had trouble drawing 3/4 angles. Well, I guess I did. But I just practiced til I got it. I used to have trouble with profiles a while back..heh. I don't know why. They were supposed to be the easiest..well now they are anyway.

Carry around a poseable action figure or whatever. Like that Ra Havoc. That's a good idea. I'm going to start doing that.

Each of those head probably took about a mintue to two minutes. Except Ein, he took a good solid half hour of intense drawing from life.

Cowboy Bepop was an anime. There was a movie you know!

Those are neat sketches, Nate. I think the crazy computer girl looks too much like a boy though. And Faye should have bigger eyes. She looks like a real sourpuss here.

I saw him draw the dog in like 10 seconds. With me that would have taken 10 minutes. This is why I plan to eat Nate's head and steal his powers.

What, don't you think you'll be full after having eaten MY head?

:D

The only advice I can give you, Nate, is to remember always that the eyes are on a curved line that runs from ear to ear. The eyebrows are level with the top of the ear, the bottom of the eye is around the brindge of the nose, and they curve AROUND the face. It takes practice...

Personally I prefer the 3/4 view over all others... most dynamic, espescially with a bit of a high or low angle.
