this seems like a dumb question for my first post... but i"m in the market for a new scanner, my four year old Umax just isn't cutting it anymore. Can anyone make any suggestions for a good model scanner that'll do a really good job with pencils and inks?

thanks!

I got a Microtek Scanmaker 4800 for $70 that seems to do relatively well. I've seen worse, but I've seen better... I think Tony Moore and Robin Riggs might have better insight into scanner types, but you might always just look around the net for reviews.

Upon your suggestion, I decided to pick up a Microtek Scanmaker 4800 last month. It worked GREAT for a month until today, when all of a sudden, the scans started coming out like snowy TV images, w/ multi-colored streaks.

Did you have this problem as well?

I highly recommend anything from Epson. They make excellent, reliable, quality machines in my experience.
