Painter 7 help

Ok, here's my problem. When I start a new project in painter, I can get the new layers to act right. It won't let me add any colors or brushstrokes to the new layer. I play with the positioning of the layers to see if that helps but to no avail :( .

I'm just wanting to know what settings am I forgetting to allow me to do what I want to do? This might be confusing, but I'm desperate, please help!!!

that's ok folks! I found my answer... I was treating it like photoshop and just needed to lighten or darken the color. * slaps forehead*
