View Full Version : Pencilers, Inkers and Colorists: UNITE!!!
Celestial Wars

I was thinking it would be a really cool idea if all the top pencilers, inkers and colorists came together to a draw/ink/color-off together!
We could all decide on what kind of pic should be drawn. The pencilers of the PJ boards could then do the draw-off. After that the inkers would do an ink-off with the winning entry after which the best colorists can show their stuff coloring the winner of the ink-off. The idea is that everybody can join in to make something really spectaculair, worthy of the PJ boards. Every member of these boards can help out, even if you're not participating in penciling, inking or coloring anything.
Of course it is important that everybody contribute to this project if we want to make the most out of it. One person can even participate in different -offs if he/she likes to (for the multi-talented people at PJ).
So, any thoughts on what to ;pencil; ? :p

i knew this kinda off would come out some day .....
IM in for the color part !
Maybe we could actually make team , like in one team there would be a penciler inker and colorist .... So in this off ..... There would be like a couple of complete team with very different entry ! how about it ?
All right I am going to make a proposal to sweeten the pot on this one.
I am willing to pay the winner of each stage $100. The conditions are these. The image must have to do with 69 and sex but not have such blatant nudity that I can't put it on a t-shirt.
I do not have a particular image in mind but I want to be able to have a say in the design that is chosen.
Attached are 2 images motorpsycho just completed for me. You can see the 69 logo that my company owns. It is on the surfboard and around the edges of both rings. "The Golden Rule" is our motto kind of like nike's "just do it". The Golden rule if you are wondering is: "Do unto others as you would have done unto you". We thought it pretty appropriate for our 69 motto and I'm sure we will piss off some of the religious type. (negative publicity is sometimes the best kind when you are running a business). Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

I'm in for the pencils.
If you guys want to do this for the back of one of our t-shirts, I will also give everyone who enters this contest a t-shirt with the winning image. I know, I know big deal a t-shirt! But hell it's something.
-SUYT
If you guys structure it like WarlocksS is suggesting, by teams, that would be awesome. Each team has a penciler, inker and colorer. That team then decides what type of image they would like to do. I potentially will then buy more than one image. Each image I like I will pay $300 ($100 to each team member). We can still pick the ultimate winner but it will give more than one team an opportunity to make some money and give me a number of different designs to choose from.
What do you guys say? If you guys are skeptical and think I won't pay, ask Juan and Motorpsycho. They both have been paid by me for their images.

Put me down for inks.
Here is our logo in 2 different styles 2-D and 3-D. If the image can incorporate these or the grafitti "The Golden Rule" image that would be cool. If you use the logo and want to eliminate the words "The Golden Rule" that is fiine. These images can be a minor or major part of the image it is up to each team.

Pretty sweet looking stuff there, Dismas. However I think the idea of this contest is the inkers have an ink-off using the winning pencils from the draw-off. Of course...I could be wrong. That's just the way I read it though. Anyone feel free to correct me.

pencils...miracles can happen folks
Where the heck is Celestial Wars? We need to get this organized and get some better ground rules.
1. How long do you guys usually get to do one of these things?
2. Are we doing teams that get to do basically whatever they want or is it going to be done in stages where the pencillers go nuts on one concept, then the winning image goes to inkers, the best ink image then goes to colors?
I prefer the team concept.
There was some concern that there weren't stringent ground rules on what image is to be done. I suggested not having those ground rules because it allows you guys to be creative as hell. If you like the fantasy type world you can do something along that line. If you like cartoon style you can go that way. Or whatever idea you might have. I'd like to see all kinds of different stuff. That is my biased preference because I want a number of images to choose from but if you guys would rather have a single concept and go on that I can live with that.
If you do the "any image goes" concept and all the images kick ass I will buy them all. They are going to go on t-shirts for a new company.

this thread rminds me of that "workers fo the world unite" line in grosse point blank
ANYWAY< got an idea for a draw off by readign this, how bout a couple people team up before hand, they pick eachother, and which ever team can provide the best 2 or 3 page sequential wins
I wouldn't mind joining in but whats the pic gonna be. I'd be interested in doing a pinup rather do a sequentials
Here's an idea for an image. This is going to be a fantasy picture.
It will be of a women facing you with the 69 logo tattooed big on her stomach. She is completely naked but you don't see any of the good stuff because there is a dragon with part of its body coiled around her. You can do whatever you want with the background. Put a castle back there or a sunset or something else or nothing at all. It's up to you. Flames are cool too.
Any variation of this is welcome.
What do you guys think of that?
You can still do this as a team event or in stages with everyone working on the same image.
Celestial Wars, sorry for treading on your thread but I'm pumped about you guys doing another image for me.
And I'm sure everyone can use an extra $100 in their pocket.

Deadlines:
If we do it in stages which is how Celestial Wars first suggested it. Is 10 days for each stage long enough or too long?
Empty Vessel Android
12-21-2002, 01:31 PM
I'd much rather do the stages thing than the teams thing...
Here's a slight change or variation to the image.
Instead of the women have a 69 logo tatooed on her stomach she could be holding a shield in one hand with the 69 logo on it defending herself from another dragon that is swooping in and blowing fire on her.
You guys would buy a shirt with an image like that on it, wouldn't you?
-SUYT
Depending in the pencils i may be interested in inking something.
And no, i wouldn't buy a t shirt with that on, oddly enough though i would probably ink it for $100
Kris.

12-21-2002, 09:36 PM
This sounds very interesting, I would definately love to take a crack at this too. Sorry to mention this Suyt but your 1st idea if the 69 in the stomach sounds better. First, it's much sexier in the stomach than on the shield. 2nd if its' on the shield and the dragon is blowing fire you're really not gonna see much of the number on the shield and most of the attention is gonna be on the dragon than on the actual 69 but hey it's your call. If I do one it's gonna be your first idea, I'll do one and post it here, I have an idea.
Cool! It is up to you to do the tattoo or the shield. If you do the shield make sure you can see the 69 logo ( i.e. the flames aren't quite to the shield). But I like the tatoo thing too so go for it. OR there doesn't even have to be a second dragon.
If you do the shield I think you should have the women wearing warrior clothes so it doesn't look too out of place.
You guys are the artists. Make me proud!

Shpydir
12-22-2002, 02:14 PM
Yeah, my vote is for stages. Since I'm like the EveningDevil of coloring around here I don't think I'd get picked for a team.
In the interest of getting this contest started and keeping it simple, let's do it in stages with no teams.
The image is to be the fantasy dragon/women/69 gear logo shield or tattoo as described in previous posts.
Let's do 10 days per stage.
So the pencilers must have their image submitted by January 2.
Please submit images to 69-gear@69-gear.com
You can put a watermark on your image to protect your art if you choose.
Please let me know if this format will work for everyone.

Dude.. this is confuse to me. if there will be stages.. how it will work?!
And teams?!
If teams, I'm going to be with Mijka...
if stages, I guess I will sign in in every stage (well.. we gotta have some fun!)...
Bt Im confused...
and I know In one only, but is it okay to ask for a loose deadline, I'm having some health problem withmy dad right now.
If not, its ok... I will try to make it anyway.
I'd really like to do the teams thing but it is going to get too confusing so we are going to do stages.
1. All the pencilers draw the image first.
2. We decide which one is the best one
3. We post the winner of the pencilers and that is what the inkers work on.
4. We choose a winner out of the inkers
5. We take the winner of the inkers and that is what the colorers work on.
If you want to participate in more than one category that is fine.
Basically inkers and colorers can't do squat until the pencilers draw the image.
We are going to stick with the 10 day deadlines. Sorry Psico.

so when's the colorists turn ?
i'm in the vacations atm and i'll return in 2003

Man!!! Didn't expect so much joy over one idea! Nice to know everybody likes to join in.
Seeing as this is my second post and my first was the thread-starter (!!!) I'll have to organize the stuff everybody has been posting up. But first let me start with suyt. Although I'm not really happy with the fact that you turned this idea into something commercial, I feel I'm not the only one deciding on this one, because even though I came up with the idea, this project was designed to let everybody of PJ participate, so I feel everybody has a right to voice their opinion on the matter. Personally, I'm fine with you giving money to the winners of this project but I got to be honest: I don't like the idea that you are making up the rules now. Again, I'm not saying I should be the one to do that, I think everybody should have a say in this. What it comes down to (DAMN I need a lot of words to say what I want to say :D ) is that it comes down to what everybody else wants.
Although I really like the team idea I think we should use it for our next big PJ-project. I think we should stick with the different rounds idea for this one so everybody can join in. Second, we've got to decide on a pic for the pencilers to do and I think everybody can decide on that one so post up your ideas.
On a side note, I'm not that fond of the logo's suyt provided and again, the idea of this turning into something commercial so I personally think it would be best if suyt would make his own thread with his own challenge. This way he can make up his own rules and get's exactly what he wants AND we feel free to do whatever we want without the money dangling before our eyes. I know it's inviting, but I feel this project should be about something more than just dough. This should be something Penciljack and everybody on these boards should be proud of in the end. That's what I'm aiming for anyway. Hope everybody else is too! :)

Elven Warrior (could be a ranger, a fighter, a paldain, I don't really care :P I'd do ranger, personally). Fantasy setting. At the very least, forest bg. Something like that.
Or:
Mermaid! :D Underwater scene! Who likes lots of blue?
Woodnymph at her lake?
Pensive fighter with his blade? (Although big strong muscley guys seem a bit too easy to me).
I'd rather it weren't a group shot though. I -know- I don't have time to draw in umpteen different faces and bodies. :(
Uhmmmm.....
Something Angelic? Not necessarily spiritual, but containing angels. Or deamons. Or both. You know how it goes. Heaven, Hell, swords, fights, harps, tridents, you name it.
--personally, I prefer the ones near the top more. A bit of tranquility might be nice :P

Wow this thread gets more and more interesting everytime I read it. CWars you can count me in as colorists as well. I think they should be more than one choice of pencils to ink. Maybe 2 or 3, their is alot of talent in this site and Suyt said he might need more than 1 image. Maybe after all the pencils are done their is a voting and the top 2 or 3 get picked and then inked and then colored. Just a thought. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all as well.

Put me down 4 colors, Celestial Wars, but if I understand the last 200 posts correctly, this project is gonna take a while!
A concept must be chosen (or maybe 2 or 3), then drawn and voted one, then inked and voted on, and then colored!! Sjeez, talk about yer 'couple of month's-project'
don't matter, like I said, sign me up for colors, feel like kickin' some anussus this time...:( ...yeah right.....
:p Grtz, Damian
C Wars. As previously stated I apologize for treading on your thread. Maybe it is best if I start my own thread but if you guys are already doing images I thought I would throw in on it. You guys do so many cool images that you don't get paid for it is almost a crime. How about this.
I loved all the suggestions of images that were thrown out by Mijka. You guys run the whole thing. If at the end there a couple images I like I will contact the penciler, inker and colorer of that image and ask if I can purchase it. If the 69-logo hasn't been inserted into the image but has a natural fit the artists can probably work it in and we can make a deal at the end.
I hear you on the commercial end of things and I don't want that to spoil the contest because I think it is a great idea for a contest.
How does that sound?

7 days per phase seems about right to me. Add in a day or two, maybe three for voting. Yeah. That's about right. Unfortunately, it meens my colors will have to be rushed, since exams start for me about then. (20th of January-ish) Anyway, back to the subject matter:
I say, ok, if everyone likes fantasy setting, that's great. Let's be a bit more specific, though. We don't really want18 different subjects coming out. I mean, we can be loose on the bg, stance, clothing (specifics) and whatnot, but having submitions of elf rangers next to human barbarians, next to hlafling rouges, next to half orc fighters etc etc etc ad infinitum, might be a bit too confusing, and, in the long run, throw off the voters. I'm sure you all see what I mean...
Say, for instance, you want (and this is just an example, allthough, imho, it's a decent idea too) a female elf ranger, in a woodland setting, hunting something.
Which means: She has to be:
A FEMALE ELF
waering RANGER'S GARB
in a FOREST SETTING
HUNTING (so no half naked chicks getting out of a pool of water, wringing out their hair, even though,to a point, I could prolly work that in too...)
Just a thought mind you. But I think that's about specific enough so that we don't all go six ways to Sunday, but loose enough so as not to stifle our collective creative genious (or, in my case, lack, thereof).

To finalize this thing so we can get started and reading the last 20 or so posts I've decided on the subject matter:
Steampunk it is! Throw in any fantasy, technology, sci-fi, naked chicks (oops, did I say that out loud! ) you want. Personally I don't think we should narrow the subject down to anything else. Just let your imagination run wild. Mostly it's the idea that counts and you're all talented people so use your imagination and astound the rest of us!
As for deadlines: let's keep it nice and long. I'm thinking 2-3 weeks for pencils including the voting. Jan. 31th's the voting stops and the inkers can start their magic.
I'm not sure about what the inkers are going to do. Choose 1) All do the winning pic(k), 2) Doing one of the top three (your choose) 3) Doing the one you like most of all the entries.
I'm for the second option. Let's hear what you guys have to say...
Current deadline for the pencilers: 25th of Januari. Good luck!!! :)
PS. NO NAKED CHICKS!!!!

Yeah, uh, hi....I'm really confused as to what the true rules and regulations are. Could we get that again? I've read the previous posts and walked away e little more nuts and a lot less shiny.

take me off the pencilers list, i've gotten a little busy since this thing started, and then took so long to figure out what it was we were going to draw. hopefully by the time the coloring part comes around, i'll be able to do that.

Raede: you're off the penciler's list as requested.
menace and elcid19: Explaining Steampunk is a bit difficult. Just to keep it simple, let's just say you have to mix fantasy with sci-fi. You could make a character with a piece of technology on his body which could be possible in your mind, just not in reality.
2 examples:
- the gunblade Squall uses in Final Fantasy VIII. It doesn't exist and it can't be done but it's a cool idea anyway.
- in 'Steampunk' (the comic by Bachalo and Kelly) the leading man has a coal furnace for a heart. He needs coal to keep on going and steam is coming out of pipes, which are attached to his artificial, metal arm. The rest of his body is normal.
It would be great if you could think of a character like that in a decent sci-fi, fantasy setting (meaning background).
Hope that helps you guys. Don't forget: a background is obligatory!!!

As an addendum to Celestial Wars' post: Steampunk, in effect is placing anything in a Sci-Fi setting that doesn't belong. Like, for instance, an elf riding the subway, is the simplest example of SteamPunk I can come up with. It's not too extremem though, and I imagine we're goint to get some rather far out wntries this time around, so you may want to go a bit further afield, but that's up to you, of course. Like...say...magic existing in the current world. What if they'd discovered electricity in one of those RPG realms where elves and ogres and whatnot live? ;)
Celestial Wars

Make an electric toothbrush, which in reality is a companion you can take with you on your quests and has really smelly breath. Oh yeah, I can see it now, MiJKa.
Personally, I can't wait for the far fetched entries. As I've said before, most of the time it's the idea that counts, especially with this challenge. Can't wait to see what people came up with for there character and surroundings.

Just so I'm clear since I've never done a draw-off, how and when do we post our drawings? I decided to go with a mix of Victorian/Gothic Steampunk since those were the most prevalent sites I got on the web searches. It's been fun and I'm probably going to finish it in the next few days.

I kind f wish I'd had more time. I was rushed, but decided, after studying 'till 4am, to pull an all nighter and finish this one. I even ended up having to re-trace the lines representing the wood grain >_<;;; They were too light. Gawd, I hate drawing them, too..... Anyway, though, here:

The full sized image can be found here (http://www.deviantart.com/view/1167837).
(Sorry to send everyone to dA for the full sized one, I just thought it was a bit too big to post here, as it was. I might be wrong though. I haven't slept at all... Uhmmm. Yeah. So, I assume I don't have to PM this to you now, right Celestial Wars?

MiJKa - This is awesome too, MiJKa. And no, you don't have to PM me, this is fine. Although I would suggest to you to resize the pic a little, because the small one is very small and the big one is way too big. It'll make your odds better I think.
Well, this round is starting off really terrific. Let's hope the quality of the other entries is just as good!!! :)

Thanks, MiJKa.
For all the pencilers who are posting their entries here, please make sure it's a pic and not a link. It'll be a lot easier for me when I make the voting thread.
Second, please post an additional link of your pic in high-res (300 dpi, 297x420 mm big or something like that) in case an inker wants to ink your pic for the next round (even if you think you don't stand a chance, cause you do!)
About 8 days to go before the deadline on this first round, I think. Happy pencilin' and have a great (and productive) weekend! :)

Hmmm... I tried something with a pic of yours on the portfolio but it blew up in my face. To be honest, I don't know if comic's portfolio allowes your pic to be shown on another site. I think deviant allowes it, so maybe you could try to get an account there. Don't know if it will cost you anything. Sorry if I can't be a bigger help with this. Maybe somebody else could help you out. For instance, you could PM the moderators about it.
J. Colwell: that's fine, J. Don't forget though that the official deadline is the 27th of Jan. Please try to post it before then, thanks. Hope everybody else is working on their pieces as well. Good luck everybody! :)

Within reason, deviantart allows external hosting. I mean, you an post it on one, maybe two forums. If you're not danimation, that is :P I imagine he taxes it simply posting in the ARENA, he's so popular. Anyway, the account is free. You u/l the picture, view it (full sized) right click, select properties and copy the picture url. Then you use that when you want to post an image here.
Abuse of this privelage WILL get your account terminated and possibly you BANNED from dA.

Suyt,
Although you have not stated it outright. I assume you plan on giving the winner/s $100 in exchange for the rights to reproduce the finished work on T-shirts for resale?
Is this correct?

Celestial, you mis-understand my query here.
I am asking because I do NOT think it is proper for Suyt to be paying a cash "prize" to anyone in order for him to gain artwork to generate product for him to sell. He did not state this directly, but it was implied if you read his posts. Just seemed a bit shady to me. Suyt if this was not your intention, my apologies for misinterpreting your posts.
I have no interest whatsoever in obtaining money for anything here, in fact I humbly lend my pro-inking skills to the goal of this thread if it will help out.
I am ready and willing to jump on board ;)

Sorry for misunderstanding! And you're in the inking round of the competition. But don't get your brushes out yet. First we have to vote on the penciler's round (deadline's the 27th of Jan.) Don't forget to vote now!
menace: great entry! Love the idea. Great stuff.
To conman and elcid19: Forget the word 'Steampunk'. I wanted to make things clearer, but I managed to make it worse. This is the general idea:
It all comes down to a mix of fantasy and sci-fi (technology). I've given some examples of what you could do as did MiJKa (check pages 9 and 10 of this thread). Furthermore, the entries so far explain by themselves what the idea is. Just look at menace's pic:
It's a centaur (a mythical creature), but it's not half-horse/half-man, but half-horse/half-machine (or robot if you will). That's perfect. Edward Scissorhands (right?!) would be a good entry as well, but you've got to think of something yourselves of course. Make it something original that's never been seen before. That's all there is to it and that's plenty let me tell you. Hope it helps! :)

Here is my entry. Like I said before, I went with a Victorian/Gothic themed Steampunk. This is the first time I've drawn Steampunk and I think it's a genre I could really get into.
I meant to post up earlier this week, but I got snowed in on the other side of the mountains. Good luck to all.

Hey everybody!
Today's the deadline, so I hope everybody posts up before the end of the day. Five great entries so far. Let's see if we can see some more!
I'll probably be making the voting thread tomorrow and include everybody who said to enter, so even if you haven't posted your pic up yet, you can still enter after deadline.

The voting thread on the Arena board will be made tomorrow. I simply don't have the time today to put it out there. On the lucky side (and I hope no one will disagree), that means that everyone who hasn't posted up their entries yet still has until tomorrow to do so. Let's hope some more people will show their stuff, since 15 to 20 people agreed to participate in the penciler's round and only 5 entries are in as of yet.
See you tomorrow.... here or on the Arena board. Don't forget to vote and keep checking THIS thread for the next round: the inker's round! Any comments until then are more than welcome here too!
