I've never really been into comics all that much... well, I have in a way. I have about 300 comic book posters (I always get two copies of Wizard's Postermania when it comes out). So I love the art and everything, but I don't know anything about comics or the characters... so when there's an assignment in Critical Mass or something in the arena that has to do with specific characters, I just can't do it, because I know little to nothing about the characters...
Anyway, let me get to the point. I have a lot of money to blow at the local comic shop... what should I get? I'm looking for all kinds of art, the coolest characters, and what not.

Super Patriot: America's Fighting Force (#'s 1-3, 4 out soon)
Battle Pope: Volume One TPB
Battle Pope: Mayhem TPB
Battle Pope Presents TPB
anything with Hellboy in it (except his Painkiller Jane crossover...that was painful)
The Coffin TPB
Hard Boiled Oversized Color TPB
The Amazing Screw-On Head
...that's a good start.

The Incredible hulk is very good at the moment (and has been for about the last 6 or 7 issues).
The Amazing Spiderman is extremely good.
Daredevil is always good.
I think The Hood is pretty cool.
The brand new Captain Marvel comic has an excellent story and fantastic art.
I love the art in Doom Patrol, but the stories are not that good.
Why not go into the shop and browse 'til you see something you like the look of?
Its all a matter of taste ...............

I agree, go in there and look for something YOU like. Or ask your local retailer what books are hot right now. A good selling book is usually a good sign that they are doing something right in that title whether it be story or art.

I completely agree with Fumunda.
Try checking some european stuff, if you can, as well. I heard Humanoids is publishing a load of books from Gimenez, Bilal and Moebius in the US.

If your into certain artists then try to get what they do. If its trade paperback form all the better you can get the whole series at the fraction of the cost. If they're certain heroes then get those issuse. Basically get what YOU like and not get just because people say you should. Browse look around. Some times I go through baclk issues to get some old comics from a certain artist (i.e. New Mutants drawn by Bill Sienkiekz or the old Doom Patrols that have Simon Bisley Covers that were written by Grant Morrison those are really good). But Trade paperbacks are definietly the way to go and just build up your collection bit by bit no need to splurge on things you might like.

when i first started to collect comics i grabbed everything that looked interesting. what i would do though if i were you is this. i would get a variety of books. don't go for to many of one type or another. take them home and read them, take a look at the art. then go back and buy more of what you like. hey thats just what i would do if i had a bunch of money to spend at a comic shop. Good luck with your comic shopping.

Allright... Here's what I got.
Xtreme Xmen 1 and 2. I just love that coloring and art style with no inking (I can't ink for the life of me.)
Spider-Man Legend of the Spider-Clan #1. Again, rad art.
Transformers: war within #1. Too cool to pass up.
Hellboy the third Wish. Both parts. Because you recommended it and I think it looks cool.
Didn't hurt my wallet too bad, and I got to know the guy at the comic shop a little. I'm looking forward to the new Jim Lee Batman coming out at the end of this month, so that will be the next time I go in there.
xtrem xmen
spawn
bone <-- love that style
Seed
Video Girl Ai is a japanese series. It was a wonderful story with a totally great art, far away from the typical "big eyes" stuff that you guys up there are used... Well, Ghost in the Shell is another book that is kinda like a "must have" for anyone that enjoy a great title...

I would also recommend Blade of the Immortal for manga that steps away from the usual artistic trends... you can pick up the graphic novels pretty easy, I would definitley start at the beginning.
