A few weeks ago, the guy from DWP posted here looking for someone to do a three page story for his book because he didn't have enough material to fill pages.
So Nate and I whipped up a little story, and it was done within 24 hours.
But. . .
There was a problem getting the pages scanned.
So we didn't make the deadline. But the guy from DWP said he wouldn't publish it anyway because it wasn't "professionally" lettered.
So since the issue it was supposed to appear in came out this week, Nate and I thought we would share our pages with you.
They are links since the pages are fairly large. Enjoy.

And if you happened to pick up DWP #5, the story they ran instead of ours was the one with the popcorn gag.
Also, thanks to Matty for hosting these pictures for me since art-community sucks.

I can't believe you guys gave this away for free. Well, I love it and it's cool of you to share.
That title is fantastic.

"Professionally lettered?"
What, you can read it, it's coherent, hell, I didn't even catch any spelling errors! What is this "professionally lettered" ball of moose-crap? Does it have to be done in Photoshop or something?
Yeesh... another reminder of why I quit visiting Digital Webbing. Too many twits.
Guys, this rocks, seriously. Too funny and well-illustrated, I dig it. Get it in print, get some money.
professionally lettered... I got a professional letter for ya right here... think I'll give it to ya on my professional finger, as soon as I'm done using it to wipe my professional ass...
Sumsabishes. Oh well, at least it got you guys off your asses and made you produce something really damn cool.
Hitler vs. The Colonel is the best. You could almost to another 3 pages on them alone.

It was Nate's idea to post it.
I hope he wasn't kidding.
Oops.
Anyway, thanks, guys. I think we still plan on publishing it elsewhere at a later time if anyone ever wants it. I dunno.
Also, the characters here are based on a play I wrote called Satanically Delicious. But since I figure none of you guys ever saw that performed, it wouldn't hurt to exploit some of the jokes from that.
If you think Hitler is funny now, wait until you find out that he talks like Ned Flanders. "Sieg Heidily Ho, Satarino!" is his first line in the play.
P.S. Seriously. If you see DWP #5 in the stores, pick it up and look for the popcorn story. It was professionally lettered, I guess.
Also, we missed the deadline by a few hours, so I can't blame them for not running it, of course.

I flipped through DWP #5 yesterday and saw the average popcorn story. It sure was lettered beautifully.
That's all I ****ing care about from now on. Now that I have been known to letter a bit.
Lettering is the most important thing ever. **** the story and art. I don't care if your lettering is legible either; I want it done on computer as it was meant to be from 2001 on. **** comics from 2000 and prior. Spider-Man and Batman's first 40-50 years were pure ass. The lettering was SHIT.
Ok, I'm just being a wiseass. I like your story though, especially the title.

Yes, thank you, Chris, for donating a title for this story. It would have been something crappy otherwise.

Was again mister Piers you have managed to offend me by using asterisks in such a vulgar manner. I feel now that I shuold write to my congressman regarding this issue. My lawyers will contact you

Actually, I would've been surprised if this has made it into DW.
The subject, tone, and humor are fairly counter to the editorial line DW's taken in the past.
And unfortunately, the editing isn't helping the already very hit or miss content
Honestly, I'm surprised that Benito and Nate have taken their sideshow to Slave Labor or Alternative Press even Top Shelf... decent companies with promotional strength-- this stuff's their kind of flavor... seems like a missed opportunity

Yeah, Kimo, I thought the same thing, especially after I read something on their webpage about keeping their book G rated or some such nonsense.
Really we only did it because the guy seemed desperate, and we thought, "Desperation = chance for us!"
Also, if Steven Grant had reviewed that issue in his Permanent Damage column (as he is wont to do), we hoped that he would say we were the best among what he has termed the comics version of the "Not Quite Ready For Prime Time Players."
As for those other companies. . . well, as soon as there's really something to show. . .

I think DWP just felt that the hand lettering gave the story an indy feel. Like Fillerbunny and PeanutButter and Jeremy. DWP is going for a more mainstream crowed and there for are trying to go with a more professional feel. My suggestion would be to edit the text out and then redo it with Illustrator and re-submit it for a future issue. I think it would definately have a shot then.

In my opinion, taking out Nate's hand lettering and putting in computer lettering would be like cutting out the Mona Lisa's face and replacing it with a picture of an ass.
Because an ass in the right context is fine, but some things don't need an ass where a face should be.
That's all I'm saying.

I agree on that 100%, but I'm just letting you know why it wasn't let in because of the lettering. It's just not the right kind of book for it.

BTW, just wondering how many of you know that the "popcorn story" that was selected for the fill-in piece was illustrated by Ryan Ottley (who goes by the nick "uncle wya" around here)?
[edit]...and inked by Ron Riley (who goes by the nick "Imiron").

i don't care if they post here. it was drawn well, as well as inked. but it wasn't nearly as humorous as the one you guys did.
...o...k....

I love the short!!! I want more!!! More I say!!! More!!! (Great expressions. Expecially for a dead guy.)
I do agree with the lettering issues. The words sometimes run into each other.
BTW, uncle wya kicks major ass too!!

For the record, I was talking to Benito right after he learned what was going in DWP instead of his strip and while he was disappointed and felt his and Nate's pages were plenty worthy (and rightly so), he had nothing bad to say about the pages that did make it. Just wanted to be sure no one is going to misinterpret him. I mean, I have to agree with Benito that the lettering looks pretty cool for this type of story and that using the lettering as the basis to remove it is kinda lame.
I understand that DWP wants to target a certain audience and if they don't think this comic is right for them, then fine, that's totally their call. Though I have to be honest, I'm not sure who they're targeting.

The rejection of this short, which we appreciated the effort and time put in on such short notice, was not entirely due to lettering and this was explained at the time of the rejection. To come in here and state that was the sole factor shows a biased and intendly negative swipe at the ongoing efforts of Digital Webbing Presents and the books we produce under Digital Webbing Press.
The reason this was so decidely rejected was that the story did not make the deadline. We had an unexpected opening of 3 pages and short week-end deadline. When this piece was submitted it was only with one page completed and the work needed to make it printable would have pushed us beyond the deadline.
Lettering was one factor, but the deadline was the deciding factor.
Again, we appreciate the effort and feel free to submit again at a later date.

I am aware that we didn't make it in because of the deadline. I'm pretty sure I explicitly stated that at least twice in this thread.
I'm not holding any grudges. Believe me, I blame Nate.

Yeah, it's probably my fault for taking that lettering piece of the story and making a joke about it early on in the thread. Sorry.

With the focus of this thread being on the lettering, I just wanted to clarify that it wasn't just the lettering.
Thanks for being a sport about it. Hope you can find a home for that particular piece.
Best of luck.

My dreams for the past few months have mostly centered on the wish that it'd turn out College + Nate = Suck.
Thanks for proving me wrong.
And get something in print soon, please.
I like this piece. It has a nice edgy feel and a lot of sight gags. I especially like the Steve Buscimi look-a-like. But, it is definately more indy-style than what usually runs in DWP. Not to say it shouldn't have run... I persoanlly like it just fine.
Of course, I rather liked the POP! piece in DWP. Certainly had pretty art.
Then again, I might be slightly biased.
