View Full Version : I love my pencil
...o...k....
10-02-2002, 07:39 PM
Yesterday, I basically tore my room apart to look for my drawing pencil. Now, it's not just any pencil. It's a cool mechanical pencil that I bought at Office Depot for $1.75 (what a bargain!!!) two years ago. I use that pencil to draw everything. The pencil and I are like peas and carrots. When I couldn't find my pencil yesterday, I couldn't even think of drawing anything. I HAD TO HAVE MY PENCIL!!! Only when I found it did I have the confidence that I had the ability to draw anything decent. It turned out that my brother borrowed it without asking and left it out in the livingroom. ARGH!!!
Anyhow, am I alone with this problem? Am I the only one here disturbed enough to actually think his drawing utencils are his talents wrapped up in a nice package?

It's just you.
I go thru Bic mechanical pencils - the kind you get in 20 packs - at a rate of about two a week. I had a lead holder for a while, but it seemed too pretentious, and then it broke. But when I had it I treasured it.

as far as pencils go, i'll usually use anything that's closest to me. i like cheap mechanical pencils best i'd say.
but i'm usually pretty particular when it comes to ink. i like my ceramachrome pens.

No Doom, you are WRONG.
You should treat your pencil like your only love. Because your pencil IS your only love. Your pencil never judges you, it never thinks you aren't good enough, it will never turn you down.
I usually try ti keep my pencils as long as possible, the longest I've had one was like 2 years, but the rubber in the grip was decomposing and sweating oils. So, I had to put her down. I've had only 2 other pencils since then, and only because one got lost.
A lot of the time I'll get up from drawing and go into another room and leave my pencil somewhere, and I'll go insane if I can't find my pencil, I won't even start drawing again without my pencil.
And I have to have an exact kind of lead, specific density, specific brands.

Nate, my pencil tells me I suck all the time.

I've had the same two Staedtler Mars 788 lead holders, one for blue line, one for finished HB, since college.
That was in 1990.
I don't pencil with anything else.
So, yes, ...o...k..., I understand what you're talking about. And it's not that I think my talents, per se, are wrapped up in my lead holders, but some of the best work I've ever done has been with those lead holders. They've held up quite well over the years.

damn you guys are weird... the pencil doesn't bring your art out; you bring the art out of the graphite. It's a tool (like me!)

I have a lead holder that I like with plenty of leads but... mostly I love working with a certain mechanical pencil.
It's a Koh-i-noor rapidomatic .5 mm. White. Just like one of my favorite artists in the world uses. I have three so that if I can't find one, I can find the other. There's usually two at my art table and the third one tends to stay near me or whatever I have that's important (bills, keys, etc.)

oh gosh I'm such a two timing pencil b!tch. I have a few 0.5 mechanical pencils that I love but I switch between them and now my store bought in a new one (I was there when the pen salesperson was talking and showing new stuff for our store manager and sweet talked my way into us getting that pencil.) It's a Pentel Graph1000 PG1005 and it's like it's not even there in my hand when I draw with it! I flippin' LOVE that pencil. It has won an award for best design (perfectly understandable - it's neat) but it's the way it feels in my hand ...it's like ...ooo, you know. Not like THAT "ooo" but you know...ooo!
I love it to bits and prolly have to get an extra one just in case I lose the first one...which I pray will never happen but with my spontaneous senelity attacks setting in, you just never know.
My new love.

I end up breaking my pencils all the time. I hate them... they hate me. I go through cheap mechanical ones like... toilet paper. Shaddup, I couldn't think of anything.... bah.
Now my prisma colors. I better damn well have every one put back in the same spot and everytime I open that box they all better be there. I felt like crying once when I got a brand new box at college and almost all were shattered all the way through. That was a bad day.
I LOVE my blue animation pencils.... I miss those.

I prefer to draw with the same thing, rather than a different pencil each time, but it doesn't have to be the same one...I have 2 mars lead holders. If I lost them, no big deal, I'll just get another mars lead holder.
I can't stand those white rapidograph pencils. I made the mistake of actually using the eraser...it instantly lodged itself in the barrel...what a useless piece of crap!

I don't really care what pencils I use, and I often break them, i don't take good care of my stuff. I have no loyalty any certain drawing instrument I own, there all the same to me, i use them till they die and buy new ones. I've never had an appreciation for the tools of the trade, I don't know, to me its more my hand that I worry about.
but given a choice I use sakura microns and regualr #2 pencils best.

I have too many pencils to single em out, like 20, most frm a different value. But if I would go with only one Id go with my Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 HB. It never lets me down, its not too hard, not too soft, not too dark, not too light. I almost feel like Goldi-locks.
I just hate it when they get too short and you cant get yor kung-fu grip on it.
Maybe I should invest in a pencil holder.
I also have one of those old elementary school sharpeners attached to my wall to get the perfect point every time. I dont trust those other "portable" ones.
and as for eraser I use a kneaded one. It gets into every knook and cranny and it never wastes!
DrVictorVonDoom
10-03-2002, 06:05 PM
If there's one tool I can't do without, it's a kneaded eraser. I use a blueline pencil a lot now, but I can manage without one. Without a kneaded eraser, my stuff looks even worse than usual.

I used to be that way back when I used to use mechanical pencils. But now that I used the standard wood pencils... a pencil's a pencil... pretty disposable.

hey, try the zebra m-301.
they are cheap and they are awsome. i think about 3 buck for 2 of them and you can find them everywhere!
latter.
Weird. When I was about 13 or so, I had this big heavy mechanical pencil I stole from my dad. For some reason, I drew cool stuff with it, and if I used anything else, my drawings turned out like crap.
Magical pencils don't come along everyday, but when they do, whoa momma.

I use those Golf pencils that I steal when I go play a round. Heck there free an when they blunt just get more, stock up, they are free. I jest... Any thing with lead in it will do, even the cloth I use to clean off the lead after sharpening. Hell even lead on my fingers will do in a pinch.:D i have a very light touch so to further complicate things I use H lead in my drafting pencils. Then I end up gouging the paper and Getting frustrated, then kick the wife and punt the pooch.:D All kidding aside I buy those real cheap pencils that come 50 to a pack and cost like 5 bucks. I aint particular. I just need to get stuff done, can't be held up by Superstitious nonsense. Someayas sound like those baseball players who have to go through a specific procedure every time they go to bat. Superstitious nonsense I say.

I really draw with anything I have around. I've inked alot of things with ballpoint pens and whiteboard markers I've "borrowed" from school.
As long as it gets the job done, right?
When I draw I have three main pencils that I use religiously: one is a Pentel Sharplet - 2 0.5mm mechanical pencil. I like it because it is very lightwight and stays sharp so I can do my fine detailing. Then I have a Koh-i-noor Rapidomatic 0.3mm that I use for really fine detailing when i need to get into those really small areas and the 5 wont work. And last but not least I use a Kimberly 5H pencil when I have to do fill in work. They are dirt cheap and dark enough to do the job yet light enough that if I smear the lead, it wont really show. For an eraser I like to use a Helix Vinyl eraser so it doesnt tear up my EON boards. I used to use Pink Pearls, but theyd tear a whole through my paper really quick. I went through many an EON board with those...:(

I must have "borrowed" 5 reams of paper last year. I don't have a special majic pencil. I lose more pencils than i can think of.I can go througe a pack of ten in a week.(i'm a very disoraganized person.) What really pisses me of is when i can't find any pencils but i can find 3 tubes of lead or vice versa. I currently have 15 empty(15!) pencils in my bag and i can't find any damn lead!
You guys are funny, its no wonder why I like coming here so much. Anyways yeah, I have a lead pencil attachment like that but not to one particular mechanical pencil. Its more like to lead pencils with .03 lead. If I somehow manage not to have one on hand, I won't want to draw as much. I can't stand the lack of detail with .05 or larger lead. Blue pencils are alright though.

I have a harem.
A long, long time ago, I used to only religiously use the blue .5 Pentel clicker, back when they were almost the ONLY mechanical pencils around and came in the nifty colors of Blue and Brown. I'd have to get a new one every couple of years though because eventually the small metal tip would loosen and go back inside the plastic tip like a turtle puttin its head back in its shell. Bothered me, cuz I liked my pencils to be pretty.
Now, I have a harem. Each pencil has its purpose, has its own lead. And I just bought one of these awesome mechanical pencils that have a hardness gauge where you can set it up to read 'H' or whatever hardness lead is inside, so I never have to worry what type of lead is in the pencil. I also bought a lead holder after watching AH!'s little video. I wanted to see why he liked his so. Me and that one fight a little, cuz she's a little fatter than the others and she can't take my insensitivity about it sometimes. So in all, I have about 5-6 pencils hanging around me at all times when I'm drawing.
And I've used those clicker eraser's as long as I've been using mechanical pencils. They're always clean and NEVER rip the page. I love them so and also have a harem of them as well. I dunno why, I guess so the pencils feel they have a chance to get some action I suppose.

Up until last year, I had been using the same pencil I had since high school (probably 7-9 years). Then I lost it at a con. Months later I found out that it wound up in my friend's pencil box somehow, and she's not good at differenciating people's property. I don't have the heart to tell her that she accidentally stole my pencil.
Anyway, they stopped making that particular design. There's one that's very similar, but it has a rubber grip, which I'm not overly fond of, but I've gotten used to it.

What are you trying to win a popularity contest among the psychobehavioral-thievery community???? You're "friend" is a "kleptomaniac" who walked all over you and jacked your pencil!!! Now you are using crappier pencils and have convinced yourself that it's okay and you'll get used to it!!!??? Crapola on that, man!!! Take back the damn pencil!!! And I wouldn't allow her into my damn home with any pockets, containers, pencil boxes or big freakin' purses for the rest of my damn life until she seeks some bloody help!!!
"Hey, ya jerkoff... that's my damn pencil!!! I've been looking for it since the con!!! Did you jack my freakin' pencil??? You need help you sick bastard!!!"
Maybe something in that area could help your friend to admitting she has a problem!
"Accidentally" stole your... huh...? Oh geez... sorry... I haven't had my coffee yet this morning...
but I promise you I'd go get my damn pencil back...

First of all, my friend isn't a kleptomaniac (and I'm pretty insulted that you would refer to her as such). We used to live together, and we shared a lot of stuff, and sometimes, the lines of ownership got kind of fuzzy. I keep a pretty good handle on what belongs to me, but she and our other roommate weren't as good at keeping track. My guess would be that I lost my pencil at some point, and she probably found it lying around on the ground or something, and picked it up.

Not as grey of an area for me as it is for you, but alright let's try this solution then... if you have such a hard time sticking up for yourself, get one of those things you use to burn writing into wood and stuff (what are those things called?) and label or mark your pencil! Then these honest mistakes will stop occuring and you can hang on to your property.
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to pick on you... I'm just awed that after 9 years of pencil attachment you would see it in the other individuals box and say nothing! If it was an honest mistake there should be no problem... seems there is more to this story is all...
