I think the Gaijin studios guys pound for pound are the best american bg artists right now...Lee Bermejo draws the **** out of backgrounds too. But he's crazy

Katsuhiro Otomo

Edward Risso...you don't have to draw the keyholes to every door in the picture to draw awesome backrounds...if you're talking effective backgrounds as in they friggin add to the mood, story, character, and texture of a scene then this guy is god

Oooh, I forgot about Ladronn. His art in that Hip Flask issue rocked. . .

Yeah, my wrist cramped up just looking at that. I'm glad I get to look at it but not draw it.

Talent Caldwell did some Turner backgrounds but I find it hard to believe that he has done every background from Witchblade to Fathom. Hell, Turner started as a background artist too, I believe. That's how most guys get there start in Top Cow from what I understand.

John hold that check until thursday, it'll clear then.

Darrow is totally the man.

i think Eric Canete does some damn cool stuff with backgrounds as well.

if i'm not mistaken, Maleev frequently uses photocopy transferring, and old printmaking trick. It looks nice, though, so i won't bitch, but it's more in the category of Hitch's tracing photos.

EJ Su has been known to blow my mind frequently, as well. So has Cory Walker.

Yeah, Maleev uses Photoshop to make photo collage-type backgrounds. Nifty, but (like Hitch's stuff) it doesn't really count in my book.

Bergese's backgrounds are ALWAYS splendid.

Gazotti's backgrounds are quite impressive. Few people can top his drawing abilities.

But only one artist can be called 'BG king' :
Phillippe Franq (he draws Largo Winch)

and you should see his buildings...
