View Full Version : Lack of industry imagination is making my comic shop boring!

Looking through the shelves of my local comic shop I quickly became aware that nearly a quarter of all the titles on offer seemed to feature some kind of medeival or samarui swordsman.

Many of the others were devoted to some kind of teenage superteam made up of misfits and social rejects.

How many of those damn comics can the industry pump out!?

Its annoying that as soon as a particular subject gets a bit of public interest it's drowned by a neverending succession of imitations and clones.

Surely there are some people out there with fresh ideas?

I don't want to see any more swordsmen, teenage supergroups or wolverine wannabes!!!

you know, you criminals can always try investing in something called a "real life".

.........that said, it doesn't stop the artists on these boards producing page after page of swordsmen.........................

10 minutes until 5pm and I'm off home.
Can't wait to get out of the office.
Beer is calling me.................

What would YOU know about a real life?

You're so dependant on these boards that you have to post pictures and narration every time you blow your nose. ;)

Perhaps your fixation with a 'real life' could be turned inwards and directed at your 'inner self'.
I know you're in touch with your feminine side, but perhaps you should look further?

Anyway, I'll have you know that, when I'm allowed outside (under armed guard and accompanied by attack dogs), I very nearly have a life. It doesn't matter that I'm shackled to a fat guy weilding a huge night stick.

Life's what you make it, and all that........................ :D

I know what you mean.
It's not like I got $$ for comics these days anyway.
My suggestion to you is to buy Battle Pope. It's most certainly one of a kind comic. That or Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, or the old Lobo's are always good.

either that or stick with the traditional titles which were the originals, like, Batman or Spiderman, Spawn etc.

There are alot of titles that are hidden in boxes that we just don't know about. I'm anxious to get to the comic shop today.

???
comics=life, life=comics
right?

I'm pretty spoiled where I am, any time though I've traveled out of NY, the comic shops sucked.

There are plenty of writers and artists with fresh ideas out there, you just have to be out looking for them.

The four best examples of comics that are doing a great job of showing just how diverse the future of the industry can be are Y: The Last Man, Pop Gun War, Powers and Louie Riel. Do yourself a favour and check them all out, if you aren't reading them already.

I second the Powers thing. Really different take on the superhero genre.

Also like:
League of Extrordinary Gentlemen

Transmetropolitan (sniff, I miss me some Spider)

The Filth is pretty good so far

And anything with Nazis. Nazi books rawk. Buy any Nazi books you see.

Well, I think the current fantasy sword-swinging boom can largely be assigned to the influx of manga and to the succes of Maduriera's Battle Chasers. He really kicked off a genre revival, there...

Superheroes will continue to rule the shelves for a long time... it's just the way it is.

There is a slowly increaing trend towards new and different material though, or at least twists on the old themes. I think as long as titles like 100 Bullets are selling well, we can expect to see more of them emerging.

I will also miss Transmetropolitan... I'm still awaiting the final issue.

look at the positive side of this ..if you were an up and coming creator this is great. if you have a new/unique or different idea.
it gives you more spot light and more respect of innovation or branching out.

Yeah . . . ::sobs::

Anyone who hasn't read any Transmet, go pick up some trades now. It's your duty.

i trucked through the first few years of transmet before realizing it wasn't for me...if memory serves, ellis strung together a ton of random wacky/disturbing things, robertson's art just wasn't as appealing as his stuff on, say, new warriors, and the best thing about the book were the covers by jae lee (and that only lasted 3 issues :P )

but that's my opinion ;) they made for decent reads, but looking back, i really should have spent my money on something i enjoyed a lot more (or put it in savings so i could buy textbooks now *sob* )
