I had no interest in this movie when it came out . I never read the book and the trailers were pretty bad ("*COUNT* on Revenge!")
........but it's a good revenge flick.
I liked Edmond Dantes' transformation from this innocent kid to a hardened, calculating bastard (that can kick anyone's ass). Reminded me of Batman.
Jim Caviezel as Bruce Wayne ?

Now just think about all the different stories, where the lead character goes back to wherever looking for revenge from someone in his past...This was the original, or at least original in that most people are using it as a reference....I forgot what I was trying to say...
I liked the movie. I've never really cared for Jim Cavaziel's acting, but he came off nicely in this movie! I loved the look of this movie. it had the feel of most other "period" pieces set around this time, but...not.
I actually have to say that the two people in the movie that I usually like the most (Guy Pierce and Luis Guzman), I thought were under used and less developed.
Worth a rental, I'd say. :)

yeah, I got a bunch of my boys and dragged them out to watch this one in the theatre. I loved the story and the sets and how he pimped so damned hard. I honestly thought it was Antonio Banderas on the poster, though.
pfft! They aired the French TV version series last year with Depardieu in the lead role. It was excellent and anything else would surely suck monkey butt.

I just thought the recent film had some great lines...
"There are 75,943 stones in the walls... I've counted them many times..."
"Yes, but have you named them yet?"

Nahhh... too generic. How about:
"Why are you doing this"
"Well, because we are very bad men... and we need the money."

I saw it and I liked it. You really have to let yourself just enjoy watching a movie to truely appreciate this one. Don't sit there and say "well that couldn't really happen" and don't be thinking about anything that you need to get done and it is a great movie. Also if you liked this rent "The Musketeer" (not the disney one)

Lord no....
I can see Monte Cristo being good, but the Musketeer....
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite stories ever... By the way I myself saw all the movies (from the very first - still black and white - till the last one)... Ah, and I also read the book and I even have the comic book (that was publshed a long ago during the 80's)...

Ok I didn't say that the Musketeer was "good." I just said that you might like it. For sheer entertainment purposes. The fight scenes are sooooooo extra-ordinary that you just get amused at it. ...never mind forget the Musketeer!

The book is amazing. Definitely one of the top three novels I've ever read.
The movie sucked, compared to the book. In fact, so did the other US movie adaptation I've seen.
I really, really want to get the French version - something would have to be that long to catch the complexities which make the book so great. But it's damn expensive.

I hated the book.
I hated the movie too. (Except for the cinematography)
