This show seems to have some things too similar to that of outlaw star.
first of all there's a naked girl in a box. Does that sound familiar?
Second, it ivolves space travel...
third, the main character is a gun toting bastard.???
and there's a hooker invovled... ok that doesn't really fit into anything. But if you think about it, That Ayesha clan clan woman had the goods. :D
I really am not looking forward to this series.

what the hell is Outlaw Star?

It's an anime series. Showed on Cartoon Network (still is, I think?).

Um, those are fairly generic points you've got there, dude. Except for the "naked girl in a box," your "similarities" could apply to any number of shows/movies.
It's Joss Whedon, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I maybe wrong, but until you see it I think you should withhold judgement.

Buffy the vampire slayer was gay and I've got no doubts in my mind that this will be gay as well.
Joss Whedon who, is all I've got to say.

I actually watched Outlaw Star all the way through when it first started out on Cartoon Network...
I'm taping Firefly tomorrow night when it premieres... we'll see what's up then. I probably won't get to actually watch it for a day or so though...

I'm with Ink, I have to tape it tonight because Friday is "get trashed day"
I really hope this takes off (no pun) in light of Farscape's demise. I'm tired of hoping Andromeda, Enterprise, or any sci-fi originals will get any better.
Who knows, Firefly looks expensive. If it doesn't go over, maybe Fox will have an open slot of Farscape. :(

well, after seeing the first episode, i can honestly say that I don't give a rat's ass what it is 'ripped off' from... this kicked butt. The guy playing 'Jane' needs to pull in the reigns a little bit, but otherwise pretty solid stuff.
what clinched it for me was towards the end, when the bad guy's lackey was telling the crew how he would track them down no matter how far they ran. I thought it was kinda setting him up to me the antagonist who is always on their tail, hounding them wherever they went. then the captain did what he did... ! bwa hahahaha... don't think i've laughed so hard at a tv show in a while.
besides, i'm sure that Outlaw Star wasn't the first to feature 'space travel' or a character who is a 'gun-toting bastard'.

And here I thought this thread was ribbing on one of the greatest spies to ever grace the ranks of Cobra.

red7ine: why isn't a "girl in a box" on you'r list?
I'll admit that those other two are not really the greatest reasons for why I think that the show is not orignal.
I just can't get over that obvious rip from outlaw star.

I was about to say, I saw no nekkid girls in no boxes...
Personally, I dig that show. I'm a huge fan of westerns, espescially spaghetti westerns, and I love sci-fi... this show makes no bones about being determined to revise as many western stereotypes as possbile in this sci-fi universe.
I thought most of the characters were pretty entertaining... the guy who plays Captain Malcolm defintley has a flair for subtle tones in his voice and good attitude for the character.
Plus that last bit with the engine intake (not to spoil it for anyone, it's too damn cool) just took me completely by surprise. It's wasn't something I expected, but it was perfect for the moment... it's exactly what you wish a million other heroes would do when threatened in a similar situation. I liked it so much that I rewound and watched it twice.
John Doe was pretty interesting as well... we'll see where that one is going. Certainly an interesting concept...

What girl in a box? is this something i missed in the previews or did I blink for a second and not see it in this episode? That's why it's not on my list.... i didn't see nothing of the sort. Also, as I've never seen Outlaw Star, i wouldn't have made the connection anyway.
did you watch the episode? if so what did you honestly think?

Yeah, honestly I didn;t see any of the elements that were mentioned at the beginning of the thread...
No naked girl in a tube...
The main character draws his gun only once, I think... and there was nothing special about it, ala Gene's "Caster"... just a pistol like everyone else's...
Okay, it takes place in space... but then so do most sci-fi shows at SOME point.
Are you guys sure you saw Firefly and not something else?

I'm gonna have to agree with the 'not ripping off OS' because frankly, if the thread hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have mande the connection. The shipt doesn't battle hand to hand quasi-mech style in space, there's no little kid or blade carrying spookie warrior chick. There are similarities but I think that's about it. You could probably relate this to a lot of other sci-fi and get the same parallels.
As to the show itself, I think I missed the first 2 minutes but I was pretty impressed. I thought it'd be more about SFX, and I'm glad I was wrong. I will be watching this and hope that 10 episodes into it they haven't starting repeating themselves.

The whole "Naked girl in a box" thing was in the commercials. They even said "Naked girl in a box", right after "space prostitute". If it was not in the show, I will sue those bastards for false advertising. And then I will kill thier fish.

Red7ine... You honestly didn't hear the words "naked girl in a box"???? It was in every ****ing preview!!! They even showed a shot of it.
...god damn man....
Just because it's not in the first ****ing episode doesn't mean that it's not going to be in the series.
I say this with the best of wishes dude. Pull your head out of your ignorant ass?! :D

Fellas relax. I doubt Joss even knows what Outlaw Star is. Also we are comic fans, cartoon fans, movies fans etc. we are also mostly artists and creative people. We see similar ideas and concepts that other, "normal" people do not. It's not ripping off anything, (save for a video game idea I had once, joss is a bastard) it's just that we know too much. Therefore nothing new can be shown to us. We're jaded

Both of you shut the heck up before someone gets all Moddy on the two of you. It is just a damn TV show...
Anyhow, I and most of my friends think the show has got some potential... it won't replace Farscape, but it's nice to know I'll still have something cool to watch when I stumble home on a Friday night.

I never saw Farscape. I heard mixed things. HAS to be better than Earth:Final Conflict. That show went from "Eh" to "Ugh" real quick.
Enterprise is allright. Can't get me enough Vulcan boobie.
