View Full Version : Spirited Away, as in Disney spirited away a great movie

I HATE Disney, and I used to love them.
They buy the American distrubution for Miyazaki's new masterpiece "Spirited Away" and decide to only show it in "select" cities in the coming months. Select as in maybe ten cities, tops. What a bunch of bullshit. I wonder if it's a coincidence that Spirited Away, which looks amazing, is being played down as they start to advertise their own new movie "Treasure Planet", which is scheduled to come out in November. Normally I wouldn't care about these kind of things, but I live in South Florida and the closest Spirited Away is getting to my home town is Atlanta, Georgia, which is over 15 hours away by car.
Think I'm nuts? How many of you guys have even seen a commercial for Spirited Away- even heard of it? Blargh.
Sorry, I had to vent a little bit.

Was this movie going to be in every theatre if Disney hadn't bought it? No. Don't be so grouchy.

I live in Devil, TExas. WHere we KNOW that everything is the devil, and we get to see underground movies like this because we're also the 4th largest city in the world.
Of course, just because i have this opportunity, does'nt mean I'm going to take it. Why the hell would I want to see this film?

I saw the commercial a couple of times here, but only because they are advertising on network television. I live in Santa Rosa and there's no way I'm going to get to see it here. It would never come here. They did a special screening at Pixar in Emeryville, which is roughly 2 hours away from me.
I know it's hard to understand the way large corporations like Disney think. The average American is not going to understand Miyazaki's work. It's just not going to happen. We Americans like things like Monsters Inc. and Lilo and Stitch. When it comes to animation, Americans don't want to get deep and look for messages and morals. We like cute and cuddly and funny. The general thought is that cartoons are meant to be funny. That's why movies like Toy Story succeed, while movies like Iron Giant fail.
Disney knows a wide release of this film will make them nothing, but a limited release will get people like you, and me, driving an hour or so to the nearest large city to see this film. It would be nice to hope that word of mouth would spread on this film and, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, everyone and their mother would want to see it, forcing Disney to open it in more theaters.
It would be nice.
It is going to be very difficult for me to see this film, but I am going to try. I want to see it on a big screen.
