View Full Version : So the new Superman movie is finally being made (confirmed)

If you don't want to know any details, I guess you should just skip this thread. But this info is all confirmed from reliable sources like Variety.

Ready? So, the director is Brett Ratner (Rush Hour movies, Family Man, Red Dragon) and the script is by J.J. Abrams (Alias). Supposedly it's a fantastic script that details Superman's story from Krypton to present day, working at the Daily Planet, much like the original Superman but with today's continuity and special effects. Apparently this script was so good, Warner Bros. put it on the fast track and scrapped the Batman/Superman movie they were thinking of and hired director Rattner right away (moving aside director McG who had been tapped to helm the Superman movie but was taking it slowly - he's busy and WB wants this movie out as soon as possible).

And Superman? Well, it's 90% confirmed that he will be played by Reeves. No, not George or Christopher, but Keanu. For real. Hope he's up to it!

Thoughts?

You should be a writer....

You had me with the Reeves thing. I was like NO WAY!! And then you hit me with the "Whoa!" :)

I think sounds like it could be cool...Although, I would think that Neo...er I mean Keanu would not want to be another "superhero, 'the one'-ish kind of hero" in another movie...and so close with the other Mtrix flicks coming out.

Although, since the MAtrix's are also made by WB...means lotsa a money for them.

*BTW, I'm very interested in seeing how Red Dragon turns out!*

.. not Keanu "Am I braindead?" Reeves. That empty stare in his eyes. I mean, Superman -of all people- is supposed to be charismatic, right?

Whatever happened to auditions?

Who would you guys cast as Super Man?

Hey Clark!!!........WHoooooa

Superman help!!!!!.............Whoooooa

I just Mr.Noe can do a better job with Superman,Than George Clooney did with Batman.

I dunno Clooney might have been good as Batman if it weren't for the dumbed down script.

You've gotta admit even if he bulked up, Keanu Reaves would have the wrong body shape for Superman.

I hope what you say about the script is true. Lately, it's been sounding like they've only been wanting to do an outlandish type of Superman flick to kick off their new franchise (like "Superman vs. Lobo," or even the Doomsday thing). If they really are starting from Square One, then they're already on the right track in my book.

As for the Keanu thing. . . I don't buy it. Even Hollywood Execs aren't that stupid.

Cowblaster, I swear to god, you'll start hearing this on Entertainment Tonight and stuff like that soon enough. This is totally on the level. Warner Bros. execs are VERY happy with Keanu's work in the Matrix movies.

Keanu has delivered some of the worst acting performances in popular movies of all-time....we can only hope they look somewhere else.

I could quite easily believe that Keanu Reeves is a being 'from another planet'.

For one thing, his acting ability is totally inhuman..................

Lois Lane: Superman, there's a meteor heading straight for Metropolis!

Superman: [looks at her for a moment] EXCELLENT! [Plays air guitar]

Lois Lane: No, you don't understand, if you don't stop the meteor, were all going to die!

Superman: [frowns] BOGUS!

:D

Hey you never know maybe he can pull it off.I think that either he can make it work or it will go very badly. He will have add some weight to be the Big S.I'll just wait and see

No, no... Will Smith. Guaranteed big box office, man.

Colonel Kurtz

Will Smith wouldn't be bad and they could open it on 4th of July weekend which is Big Willy Weekend. Maybe he could do his Ali impression opossite Gene Hackman. And get Chris Reeve to do a cameo where they insert his head with the help of CGI onto the body of Richard Pryor.... Nah the studio would never have the balls for such an ambitious film.

But an even better choice (that actually could be made) would be Michael Pollard. Yeah he's a bit old but once you place that mental image of him in the suit can you ever imagine anyone else? I first fell in love with his work in classic Star Trek episode called Mira. And who could forget his amazing work in the Andy Griffith Show as Cousin Virgil.

You people realize that if there had been "the internet" back in 1978, this was exactly the same thing people would've been saying about Christopher Reeve....well, maybe not the bad acting part...Same goes for Michael Keaton.

And Bill & TEd was over 13 years ago...THAT comparison should no longer apply....

BTW, I'm not defending Keanu, but I'm just saying that for the most part, whenever anyone is cast as a comicbook character (hell, any character from any work of fiction) there is always an outcry on how horrible that decision is! *well, except for the case of Picard as Prof.X and Famke Janson as Jean Grey. :)*

As for who I WOULD cast as Supes, I liked the idea of Jude Law playing him.

Superman should be played by a no name actor with no previous movie career...

Now lex luthor is a different story...get the big bad guy russian from the first highlander movie...he's big imposing and can actually act..not that highlander proved that but still...the guys freaking creepy and unnerving as hell...

Rey de las Cabras

although I would like to see an aging disgruntled superman played by Bill Murray just for laughs...opposite sean connery as the Dark Knight Returns angsty batman...

I read on a few of the Superman web pages that Brendan Fraser has been approached for the part, and I think he would be good.

This was lately, also. But I believe the Keanu thing could be real.

HMG
09-14-2002, 05:44 PM
Fraser would be good I think and maybe even Bill Campbell, but they would both have to bulk up.

I second the idea of an unknown actor playing supes.

Keanu Reeves is not going to play Superman!

According to Superhero Hype! (www.superherohype.com), director Brett Ratner has debunked the rumor that Keanu Reeves is up for the role of Superman! Woo!

So, there!

Also, they report that Anthony Hopkins may land the role of Jor-El.

Just for the record, Cowblaster, I'm not some lame rumor-monger. The Keanu info came from Variety which is usually very reliable. The actual wording they used was "tapped" which usually means in negotiations. I know for a fact that Keanu was who the studio wants but Rattner probably gets the final say.

...o...k....

Keanu would have to stay away from horses.

Colonel Kurtz

I like Anthony Hopkins but I think they should just get Marlon Brando to play the part.

Chris Piers
09-14-2002, 11:12 PM
But... we've already seen Brando do Jor-El. I don't see the need to repeat that, especially when you have the equally talented but probably less-cuckoo Hopkins onboard (and I love Brando, but come on. He's on red kryptonite or something).

Wonder what direction they'll go when it comes to the soundtrack...I hope they go the classical route because it worked well last time and I really don't wanna hear anymore rock songs written with the word "Superman" or "Hero" screamed over and over. And please for gods sake no Macy Gray.

TWoods

I think it would be cool to see an all CG or animated version and make supes look just like the Kingdom Come Version. But if they are going with an actor they need to make it look as close to the KC version as possible. Remember the guy that played Flash Gordon?

jharker
09-15-2002, 07:01 AM
For some reason I can picture that guy who plays papa Kent on Smallville in the Superman costume...

But that would just be strange.

I just hope J.J. Abrams' script is really as good as they say, I have yet to see something I like from that guy.

Officially, Nicolas Cage got tired of waiting and opted out of his contract, since it looked like his Superman movie would never be made.

Not to mention, I don't think anyone really wanted to see him play the role.

This is an excerpt from an article by the The Chicago Sun Times; (http://www.suntimes.com/output/movies/cst-ftr-super17.html)

It's time to get the blue tights out of mothballs. It's up, up and away for a new, big-budget "Superman" film.

"This is the movie Hollywood has been trying to make for the last seven years," says confident director Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour"), who will call the shots in a new Metropolis.

Let's get right to the question that's like kryptonite: Who will play Superman? "Nicolas Cage really wanted to do it for years, but he's too old now," Ratner says. "To be honest, I want a total unknown in the tights."

As for the story, Ratner's going back to the beginning. "It will be the origins story with a fantastic script that explains more than you've ever seen before," he says.

Since Christopher Reeve's first outing as "Superman" in 1978 did a good job in that department, what can Ratner bring to the party?

"That movie was made over a decade ago," he says. "It was good, but the studio didn't have the technology that we have now. Can you imagine a really good 'Superman' in 2003 with all new special effects? I think that could be something amazing."

The article also mentions how the supposed Batman/Superman movie is being scrapped for this movie (which I believe is a good thing). So far, it's sounding like a really good project.
