I'd like to play.....can anyone briefly familiarize me with how things go here? The rules seemed a little vague to me.

Basicly, you either challenge someone specific or come up with a character(s) you would like to do and others will hop on.
What kind of draw-off did you have in mind?
You also set any other stipulations. Deadline... backgrounds... pencils only or inks...
Once the deadline comes the art that is turned in on time gets put into the Arena with a poll for voting. It's a lot more laid back than it is elsewhere.

well...it doesn't really matter to me....I'd just like to have some fun, are you interested 'Bovey?
dfbovey
09-10-2002, 11:59 AM
Maybe, depends on the subject matter.
Ncyte77Etern

what interests you 'Bovey? I've seen you do quite a bit of superhero stuff....I'm more "make-it-up" shall we say....

You mean a design your own character type thing?
Ncyte77Etern
09-10-2002, 12:06 PM
Indeed.

I wouldn't mind a draw-off like that as long as we are both drawing something that is set so there can be an even comparison. Like a basic description can be given of the character, and we come up with the design.
I also wouldn't mind doing an Iron Fist draw off.

Although, I don't usually like just a static "design your own", one guy in the pic deal, I usually would pick a subject....(example: assassin chik), then i would draw her in an interesting pose and setting. Basically, a full scale pinup, usually with backgrounds or even other elements. Did I explain it okay? It sounds plain and boring, but It's cool to me, because I can go wild and so can the opponent.
Ncyte77Etern
09-10-2002, 12:14 PM
I'd have to think about Iron Fist.....
dfbovey
09-10-2002, 12:19 PM
Yeah, I would want to make it a full on pin-up as well, with backgrounds and all. I'm with you there!
As for subject matter... How about a War Mage? A magician that specializes his or her magic for use on the battlefield...

Bio for Iron fist from Marvel.com

He's a cool, but underused Marvel character.

Actually, the "War Mage" kinda sounds really cool.....another reason why I like competing this way, is if someone comes up with something I've never even thought of, it challenges me...and vice versa. I'm with the "War Mage"...never done that...you're into gaming aren't ya?
dfbovey
09-10-2002, 12:38 PM
War Mage it is!
Yeah, I'm an ultra competetive person. Everything in the pin-up section of my website are things I've done for draw-offs here. I'm an ex-jock, so I guess that's left over from my days of playing sports. :)
We just have to some of the other rules like due date and materials used to finalize.
I'm moving this weekend and have a bunch of other stuff going on, so how does Saturday the 21st by midnight sound to you?
Pencils only?
Do you want to let others in on this or is it just gonna be you and me?
Ncyte77Etern
09-10-2002, 12:50 PM
I don't mind one on one or whatever...doesn't matter to me. Pencils only is great. How about the 23rd instead at midnight? Working out some things (pieces in progress)...I don't want to debut subpar. Cool?
dfbovey
09-10-2002, 01:01 PM
Cool with me, when you get your's done post the link in this thread and I will do the same. I'll post up the voting thread in the arena on the 23rd with both pics at the same time.
Good Luck, should be fun!
anyone else want in on this?

Guess it's just me and you 'Bovey.
dfbovey
09-11-2002, 03:58 PM
That's cool with me :)
I probably won't start mine until Monday.
Ncyte77Etern

I may start mine soon...depends on my mood...could use some rest....
Got a question (Can I call you Dave?).
I'd like to know how you approach shading....and what type of pencil do you use?
dfbovey
09-11-2002, 05:53 PM
Yeah man, Dave is fine.
I hear ya on the rest thing! I've been wiped out the past few weeks.
I use the side of a 2h drafting pencil to fill in the black areas and a standard hb drafting pencil for the line work and hatching. I spot the solid black areas first (trying to keep a consistant light source) and then feather lines out from the solid black areas to transition from the dark to light areas. That's pretty much how I approach it. How about you?
Ncyte77Etern
09-12-2002, 02:54 PM
interesting....I use an hb lead all the time...the difference for me is the size of the lead. I draw with a mechanical/drafting pencil and for most of the drawing I use the pencil with a .03mm lead. After the picture is nearly complete, I drop accents and heavy shades with the pencil with a .05mm lead.
kinda weird.

I used to draw with nothing but mechanical pencils, but I prefer the line width variation you can get with a standard wooden pencil nowadays.

i don't like sharpening my pencil:)
dfbovey

I keep 5-6 sharpened pencils by my side so I don't have to sharpen as much, I know what you mean though :)

This sounds kinda interesting, and with almost a week to make deadline, I'll try and turn something in if that's okay?

Sorry David, I'm really tied up with homework from work and now the tournament, I'm not going to be able to get a piece done for this. Sorry for making you feel used, but whatever could have turned in wouldn't have stood a chance next to your piece.

dfbovey,
Nice work on your drawing.I didn't catch this thread early enought to enter or else I would have submited something.:(
I also read your interested in drawing Iron Fist.Let me know if you still interested in the future in a draw off using this character.
dfbovey
09-27-2002, 04:57 PM
Thanks Vegeta,
I would definately like to do an Iron Fist draw off in the future. It will be a few weeks before I could even think about it though. So I'll have to get back to you when I have the time If you want to wait.
As for this draw-off, I officially withdrawl my work from it. Sorry, but I've never been involved with a draw off that's fallen flat on it's face like this before. I totally feel like I wasted my time.

Sorry about that Dave, i had a draw off against him in DW and never heard from him, i'm lucky i only did half of mine before i realised.

I'm not going to bad mouth the guy too much. I still turned out a fairly good piece that I'm happy with. So I guess it wasn't totally for nothing.
I am admittedly a bit pissed though. I'm a busy guy myself and I took the time to do this, when the guy who made the challenge doesn't even bother to show up. I've been involved in roughly 20 draw-offs here (maybe more) and this is the first time I've ever been stood up.
He would have gotten squashed like a bug anyways ;)
