View Full Version : "Art" "jam"--Who's interested?

BenitoCereno
08-30-2002, 07:30 PM
So Exiter's post of the page Matt and he did for the first combined effort comic story (back before they were called "art jams" because art jams were something else entirely), I started to get the urge to do another one. I know other people have tried this to no avail, but I just want to see if maybe we can generate some interest on this one. If people are interested, I will write a script for it.

However, I am more than familiar with the fate of this type of thing: it gets started and never finished. I seriously want to finish one, even if that means it has to be black and white, or some people do multiple pages, if it's two pages long, whatever.

So let me know if you're interested, and further, what kind of story you'd be interested in. I don't know what kind of story I might do yet, but I'm open to suggestions.

I expect to see replies from Chris, Doom, Deforge, Matty, Randy, anyone else who considers me a friend, and artists who are good and aren't currently working on a more pressing (i.e., to be published) assignment.

Thanks. I look forward to your replies, even if I have to stick this thread to get them.

I'll pencil a page. Just keep it at 6-8 pages if you can, these things are hard to organize beyond that. And make it something you like so that it's interesting, like a few of the Technet busting someone out of a penal colony or robbing a space bank.

Do whatever but as far as your question goes, "yeah, I'd be interested in doing pencils on a page of an art jam."

DeForgeo

I'll pencil and ink a page if you want, but it'll take a bajillion years.

So you've been warned.

penciljack

I'll consider doing a page, once I see the script ;)

I feel badly that the last attempt at this never seemed to get off the ground. So let's start out simple. Benito's writing the script, so let's just deal with pencils right now. Once we have all the pages pencilled, then we'll recruit inkers, etc. I think that could end up maximizing the participation...

I'll pencil a page.

And I've just finished reading the Hellboy tpb, the Right Hand of Doom, and it occurred to me how cool it is. Let's do a Hellboy story, or if nothing else, a story in that genre.

Chris Piers
08-30-2002, 09:06 PM
Heartily seconded as I've also been reading through the Hellboy TPBs lately (and there's a lot more of them than I realized... my poor wallet).

Exiter

if you do hellboy I'll be happy to pencil a page

uhhh sometime at the end of october

BenitoCereno
08-31-2002, 12:50 AM
Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeet. I can definitely do something in the Hellboy genre. Werewolves, vampires, ghosts, something of that nature. As for Hellboy himself, well, I've only read Seed of Destruction and Third Wish, so I'll see how much justice I can do him.

Damn. I didn't expect to get Terry and Kevin. Yeah, this will rule.

So I'll be busting out my Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits to find something good.

In the meantime, I'll save the Kylun story I dreamed up earlier tonight for some other time.

OH EM GEE

Okay, it's on now. These are the pencilers I will take, and I will write a story 8 pages long, as there are eight pencilers.

For the record, the pencilers are (as of today, but potentially subject to change):

1) Deforge
2) Chris Piers
3) Penciljack
4) Inkdrop
5) Exiter (whom I doubt would be the only one finishing at the end of October)
6) Steampunk
7) red7ine
8) shinolahead

I'm going to try my damnedest to write a Hellboy story.

And Matt, I almost considered using kappas in the story, just because they're funny and cool. But I think I'll go with something else.

Heh - Yessir, kappa seem very cool. I was reading about them in my big book of mythology and that quote just stuck out as funny.

"BLAAAAAH! We are kappa. We come from the dark water to drink your BLOOD! AAAHHHHHHH...what's that? you got cucumbers?
Well, consider yourself safe...........................for now."

Just sounded so Monty Python.

DUDE! You gotsta let me in this one PLEEZ!
I'll gladly pencil a page. I could even ink and color one if its neccessary.

Add me to the list man, I've been itchinf for an ArtJam for a while now.

BTW, when can we expect the script?
And is 8 pages enough to capture a gripping hellboy story? <--(thats me just trying to squeeze in more pencilers)

BenitoCereno
09-03-2002, 11:54 PM
Grr. Okay. How about I write two scripts, and we'll have two going simultaneously? I'm currently working on Hellboy (no kappas, but there should be plenty of zombies), and I'll send it to the first group of folks as soon as it's finished.

But I also have an idea for a somewhat wackier story involving Kylun and Widget, which would have dimension-hopping, weird looking aliens, and sword-fighting. If those of you who didn't get in the first round want a crack at that, say so. I'd really like to work with some of you guys who've piped up since the first list.

Keep in mind, I'm going to need inkers, colorists, and letterers too, eventually.

Benito, these things don't have a very high completion rate. Let's try to do one at a time. Anyone who didn't get in on this one can get involved in the next one, or can be listed as "alternates" in case one or some of us can't finish a page, etc. Anyway, I think we'll have better luck if we approach it one at a time. And probably a better finished product, too.

Spidey
09-04-2002, 11:04 AM
I agree, if you cant get us in the first one for penciliers we'll just wait for the second (in which we get dibs on pencils right?).

Since I wont be penciling you can put me down as a colorist.

I'd like to comment on the art jam that fell apart, we had a script and the characters and I never got one page from anyone. After a while I stopped getting responses from people via email. The last post was actually CWMax's rendition of the characters.

I wish this jam the best of luck, it looks like it may have more star power than the last one.

And no, the one we had didn't end up on HT.com, we're still trying to flesh out a new one, although it looks fun if we can get it going. Had I seen this one earlier I'd have tried to jump on it.

Well, I don't really want to mail my actual page away, so how were you planning on having inkers do their pages, Benito? Are there any inkers capable of printing pencils out on bristol boards or something? I mean, inking on a piece of printing paper doesn't work so well.

yeah, same deal...i'm sharing a website with a buddy, but i'm sure he wouldn't mind 8 pages of comic stuff ;) (that would be the case if i put the finished result up...if there's a *need* to have all of the in progress bits and pieces, i still *might* be able to do it, but no promises)

For the record, here's what's done.

Spidey's page is penciled and inked and in the hands of the colorist.

DeForge's page is penciled, inked, colored, and lettered. Finished, in other words. It looks great. I hope all the pages look this good.

Chris's page is penciled and in the hands of the inker.

Last I knew, Inkdrop's page was in the layout stages. Any updates? Also, do you need an inker, or are you inking yourself?

Penciljack's page is going to be an excused tardy. I believe he's inking himself, but I can line someone up if not.

Steampunk's page is penciled, and the inker has half, and now that I'm back online, I can send the other half as soon as the inker or the inker's wacky friend contacts me.

red7ine's page is. . . I have no idea.

Shinolahead's page is penciled, and I think he is inking it himself.

Exiter's page has been laid out, but I think Kevin's been scratching himself since that point. I believe he's working on providing his own inker.

For people I haven't heard from, I need to hear from you so I know how many more inkers I need to line up, and how many colorists I need.

sorry to keep you in the dark buddy. I have one panel left to draw, the big one at the bottom. I would say I am 80% there. Sorry for the delay, but I've been working on my tourney entry also. You WILL have it by this weekend, this ... I SWEAR!

Hmm. Let's see if I can do this off the top of my head.

DeForge's page: done done and done.

Spidey's page is penciled and inked and now colored.

Chris's page is penciled and still in the hands of the inker.

Inkdrop's page is penciled, inked, and colored, and as soon as I get a high res version, it's going on to be lettered.

Penciljack's page is going to be an excused tardy.

Steampunk's page is penciled, and in the hands of the inker.

red7ine's page is being penciled.

Shinolahead's page is penciled, and I think he is inking it himself.

Exiter's page is lost?

::cough::other inkers::cough::

Chris Piers

Yeah, someone's had about twenty days to ink my page which should probably only take between 2 and 4 hours tops.

Spidey
10-01-2002, 12:22 PM
I inked mine in 2-4 hours. :)

Steampunk
10-01-2002, 03:13 PM
chris, i'm not sure how you can say a page *shouldn't* take more than 2-4 hours...obviously i haven't seen the page, but not everybody is super speedy...

unless the page is 7/8ths white space, then it would probably take me a couple hours just to lightbox a page onto my bristol, let alone ink it after that...

as for the other pages needing to be inked...argh, i'd like to take a crack at it, but i hate doing the whole lightbox thing...i wouldn't mind experimenting with printing blue lines onto a sheet of bristol board, but i'm not sure how well that would work either...

is there any chance i can see the page needing inks before i agree? to be clear, i'm heading into midterms, so i doubt i'll be able to whip it up in a day or two, let alone a few hours...actual drawing/painting projects and trying to catch up on the first month of school that i didn't have textbooks will certainly get in my way, but i'll be as speedy as can be...if i think i could do anything with the page anyways ;)

Chris Piers
10-01-2002, 03:42 PM
You've got a point, Randy, if there are more steps involved. I was thinking of inking off the actual board which of course the inker doesn't have access to. I had made a point of keeping the linework as clean as possible for my inker. I still don't think it should take three full weeks though.

BenitoCereno
10-01-2002, 07:04 PM
Chris' page is now inked and being sent to the colorist.

Matt's page is "almost done being inked."

Steampunk
10-02-2002, 12:16 AM
it seems i'll be inking vaught's page, if all goes well at kinko's

also, the thought crossed my mind that *painting* a page (because, i'm photoshop stupid) would be interesting...if i'm uncharacteristically fast (which this whole blueline dealie might help) with my inks, and there's still pages to be coloured, i might volunteer for some watercoloury goodness :) (or at least an attempt...perhaps a backup would be smart hehe)

well, yesterday after i finished my psych midterm (yes, that's right, rather than go home and relax after such a stressful {har} situation, i got straight to work on this little jam, aren't you proud? ;) )

so yeah, i spent about an hour waiting for the guy to print this stupid file...it's not like they were busy, i walked straight in and he started on my printing, but for whatever reason, it took him forever...first off, it was showing up too light on the screen, and he adjusted it so that it would show up better, but he made it so dark that some of the areas were almost black (partly my fault, i really didn't do the conversion to blue lines properly AT ALL :'( )

also, he apparently couldn't print onto my bristol board, so we used paper from the store, which, feeling right now, is EXACTLY the same thickness...argh! the only difference is how smooth this paper is, but i guess it's taking the ink well...however, brushes simply DO NOT work on the blue ink...damnit!!!

whatever, i finished about a quarter of the page last night, and will get my ass in gear again tonight, hopefully finish off another panel :)

sooooo, is it possible for me to colour a page, or are those all taken? terry's will be a while, so by the time it gets to the colouring stage, my plate should be cleared...how 'bout it? huh? HUH?
