When I first saw dan's, I thought this was going to be an easy win for him. But after really enjoying the scroll through on RR's, I'm not so sure.

Great job, fellas.

Dan had the nicer drawing, but when you look at it, Reggie has the more fully realized story and did really pay attention to using the panels to tell a story. I can see thought in the camera angle planning and stuff like that. I think his sequentials have achieved their goal more effectively.

I just got back from a busy weekend and its great to see the poll up already,

Reggie; great work with your peice, sequentials always add another dimension to the competition.

After some thinking voted for Dan here.

voted Reggie

facial expressions on the first panel of each page are subtle gold

also bOObs on the stairs = win

rendering of figures had lot to be desired; but hey he's an LW

pacing was good though

Dan...
figures are a lot better rendered; especially Sonya on Panel 1 (great job: nice subtle... solid, anatomically accurate)
but the "story" didn't really go any where
and the creature doesn't look very menacing...

Honestly I feel bad for it... like it's just some plant eater that's going to get slaughtered for looking strange
poor thing.

Tough one, but in the end went with Reggie's storytelling.

Since when are we voting on "story"?...

Vote on the merits of the artwork.

:/

"story" IS part of the merits of the "artwork"

that's why it is comix

I really enjoyed both of these entries! I love some of Reggie's panels (Page 2, panel 3 is my fave) but went with Dan for the nice shading and more solid anatomy. Great work guys!

You both brought some great stuff. I am very impressed by Reggie's sequentials. They are not drawn and finished as well as Dann's but they definitely tell a great visual story with no words! You "get it" man. But on the other hand Dann's drawings are cool, and it is such a tease, i am dying to see the next page!

I will sit on this for a few hours

I can't in good conscience vote for Reggie's sequentials, because they look 90% scribbled. No offense to you, Reggie, if you put a lot of hard work and effort into your pages, it just doesn't look like you did.

Voted for Dan. <--- That's Dan 3000, not Dann. Two different people who get confused by people here quite often.

Thanks Pops....I was starting to think I drew something I didn't remember drawing.

And Whune....this is an Art Competition....
that's like saying a Rob Liefeld book would be fantastic looking if Neil Gaiman was writing it.

I think this is the first time I've voted against Dan! o.O And the only reason is that I want to know what happens next! It feels incomplete... like there was another page but it didn't make it.

Reggie got my vote for storytelling.

I did spend alot of time on this but take no offense to that comment because there are really only a couple panels that i'm happy with, and sequential work isn't really in my comfort zone so things were rushed for time. And thanks to everyone else who's commented so far everyone has had some pretty cool things to say.

um... no... it's not.

It's like saying that conveyance of story superseds draftsmanship.
Which it does.

but that's all beyond the point.

This is post where we are to say what we like and don't like about a piece.
This is not a post where we are supposed to argue about what criteria other people should vote by.

This does really come down storytelling vs. art, and although I love a good story, but I would have to go with Dan on this for the technical skill he brought. That said, I am loving Reggie's story!

I like both of these a lot and like it when both competitors decide to bring panels to their monthly competition! I'm impressed with Reggie trying to do some storytelling (and, in the main, succeeding!) and going outside of his comfort zone to do so. However I've gotta go back to the idea that PUMMEL is an art competition and I feel that Dan3K has the better art in this one, so he got my vote this time around.

Nice job to both!

I know we have gone rounds on this before, and I do see what you folks are talking about. I, personally, disagree. I didn't join an art forum, I joined a comic forum (At least in my mind). I feel that drawing is a skill, but storytelling is the talent. We work on our drawing skills here, absolutely. That said, being able to make that art say something is important to me. Had Dan done a pinup, I would have gone for him, as it looks like a misfired sequential to me, I went with the complete story; Reggie.

I am torn over this. Dan3000 chose to submit sequentials, which implies there's a story to be told. As we can see, however, there really isn't much story there. Reggie did submit a superior story, no question. The fact remains, however, this is visual storytelling. If the visuals aren't adding to the story, they're detracting from it. Dan3000's visuals do nothing to detract from what little story is there, and they're kinda nice to boot. If I were to vote for Reggie based solely on the story, then by that same logic I would have to vote Reggie down for someone else who submitted 20 pages of incredible story, with terrible art (not saying your art is terrible here, Reggie, but in this case I see quantity first). My vote goes to Dan3000.

I see your point ...I really do. And seeing that I do sequentials almost everyday. I know that storytelling is important, and an artform in itself.
What I'm disagreeing with is that if someone is doing panels, they shouldn't be expected to be a writer too. Dan3000's story was only a page long and pretty simple with no real ending (or beginning), but why does that matter? It's the art we're trying to improve here. We did a sequentials challenge almost a year ago for stuff like that.
I really liked Reggie's story...it was cool, whimsical..all that stuff. But the artwork in Dan's was just , in my opinion, better this time around.

I see your point about not being required to be a writer, that's a valid point. :) I hadn't considered that. I'll need to think that one over. I think I still disagree, but I'd rather not take away from Dan and Reggie's fight. Let's continue this later! :D

I remember a PRM that Marcelino and myself had (Captain America was the subject), that offered up a similar debate. I did sequentials and Marcelino did a fantastic Pin-up. I had lots of positive remarks made towards my storytelling, but someone (I forget who) said "Nice storytelling, but not one single panel is drawn as well as Marcelino's pic" or words to that effect. And its a comment that I absolutely agree with, both then and now.

I voted Reggie due to the varied angles, attempts at perspective, and more pronounced breasts...

Good work dan polls not closed but i'm pretty sure you got me on this. Good luck man and we prolly won't be fighting again until we're both mids (unless you lose next month and we have to do this all over again but my moneys on you being the next to rank up.)
