Weekly Sketch Group #244

Welcome to another Weekly Sketch Group! I'll be your fill-in moderator while Manji is is away. FYI ANYBODY can join the sketch group at ANY time, so why don't you sharpen that pencil and join in :)!? If you have any ideas for future topics you'd like to see in the sketch group PM me the details and I will use them in a future installment!

And now on to our topics for this week:

1. The Plutonian versus Max Damage: Draw either one or both of the Boom-studios characters (and check out Irredeemable and Incorruptible)

2. Modernize Zeus: What would the father of the Greek gods look like in 2012?

3. Original Concept or Character:

by Favorite-N

Faur (pronounced "Far")

In the distant future mankind has turned to genetic engineering to combat a robotic menace. But humans were unable to agree on the methods of genetic engineering to defeat the robot menace and branched off into three seperate sects of genetic engineering. One are the Newmans which can be seen (here). and the one for todays subject are known as Huminals. The general practice of this group was to incorporate animal traits into the human genome to make them, faster, stronger, better in whatever way they thought would best defeat the robots.

Faur is a female Huminal. She has a very lanky body with long limbs and terrifying claws. Her face is very cat like but not round smush face cat, there should be a nice narrowness to her face as it connects to her back as if she isn't meant to be standing erect even though she does. Her hair is fairly short and splotchy all over; a light yellow main fur coat with scattered browns and orange circles that populate her fur. While she should look like she could rip through metal there should be something disturbingly sexy about her. Most likely in the way she posses her body.

Besides the basic enhancements of strength, speed, agility, sight, smell and audio, Faur's major enhancement comes from her extreme speed when running on all fours which she uses to pounce and tear through unsuspecting victims. She is also able to climb up virtually any terrain despite the incline or slickness.

And there you have it guys `n gals. Keep your pencils sharp and have a great week!

Never actually read these books, despite being a Waid fan. I need to pick them up. But my reading list is a mile long.

@killingyouguy: Great job on that Plutonian vs. Max Damage illustration! Lots of drama!

Here's a quick one of the Plutonian and Max Damage squaring off from me to keep things chugging along this week:

Let the record show that I had this original sketch done up in time to be the first post yesterday:

But I enjoyed it so much I had to take things a little further. A modern day Zeus would be the worst kind of womanizer:
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k65/HydeKomiksInk/pjwsg244zues2.jpg
I envisioned his suit being a very dark gray/blue with lighter blue rim highlights. But when I was done, I think the sketch would have looked better had I just blackened it in?

Do my eyes cheat me, Sean, or your Zeus really bears resemblance to your Sean-avatar? :-) Cool stuff, mate, your first one is even better.
Dan3000, that is really cool, you really captured that struggle. Grats.
Hydekomiksink, your Zeus pic is awesome.
I like the colours and the mood, killingyouguy.

@Einar: Thanks! Yep, probably a bit of the old icon in that Zeus ;)! I get sloppy when I'm drawing at 100mph!
@gbeef: Nice job on that Plutonian vs. Max Damage sketch! Good sense of drama and action!

And here is one of the original character this week, Favorite-N's Faur:

curious on the cat drawing for sean..how do you get your color applied? it is so smooth and seamless...can't be watercolor or colored pencil..do you work in digital media?

I draw the lines with pencils and pens and then scan it. Then I use a program called GIMP to color whatever I have drawn. This time around I used some gradient coloring from a tan-yellow color towards white, like a leopard. Usually I do the cell-shading sort of thing. GIMP is a free program and there's a bit of a learning curve, but if I can figure it out, I'm convinced anybody can ;)! It has about 99% of the same features as a much more expensive program like Photoshop has. Can't beat free :D!

Thanks for the question, cmurphy8560, and welcome to PencilJack! If you would like to join the sketch group it is open to any PencilJack member at any time!

@fatmancomics: Nice job on your Plutonian vs. Max Damage sketches!

Hi, here is a modern-day Zeus, bored at the computer:

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/035/7/a/21st_century_zeus_by_colleen80-d4olzo6.jpg

The paper accidently folded in the middle, so that's why there's a slight crease.
