Weekly Sketch Group #243

Welcome to another installment of the Weekly Sketch Group. Manji, the creator of the weekly sketch group, is still out looking for the magic pencil of Dilrond (+3 vs. Nerds), so I will continue to fill in for him until he gets his mojo back. If you have any ideas for a topic you would like to see in a future sketch group, PM me the details and I'll endeavor to include it in a future installment! Anybody can join the weekly sketch group, just pick one of the topics below, sketch it, and post it up in this thread for everyone to admire!

And now, (drum roll please) this weeks topics:

1. The Taskmaster: Evil Drill Sergeant of newbie supervillains

2. Rogue: Hot X-babe with the Skunk-hairdo

3: Original Character or Concept:

By: AaronWilderComics

The Silver Spider

The concept behind the character is pretty simple: a kid sidekick loses his mentor, but instead of growing up and assuming the mantle he turns vigilante.

For design, here's the basics.

SS was an acrobat type, like Robin. He's not a muscle guy like the Punisher, but wiry like Spider-Man or Invincible. He carries two silver guns with silver spiders inlaid black grips. The feel should be like a gunfighter or an old pulp hero - black duster maybe, or a black coat. The face should start out like the classic Robin bolo mask or Invincible's mask, but warped into something covering the face with a spider-like design (maybe the body of the spider covers the mouth with legs wrapping around). Rest of the costume is artist's choice, as well as the hair.

Think if Dick Grayson grew up to become the Punisher instead of Nightwing.

And there you have it, my fellow Sketch Groupers, sharpen those pencils and look sharp!

Ditch - That is an AWESOME design for the mask!
Marooney - Task Master and Cap.... that's why you're my hero... :)
GirDoggy - I really tried to work the spider's legs into the eyes of a mask, but none of mine were even half as cool as yours. And that high contrast hood with the spider is spot on. Great work and Great sketch.

These topics are so much fun, and my sketches are really working for me. I'll have no problem getting all 3 this week. Here's Rogue in all her 80's glory:

Got my Task Master piece started last night while participating in a little Geeks Who Drink trivia challenge at Brewforia. Fun stuff. My own version of drink and draw night includes my team taking third place in a trivia contest. Hopefully get this finished up before the end of the week.

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Adam Masterman again." Very cool Silver Spider, I really enjoy the viewers angle on the piece.

Amazing sketch, gbeef. Simple but really effective, everything is in place.

I complained about my drawings not being clean enough and vyper referenced Bruce Trimm as an example on how two make a great result while minimising the lines used, so here's an attempt on my Rogue from yesterday :-)

Thanks for the kind words guys,
Im learning as i go... getting the smack down on learning male anatomy. One day i'll join in on the pummble weigh-in

Einar i really like your first rouge attempt. If you wanted a cleaner line ive been told to death to sharpen that pencil. Don't draw dull. ( i have a bad habit also i just started to this). you can layin dull but finish sharp. but then again this is a SKETCH of the week.

good stuff

Thanks, Anthony! I had fun sketching this one out!

@Loston: Awesome Taskmaster illustration! Nice job!

Thanks, Man! The original Taskmaster is one of my favorite Marvel villains, so I knew I had to do something for this week's WSG. He really is quite the slave driver.

And here's a quick Rogue from me in a Bruce Timm style to finish off the week:

You know, I don't really get a lot of the Timm animated style vibe out of this piece. I know you mentioned on your sketch blog that you felt weird trying to draw like another artist. Keep in mind that every artist who every drew the BATMAN ADVENTURES, SUPERMAN ADVENTURES, JUSTICE LEAGUE ADVENTURES and BATMAN BEYOND books had to learn to draw this way to match the style of the cartoons, but they all did their own thing with it also. Think of it as trying to keep on-model with the look of the show. Don't think of it as you trying to draw like Bruce Timm. Timm was NOT the only designer on those shows. Dozens of artist did character designs in that style, including Shane Glines, Kevin Nolan, Darwyn Cooke, etc. Also remember that the girls were based on designs that derived from Tex Avery animated characters like Red Hot Ryding Hood, and the art of guys like Dan DeCarlo who drew BETTY AND VERONICA forever. Timm didn't draw in this style either, prior to the show. He helped create the style, and he still draws this way today, but I can remember when he was drawing HE-MAN figures, back in the day. Quite a different look for his work back then.

Finally, if you ever decide to draw a character this way again, I recommend that you take a look at some model sheets linked below that go over some basic theories. I hope these will prove helpful to you:

Hey Guys,

gbeef, Thanks for the kind words. I feel the need for the sharper pencil as you said. I already went over to mechanical pencils, but I still miss the a real sharp edge. I am on B .5mm now, but gonna try HB 0.35mm. What do you guys think?

Loston, you really hit it with that Taskmaster. Plus the ref sheets and the comments on Sean's Rogue are useful to me as well.

I quite like that Rogue Sean, I should have done something similar and stayed closer to my usual practice when tried the line simplification - a smaller step might have worked better for me.

@Loston: Thanks for the great response, Loston! I appreciate you telling me about all those other artists having to adapt to that Animated-style on those various comics! I never knew that there were so many other designers behind the look of the DC animated universe stuff. I'm also a fan of Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier stuff, and admire the deceptive simplicity in his illustrations. Many thanks too for the partial list of other artists that were influences upon Bruce Timm and others, I'm going to have to look into their work! And many thanks for the links to the reference pictures, I've enjoyed looking at them!

@Einar: Thanks for the feedback!

@Justin_A: Nice job on that Rogue drawing!
