Weekly Sketch Group #241
Welcome to the second sketch group of 2012! The Sketch Group was en fuego last week, and I hope we can continue that trend, so if you want to sketch one of the topics below, please do! Anybody can join the sketch group, why not you? If you have any topics you'd like to see in a future sketch group, PM me the details and I will endeavor to use it in the near future!
And now, on to this week's Topics:
1. Hawkeye: Clint Barton, the Avenger's Archer extraordinaire!
2. Bastila Shan: Female Jedi from Knights of the Old Republic (best videogame ever ;)).
3. Original Character or Concept:
by Tudore
Harpy and Panther
Have you ever seen a housecat eat a bird? Baby-eyed, fluff ball is just a couple feet in front of you, nearly unhinging its jaw, struggling to swallow. The bird, chirping not minutes ago, is tightly sandwiched between its own wings, slowly disappears…
“… a child, pale and weak. No one will say one of their own should die to save one of ours. They will come in the night, with stones, and torches. We who have lived long will do this final service; traitors of our covenant, the thieves, the murderers, shall protect that covenant with their flesh.”
The elder negotiated her way to the ground, hands wound tight round her cane, tucking gnarled legs underneath her, sheltered from the light wind by the wings of her neighbors. Eyes lit by campfire followed her down, and then met the new speaker as she rose.
“And that’s exactly why we can’t accept. I will never concede that they intend to keep their oath, but even if all but ten of them are faithful, those ten will come with spear and flame, and snatch our young from their beds. ”
Several pairs of eyes flitted furtively to their respective huts in the camp. Most were discrete, but some stretched their necks long.
“How can we prevent them from withdrawing from agreement altogether? We cannot. We are left only to trust in their good intentions, and if we assent now, future generations will gradually cease to question the state of affairs. We will passively decline, until they determine our numbers are manageable, and our progeny will be damned to eternal subservience.”
The eavesdropper awaited the final decision, and once it was announced, slinked out of the village, making sure the arrows of his quiver did not rattle as he moved. Once out of sight, he drew his back straight, and broke into an outright gallop across the field, long stalks yielding to a streak of sable.
[There is an Earth-like planet that has two species with human-level intelligence: one herbivorous, one carnivorous, both at the Paleolithic level of civilization. The carnivores will always need to eat some percentage of the herbivorous population to survive. They've eaten anywhere from a small percentage (2%) to over-half (80%) of the population in previous generations. Now, the carnivores are offering a treaty: they'll agree to only eat a fixed percentage of the population, provided the herbivores present the victims without resistance.
I’ve cycled through a number of anthropomorphic pairings: harpies and panthers here, diplodocuses and velociraptors at other times. Insectoid or cephalopod type carnivores could make the horror of the attacks more visceral: horseback parties of mantises, or cuttlefish pillaging towns.]
And there you have it my fellow Sketch Group Peeps! Sharpen those pencils and start sketchin'!
