Weekly Sketch Group #240
Welcome to the first sketch group of 2012! I'll be your continuing host while Manji is away taking care of business. Anybody is welcome to join the Weekly Sketch Group, just pick a topic, draw it, and post it up for everyone to admire. PM me if you have a topic you'd like to see in a future installment!
And now onto this week's topics:
1. The Thing: The ever loving, blue-eyed, Ben Grimm! For bonus points draw the rest of the Fantastic Four too ;)!
2. Princess Zelda: Sure, everone draws Link, but what about the object of his desire?
3: Original Character or Concept:
by Shaun
DIAMONDHIDE is the bruising superhero defending Marlowe City, CA. When Atticus Ross’ recombinant DNA is activated he is able to produce a thick, rocky skin with shards of quartz-like diamond jutting out of his body,[URL="http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m577/ShotgunShaun/Reference%20Pics/lasercrystals1.jpg"].
I’m picturing him similar in body size and proportions to this guy, [URL="http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m577/ShotgunShaun/Reference%20Pics/ice_army.jpg"], with the same broad chest and spikey appendages on his upper arm and back, which in this case would be the crystalline diamonds referenced above. Ignore the face in the reference pic, Diamondhide’s face should be fairly human so we can still make out his emotions. Only it will be rocky, similar to the Thing.
In addition to his incredible strength and durability he can also control the density and shaping of his diamond shards so he likes to create large diamond fists, similar to this - [URL="http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m577/ShotgunShaun/Reference%20Pics/141853-85689-holocaust_large.jpg "]. One might even have claws coming out, at your discretion.
And there you have it drawing dudes and dudettes! Sharpen those pencils and keep sketching!

I'm pretty sure Shaun won the last round of writing contests over in the writing thread (good story too). As a reward, I think we should all draw his character. :D

For those who missed it, here is the recent preliminary drawing I did of the Thing. Yeah, it might look like a finished drawing, but I blew this up and transferred it to 11x17" bristol, and added in a whole bunch of floating heads to the final illustration. The final piece is being drawn for Brokenhill. This first draft was drawn and inked on copy paper with a pencil & a Pitt brushpen. I'm happy with how it turned out. :)

@Dri: Heh. I've never seen Ben sitting perched like that, but it's a visually interesting pose. I really like the large head shot, man! I think that's excellent!
@gbeef: Really nice Princess Zelda! I really like the pose, the line work and the attitude! Nice Ben Grimm too! Looks like you had fun drawing these, eh?
@brokenhill: I think you make Ben a lot wider than I'm used to seeing him, but you keep drawing him better every time you sketch him, Steve. You're making great progress.
@guntherzero: I dig the pose, Ross--but it looks sort of like Ben was carrying something in his left hand---a football, perhaps? Nice foreshortening on the right arm!
@Diesel: Cool, Aaron! I haven't used colored pencils in years. What paper are you using?
@scmarooney: I'm diggin' Diamondhide! He reminds me of a Dale Keown style '90s action figure, or someone from the 1980s THE SAGA OF CRYSTAR comics. Your Ben Grimm is monstrous in size. His physique reminds me of Sasquatch from Alpha Flight, Iron Clad from the U-foes, or even Nimrod, from the X-MEN. He looks like he is a super-sized Grimm!
@Jeloshi: I really dig the close-up (complete with cigar!)! Why did you color him red instead of orange though, might I ask?
@Zippy: Hey, that's pretty good, man! You might want to make his nose look a little less human and slightly more stylized. If you widen his brow a bit, that will also help. The figure is pretty good. I like the proportions. :)

Thanks for the feedback, Loston! I like drawing the original characters almost as much as I like drawing the established ones! That Thing drawing needs a much bigger head ;)!

Thanks gbeef!
@Loston: Funny Ben Grimm `toon! The sign really sells the gag :)!
@Zippy: Nice job on that Thing sketch!
And here's a quick Princess Zelda warmup sketch to keep things chugging along this week:

It's great to see WSG awake again after the holidays, lots of nice stuff guys.
Justin_A, that's just a total hit - I also wanted to mess the old John Carpenter stuff in, but had no concept good enough; yours is rocking.
Love all those Things, glad to see Sean going for the animated style again, Loston's bum Thingy and brokenhill's massive, enormous giant, just to mention a few.
I am gonna back up Sean and gbeef's Zelda with another lil princess:

@Justin_A: Very creative and a funny/cool version of the "Thing", nice job!
@Einar: Nice job on your Zelda drawing!
@Nick: Like the Zelda sketch! I haven't played a Zelda game myself since the 90's...
@Bach2099: Nice job on the Thing and his new FF sweater!
And here's another try at Diamonhide, slightly less bulked up, and doing the superhero thing:

Great pictures everyone. Here is my take on the Thing. I am definitely rusty. I was thinking of drawing ghost Princess Zelda since I am currently playing Spirit Tracks, but I chose the Thing instead. I added some computer colors in the Gimp to make it presentable.
P.S. I changed hosting recently, let me know if the image doesn't show up.

Man I am soooo lame. I had these last week and never scanned or posted them. And even more lame that I didn't complete a good Diamond Hide:
