Weekly Sketch Group #236

Season's Greetings and welcome to another installment of the PencilJack Weekly Sketch Group! I'll be your fill-in Host again this week while Manji is tuning up Santa's Sleigh for the big night. Any PJ member can join the sketch group at ANY time, just pick one of the topics below, draw it, and post it up for everyone to admire! If you have any ideas for topics for future sketch groups just PM me the details and I will try to include them in the near future!

And now, on to this week's Topics:

1. Daredevil: The man without fear!

2. Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop

3. Original Character or Concept:

by Favorite N:

Ooutopoh (Eww-ah-Ta-Poe)

At the outer rim of the galaxy there is a race of beings known as the Vernash. Residence of the planet Verna, the Vernash are sentient beings born from what they call the sacred sap. A gelatinous goo that seeps from a large twisted tree they call the Tree of Life. From the sacred sap portions of the gelatinous mass form into a single consciousness capable of cooperating in the Vernash society built on the ideal of advancement and cooperation above all else. Generally the Vernash do not spend enough time to construct their appearance into anything but a mobile mass of gel like substance but some will try and imitate life around them. Generally you can see the internal organic systems through their thin translucent membrane and their internal system usually has a certain colorful glow much like a jellyfish.

Ooutopoh is a Vernash who is a member of their peoples Arbitration class and in the case of the story he is an ambassador to Earth and humans. Because of this he has a very empathetic connection to the people of Earth because they share a common calamity that their home world had been destroyed or in Earth's case is in the process of being destroyed by another alien race. Ooutopoh has taken on human characteristics with a bipedal form. Human shaped head and limbs. His skin is translucent so you should be able to see his internal system. No bones but more like the veins and arteries pulsing through his skin. He will be wearing a sash across his chest much like a roman toga but not so bulky and it should be very vibrant in green and blue coloring. No hair. He should be a bit moist and drippy like a fish out of water.

And there you have it my fellow Sketch Group Peeps, sharpen those pencils and look sharp!

I guess I'll get things started off this week with some really crappy DareDevil sketches. I haven't drawn him much. He's not really one of my favorite characters. And everytime I've tried drawing him I've struggles. Guess I'll have to try harder this week

ScMarooney - I love how you included the tree, and made him look 'drippy'. I couldn't figure out how to pull that off. I am also loving the way you included his brain. That is awesome!

lol that's the most extravagant jump-roping I've ever seen.

I love the torso though - the abdomen is still a weak area for me - and the feel of the musculature in general.

sure:
the arms and forearms both seem a little short to me.
elbow is supposed to be about level with bottom of rib cage
wrist is supposted to be about level with bottom of crotch

The hands have issues

you've got her bicep going over her detoid
or if that is supposed to be a faint indication of Pectoralis major... then it should be going down instead of up
if its suposed to just be a flesh crease then bicep would still be under it rather than over it; and in general it would have less volume.
also even if it was her pec it still be under the deltoid; if it was even apparent at all.

in general she has way too much meat on her to an anime girl but it doesn't look like you were trying to draw her in her native style.

nose looks like a bruiser's

neck she is really straining it; which seems odd given the pose.
The only way I'd see the neck like that is if she had really heavy thing in her right hand and was slinging it around in front of her.

Yea, guess it's pretty shoddy huh. Been trying to get anatomy down without
references, but I just can't seem to get realistic angles/poses,
and on the digital side, well, gosh I just struggled with the tool (gimp)

Oh Well....will keep on trying.

Thanks

no reference as in no actual study of human form ever..? or no ref for a particular pic?

The first is pretty much impossible as far as I know.
The latter is very possible once you've memorized at least the basic proportions and some surface landmarks.

getting good poses down will come with understanding of the form itself

Well, I'm pretty sure this is just a lack of
talent issue, because I've been studying the female
anatomy pretty intently since I was around 13,
and i still can't put it down on paper.
Haha.

if there's one thing I've noticed about learning anything... it's got very little to do with how much time you invest and a lot more to do with how you invest that time. (what resources you are using to learn; and how thorough and systematic your studying is.

@WS0: No problems on the Daredevil illo, nice job!
@Einar: Nice job on the Daredevil, challenging pose!
@HunterGreen: Nice job on the Faye drawing(s)
@ChrisMcJ: Nice job on the Daredevil sketch cards!

Great job to everyone who participated in WSG#236 this last week. Hope to see you ALL in WSG#237, which I will get posted up, ASAP!

And just an FYI, Manji originally established the Sketch Group to get PJ members drawing, without worrying too much about crits or anything like that. If anybody wants a crit on anything posted here, feel free to use the Finished Work or Sketch forums near the top of the main-page :)! It has the effect of upping your post count and attracting new members to the WSG too ;)!

:-) It was not meant to be rope jumping, it just turned out that way. And I missed the English expression of rope jumping from my dictionary... Thanks!
