Weekly Sketch Group #222:
Welcome to Weekly Sketch Group #222, even backwards it's #222! Heck, I can't say that one for another 10 sketch groups ;)! Word to Manji the Moderator's mother for letting me run the sketch group in his absence! If you want to participate in the Weekly Sketch group JUST DO IT! (hope I don't have to pay Nike, Inc. for that :rolleyes:). That's right, just draw one of the topics below and post it up for everyone to see! If you have any amazingly innovative and intelligent ideas for future sketch group topics just PM the current moderator (ie: ME) and I will include them in a future installment of the sketch group.
And now, with no further ado, here are this week's fantabulous topics:
1. The Deadliest Enemies of Invincible (Conquest, the Viltrumites, Rampage, the Reani-men, Kursk, Angstrom Levy, Omnipotus, etc., etc., so MANY good ones ;)!)
2. Warhammer 40K: Draw anything from the truly enormous Warhammer 40,000 mythos.
3. An Original Character or Concept:
By Shaun
Hero is the warrior-champion of the Mordari, a race of intelligent Meerkats, surviving in the sun-choked expanse of an endless desert world.
Standing a foot tall, Hero can reason and speak. He dresses like an African Bedouin with a snug fitting, white linen shirt and trousers. He wears a simple belt with an animal bladder for carrying liquid and a small blade. Hero wears chunky tribal jewelry - all as means of spiritual protection. His main weapon is a 2-foot narrow staff tipped with a scorpion stinger equaling roughly half his height. Hero’s face is straight, angular and all white except for a black nose and black patches around his eyes and ears.
Hero has trained since birth to battle the colossal beast, Bevrob, terrorizer of the Mordari since time immemorial. All who gaze upon Bevrob are turned to stone so Hero has ritualistically removed his eyes and replaced them with shimmering diamonds. Steadfast in his Gods and his cunning the blind warrior must defeat Bevrob’s thuggery or see his race perish under a heartless desert sun.
And there you have it, my fellow sketch-group peeps, sharpen those pencils and start sketchin'!

This is just the best time to return to WSG! - WH40k:-)

Great choices, Sean! However there are still 3 days away from my scanner...

Straight goodness this week scmarooney! I have a mad love for the Invincible cast and have to start with and old pic I did. When they originally meet Allen the Alien and Invincible threw down a bit. Lucky for Invincible they became friends or Allen could have become one of Mark Grayson's most deadly foes!

I'll have to try an Angstrom Levy or maybe some Maulers this week.

Great topics this week! And some excellent work so far! I love the 40k universe - this Space Wolf Space Marine was started recently because of Lord Dubu's and CWMax's 40k draw off (seeing other folks drawing 40k junk makes me wanna do the same):

@Hades: Cooool WH40K guy!
@klortho: sweet job on the original concept or character!
@phillip_r: Cool Conquest!
And here's a Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine. There's about a bajillion websites devoted to 40K stuff, and you can easily lose several hours looking at all the cool stuff associated with it....

Sean that's an ULTRAMARINE! ;)

Actually, it's a Black Templar. They're a second founding chapter of the Imperial Fists. The Fists' gene seed has faults with the catalypsian node and betchers gland, so they cannot enter a hibernation trance, not do they produce acidic/poisonous saliva. Hence the Imperial fists quote: "We do not need to sleep or spit poison. We are the Fists! We crush our enemies!"
The Ultramarines have perfect geneseed. Which is why I don't like them.

scmarooney: Thanks! And that's an excellent Hero meerkat!
paladis: Thanks man!
Favorite-N: I've been a marine player since the Rogue Trader days. The two marine armies I play most often are Crimson Fists and Black Templars. I love the Sons of Dorn. The Crimson Fists are stoic and unrelenting and the Black Templars are filled with zeal and rage. I quite enjoy stomping xenos scum wherever it may hide.

Nice. Did you ever make your own chapter when the 2nd? edition came out where you could build your own space marine chapter with the special rules provided? The Champion for the Templars was always a pain in the ass. "What I'm surrounded by twenty tyranids? I'm just gonna throw down a challenge and make this go one on one..."
--on topic--
I'm really liking the design work on Hero; it's funny cause the way the scorpion tip is formed it almost looks like he's using a mop to fight.

Amazingly good work this week, Guys - it's even better returning now:-) Love that Hero hydekomiksink.
Here's a Space Marine Standardbearer from me. I wish only my patience had lasted long enough as the chapter symbol really suffered the lack of it... Coming to the symbol and following the practice hadesillustartion layed out: this is my custom chapter, the Frost Angels. Dark Angels successors, planned to be even more eerie if possible, with a medieval Danish/Saxon background as I was reading Cornwell's Saxon trilogy at the time I came up with the idea.

@D.C.: love the mustache on that Viltrumite! He's probably the most popular guy on the planet formerly known as Viltrum ;)!
@Shaun: Nice job on the Hero drawing, and thanks for submitting the written concept for your character!
@hydekomiksink: Cool Hero drawing!
@Einar: Cool Space Marine standard-bearer! Seems very Roman Legion with the banners! Are the Space Marines based on the Roman Legions of history?
@wender1: Nice Anissa drawing!
GREAT job to everyone who contributed to Weekly Sketch Group #222! You all continue to make the Weekly Sketch Group the most creative area of PencilJack week in and week out! Hope to see you ALL over at WSG #223 which I am going to post up in the next few minutes!

Thanx, Sean. In my view the 40k world is a feudal medieval world dressed in sci-fi garb. Since the guys creating the world were pushing for a real grim Imperium, vast and proud (and cruel) they applied Roman elements among others to elevate it a bit.
The Adaptus Astartes (the Space Marines) stand as monastic knightly orders, being highly individual, but always heeding the call of the High Lords of Terra. Each of the chapters has its own heritage, background and accompanying style and iconography, which in the case of the mentioned Ultramarines happens to be the Imperial Roman style.
As banners are considered Warhammer is all about banners. And skulls, no matter which army you choose. You can tell the difference between the (let's say) good guys and the bad ones by the number of skulls they have on their armour - the good guys have only half as many as the bad guys:-)
