Weekly Sketch Group #221

Welcome to another amazing installment of the Weekly Sketch Group here on PencilJack! Manji left me the keys to this fast car a few months back and I've been driving it like I stole it until he comes back for it ;)! Everyone is welcome to join the sketch group, just pick one of the topics below, sketch it, scan it and post it here :)! Don't be shy, it's not about producing the next Rembrandt here, it's more about putting pencil and pen (and stylus) to a drawing support of your choice and sketching one of the weekly topics! It keeps the rust knocked off and gets you back in the swing of drawing on a regular basis! If you have any ideas for subjects for future sketch groups send me a PM and I'll do my best to include them the following week!

Now, with all that said, here are this week's Tempestuous Topics:

1. The Deadliest Villains of the Fantastic Four! (Doctor Doom, Annihilus, Blastaar, Galactus, Terrax, The Frightful Four, The Mole Man, Ego the Living Planet, Diablo, etc, etc, etc.)

2. Bugs versus Predator: Bugs Bunny took a wrong turn at Albuquerque and is now being hunted by the Predator.

3. Original Concept or Character:

MANDE-1 is a character from an epic sci-fi/adventure story dealing with genetic engineering.

In the distant future mankind has accepted genetic alterations and modifications as the norm. Those humans with a healthy enough genetic makeup to undergo the operations were accepted into the Newmans openly. The Newmans believed maintaining their human features was a rule that could not be broken while implementing genetic enhancements.

MANDE-1 is a Newman, who is perpetually to look 23 and beautiful by Newman standards. Those standards are slender neck, very thin mouth, small nose, large eyes and slightly larger brain size which forces her head to look like an egg.

Mande-1 is a member of the Architects who are Newmans that perform medical procedures on other Newmans and assist Humans with genetic modification if they pass screening tests. She wears her Mech-Armor that is composed of a large chest plate that acts as storage for all serums she may require and one large mech-arm that carries all her implementation and medical tools; needles, scalpels etc. Her left arm is free but wearing a sterilization glove that goes up to her elbow that not only absorbs illnesses from direct contact but also secretes basic antibiotics and stimulus.

Mande-1 is a kind soul who has focused her pursuits more in assisting Humans with surviving the grim life outside of the Beacon Cities who do not fit the required genetic make-up to become Newman. Mande-1's armor also houses her hovering robotic assistant that helps with surgeries and diagnostics. He is part of the chest plate as well but can be floating around like a familiar.

@yomark: Generally critiques aren't really a part of the weekly sketch group. We just draw the topics and try to keep our pencils moving in a semi-organized way :). Feel free to post any WIP's here (if they are one of the weekly topics) but if you want more help or critiques, use the Sketches and Works in Progress lab, or the Finished Work lab near the top of the main page :). Hope to see more of your work here in the future!

@Skothu23: Ego and Annihilus! I love that you figured out a way to get them both in the same image. Throw in some star patterns in the background and you're all set!

@phillip_r: That Galactus cracks me up! I can just see him chewing on the earth in the way the cartoon horse from REN & STIMPY might chew on some grass. Very funny stuff!

@scmarooney: If there was a "Most Improved Artist" award, I think you'd win it every week! A very nice Annihilus, dude, and even though I don't care for that version of Doom's costume, you did a nice job with it. Rock on!

Look at how jacked up the (viewer's) left side is versus the right. I decided when I was doing this that I was just gonna leave stuff (unless there was a major slip up), so that I could see what kind of lines I'm really throwing these days.

I LOVE that style of drawing. I consider that part of the "Alex Toth" school, which Loston is definitely a part of, as well as too many artists to name. Nice, clean and classic. I could learn a thing or five from you. Nice Doom too, btw.

I really like this: reminds me of anime, but that's probably the large eyes, which is spec.

@scmarooney:
I wasn't sure about the WIP thing, but I did post the same thing in Sketches.
I like your Doom, and somehow, it looks closer to the Comic-version than the movie did, and I prefer the comic version, So it seems you achieved a nice fusion.

See, now: Arnold S. spent all that time setting up those elaborate traps, and all he needed was a rake………go figure. Maybe carrots a brain-food.
BTW: do you have a scanner? This has the look of a mobile upload. I'm probably not telling you anything you don't know, but if you just hit "Auto-Levels" in Photoshop, you'd get a more balanced exposure on the image. This is looking quite grey and dark on my screen.

@Yomar: When I finish my sketch, I take a pic with the iPod then post it right from my working place, so I don't have time to make it look better. Later, when I get home, I work on it a bit more, scan it properly and update the post.

@dave_clarke: Hey, Dave! Glad to see you picking up a pencil, man! Don't worry about the inking not going the way you want. It's much harder to get back in the swing of inking by hand than it is pencilling by hand. Inking by hand will come back to you, but it'll take a little more practice and patience. Do yourself a big favor though: when you're inking building and mechanical things, don't be afraid to use a straight edge to make sure the edges of buildings look straight and your windows look even. On man-made/mechanical objects like buildings, using templates, french curves, straight edges and so forth will up your game, and they will help make your inks look much nicer in the finish. :)

@Ditch: Thanks, man! I like the tooned up eyes you gave the Predator. One suggestion I might give you about how to turn Predator into more of a tooned-up character is in regards to exaggerating his proportions. Imagine him with more of a Tasmanian Devil physique, for instance--big head, wide shoulders and arms, but with a tiny waistline and little tiny legs. lol. Good job though, regardless. Bugs looks to be in some real trouble!
