Howdy fellow Sketch-Groupers! It's another new week and that means (drum roll please....) : It's time for a brand new Weekly Sketch Group! Manji the Magic Moderator hasn't returned from his adventures hither and yon to reclaim his Sketch Group, so I will continue to be your Fill-In Moderator in his absence. As always, if you have any killer ideas for topics for NEXT weeks sketch group, feel free to drop me a PM and I will do my best to include it!

And now on to this week's Terrific Topics:

1. Any Character from the DEATH NOTE manga series.
2. Foghorn Leghorn, Ninja Assasin.
3. Witchblade
4. Highlander: There can be only ONE! (draw any Highlander Character, or make yourself into a Highlander Character!)

Had to try and get in early this week as I don't want to face down another long day of not being able to post right at the deadline. Went with the Kurgan from Highlander. Clancy Brown was a spectacular villain in that flick. I always thought his performance really helped make all the other aspects of that film more believable as he took his character way out there on the outskirts of crazyland. So good.

I started this sucker off with pencils and didn't like what I had so I tossed a layer of brush ink on top and like this result much better than what I had.

Much respect for the crazy ninja chickens! Keep it up guys this week looks great so far!

I'm guessing I'm the only one whos going to take up my Deathnote suggestion. :P
The challenge I wanted to set for myself was to try and draw and anime character in the style of Frank Quietly/Geoff Darrow. It took me a couple of attempts to find a way to do the face without it coming off as insanely creepy and one of those sketchs looked exactly like Edward Scissorhand :O.

The second biggest challenge I ran into was trying to find a way to make the heavy blacks that I like to use work with the extra noodling details. I had some attempts but in the end it just looked better without them. Looking over We3 and All-Star Superman again it seems Frank hardly every uses solid black for anything which is kind of amazing cos he is still able to have a atmosphere and physicality to his scenes without relying on crazy lighting which I've used in some of my work :P

In my mind I'm seeing bit of a dichotomy between a Frank Quietly/Geoff Darrow/Moebius kind of style and a Edwardo Risso/Cameron Stewart/Mike Mignola, where you can either use crazy detail or crazy blacks but not both together. Is this just me, can anyone recommend an artist that fits in both camps?

I opted to draw Zerhogie from Deathnote. It was just going to be a simple sketch, but then I busted out the pens and it just grew from there.
